You're really assuming a lot there. First of all, clearly Stevie *doesn't* have an ego thing about first singles being solely written by her: "Stop Dragging My Heart Around", "Talk To Me", "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind" and "Every Day" were all written by others. Second, how do you even know she made the decision to release "Secret Love" as the first single? Maybe it was a suggestion of her producer Glen Ballard or maybe it was the record company. Maybe they feel like they have such depth with this album that a pre-album release single like "Secret Love" could stoke some fires while the second single (whatever it is) will really light everything up when the album is actually available for purchase.

My guess is going to be 45-55k with a top 5 debut. It will stay top 20 for 3 or 4 weeks then drop off. Album sales are down, but for the most part, they're down for everyone. I believe TISL's chartings were similar.
What's different this time around, is pop is not the power house it used to be. It's all throw away music. Also, itunes wasn't around 10 years ago, so people will only tend to buy those artists' individual tracks on itunes. A lot more people are turning to music that sounds different. And while Stevie's music hasn't changed, it may sound fresh to people that are sick of songs featuring pitbull. These are the [B]albums[B] that I think actually sell (Adele?) And I've heard more negative comments about gaga's new stuff than positive... So while I made a conservative estimate, what will happen to Stevie in today's music landscape is anyone's guess.

I think that has more to do with popularity backlash than any real reflection of the music.

That's what I think too. I'm sure Born This Way will be amazing. But backlash is backlash none-the-less and will hurt her sales.

Hits Daily Double has there sales projections based on one days sales. Looks like Stevie will debut somewhere in the Top 10 with a projected 40-45K in first week sales. Seems on the low side to me, and HDD usually is far from accurate this early on.
http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/....cgi?news08519 "This Adele album is a mother. The XL/Columbia U.K. pop diva is rolling sevens with 21, which will spend its seventh week at #1 next week, adding what appears to be another 120-150k to its 1.4 million U.S. total, thanks to Mom’s Day Weekend. That’s based on one-day sales reports from those music retailers who have stopped searching for Osama bin Laden. Next week, the real battle will be for #2 between a pair of Capitol/EMI entries. The Beastie Boys’ long-awaited Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, the sequel to an album that never officially came out, looks to be in the 100-110k range, the same as the next volume of the Now 38 series on the same label. Indie stalwart Sub Pop’s indie answer to Crosby, Stills and Nash, Fleet Foxes’ Helplessness is looking at an impressive first-week total of 80-90k, which should be good for Top 4. American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez’s Island/IDJ bow, Love?, looks to be in the 60-65k range, which might be helped by her performance on Thursday night’s edition of the show. Reprise’s Fleetwood Mac vet Stevie Nicks, currently on tour with Rod Stewart, comes out with In Your Dreams, her first solo album since 2001’s Trouble in Shangri-La, which should do between 40-45k. Atlantic R&B crooner Musiq Soulchild is back with his sixth studio album, MusiqInTheMagiq, in the range of 30-35k Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx band, Sixx: A.M., is back with the Eleven Seven album, This Is Gonna Hurt, on target for between 25-30k, the same as Epic’s Sade The Ultimate Collection. The market was down 17% vs. last week, down 2% vs. the same week last year and still, surprisingly, down 2% year to date. Now we can all go back to getting to the roots of Donald Trump’s hair." |

that's not good at all, how is JLo beating Stevie at this point. She is doing bad on amazon and pretty bad on itunes until last night. Doesn't make any sense to me. I would not think Adele would be #1 either. Beastie Boys should be knocking her off. Huh?

It is hard to say what this all means or how accurate HDD ultimately is. I have followed them before for other artists I love (Carrie Underwood) and the numbers can vastly fluctuate as the week goes on. Typically, however, they are in the ballpark. They will issue another "guess" on Friday, and then a final "guess" next Monday, as I recall. Of note, HDD didn't even mention Stevie in the "forthcoming albums" component of their analysis last week, so they may just not be following her at all. I am also not sure where they get the one day sales figures from. All in all, take it with a grain of salt (or "draw a line in the sand, just because"). I wanted to pass it along because I know people have been speculating.
My only concern -- if Stevie needs a "rocket" to get her to actually do a full-scale solo tour again (read: no casinos), she is going to need to sell more copies of IYD. I wonder how much it hurts for her to not be on The Today Show, etc. this week... ![]() |

Top 10 & 40-45k is what I've projected for months. I was thinking with all of this positive press that Stevie would do better. At this rate, she'll fall right off the chart within a week or two

Her floor stock was completely gone today at Barnes and Noble. They had to come refill for us. The guy said they sold out of the first round of them. So, I dunno. It seems to be doing better than what is projected here.
