well I used to live in NYC, and I always flew into newark and took the train to grand central. 10 dollars back in the day about 4-5 years ago.

I'm not sure that's going to happen but it's a lot more likely if someone else wants to go to the Today Show and wants to split the hotel room with me. I'm also not opposed to crashing on any couches But seriously, if any New Yorkers have a free couch for the 2nd and 3rd, I'll stay completely out of your hair and go get a hotel for the 4th.

If anyone's interested in a hotel room share, PM me!
when will you get the album??!!

Honeychild, I know from NYC airports!

A taxi from JFK or LaGuardia to the city is not a flat fee (it's only a flat fee outbound)- approximately $40 - $45 plus tolls (depending on your approach into the city). So it's probably north of $55 when all is said and done.

Alternatives:

LaGuardia: Catch an MTA Bus right from the terminal! I believe it's the M125 or something like that. Anyway, if you don't have too much luggage and you don't mind schlepping your stuff around, it can't be beat for $2.25. The bus takes you to 125th St. in Harlem, which is connected to every subway line in the city. Depending on the location of your hotel (west or east side), get off at 125th St. accordingly. If you have a MetroCard, you get a free transfer into the subway system. But if you don't have a MetroCard, you'll have to pay another $2.25.

JFK: The cheap way into town is to take the AirTrain to a subway connection - either Howard Beach in Brooklyn or Jamaica, Queens. Either way, it's a loooooooooong-ass trip into the city- at least 90 minutes, probably more. The AirTrain is $5 and the subway is $2.25.

Newark: This is tricky. It's not for the faint of heart. But if you are vigilant, it's possible. Once you have left baggage claim, look out for an Air Shuttle bus that takes you directly to Newark Penn Station (not New York Penn Station- confused yet?). Cost is $6. Alternatively, you can take a local NJ Transit commuter bus that also takes you to Newark Penn Station, but hits all the local stops in "lovely" downtown Newark. Cost for that is about $2. Once you're at Newark Penn Station, catch a NJ Transit train that takes you to New York Penn Station. Cost is about $10. Alternatively, if your hotel is downtown, you can catch the PATH train that takes you either to Lower Manhattan (Financial District) or to the west side (from the West Village up to Herald Square- next to the big-ass Macy's). Cost is $2.00.

I have used all of the above routes!

There is no direct train connection to Grand Central from Newark! You would have to take NJ Transit to New York Penn Station and then the S train (subway) between New York Penn Station and Grand Central.

the train trip isn't that bad. Of course, I live on the A train in Brooklyn. Usually takes me about 20 minutes to get to the airport by A Train (door to Airtrain). Then, from my house to the times square is about another 30 minutes by A Train (door to AMC 25). sooo.... it's more like 45 minutes from the airport to the city.

But it's at least another 25 minutes on the Airtrain and the terminal connector. Plus you have to wait around for these connections. If you're traveling at night or on weekends, yeesh! Those trains run so infrequently. I'm on the west side of Manhattan, to make matters worse.

I sound like a total douche, but I don't really know Brooklyn at all. I just pretend it doesn't exist.

Thank you both so much!!!!!! Right now it's looking like Chicago to LGA is the best option. I'm definitely not taking a taxi if it costs that much. Yes I always have a crapload of luggage. But am totally used to schlepping it around with no help. Plus more than likely my mom will be with me and she packs light, so she can help me this time.

LGA is my favorite airport. It's the closest. It's the smallest. It's the least frenetic. JFK is an absolute disaster!

I am not a New Yorker, but I found a very nice way from LGA to Manhattan that costs only $10-12 on a coach bus. At ground transportation in LGA look for the NYAS bus. There is one main terminal that is their home base, but it cycles through each one doing pick ups. The airport people are helpful for finding them, and the NYAS guys wear blue jackets and have little hand held ticket printers with them. Pay them cash, they print you a ticket and hop on the bus. The first stop in Manhattan is Grand Central. They say it goes onto Penn Station, but I have always gotten off at Grand Central because the driver is usually shouting something unintelligible about the transfer to Penn Station and I didn't want to risk it. I suppose if you asked the ticket seller what to do to get to Penn Station that would work. Then from Grand Central hop a cab or the subway!

It's very easy, even my directionally challenged brother could follow the same directions and managed to end up where he was going!

www.nyairportservice.com/ Don't buy a ticket ahead of time online - I've heard they will "lose it" or say "the system is down" and you'll be stuck. There is plenty of room on the buses and they run all day.

-Also, don't be afraid of luggage on the subway. I refused to use the subway with luggage at first, because I was afraid I'd be hissed at. I would just avoid it during rush hours and use a little hustle when going up the stairs and don't be afraid to bust through the handicapped gates to exit, the alarm goes off but every other person does this anyway an no cares!

I've only flown LGA once. It's so hard to get to and from and they lost my luggage. I"ve flown JFK bazillions of times and never lost my luggage. And super easy to get to via A Train. :P

I plan on going however at this point I do not have a ticket. I am coming in on Tuesday so if anyone wants to meet up or something I'm down. On a happier note I am going to see Lindsey in CA.
