Default Philadelphia, 4/5. *Important note*

This is my next show. Who's going? Oh and the important note part is that The Phillies are playing a baseball game at the same time as the concert so everyone please plan accordingly with regards to the traffic.

I found the Wells Fargo Thread!

I originally posted this in the wrong thread, sorry Borgata people!

It's not raining now where I am, so it may not be raining in Philly. Crossing fingers that it quit. It'll be watching the Phillies on TV & DWTS results show.

Oh, have fun, David!

This is the show that I'd be going to if I were going. The DJ on http://www.wzxl.com just talked about the show. Stevie goes on @ 7:30 p.m. & I saw someone mention this before, my Phillies, are playing there @ Citizen's Bank Park, too, so parking & traffic will be dicey. The weather is just dreary (Phillies may get cancelled due to all the rain.). I think Stevie should open with Outside The Rain, like she did the last time that I saw her in Philly. (And yeah, it was raining then, too.) Everyone have fun, be safe & of course, I expect a full report after the show!

Apparently they sang Leather and Lace instead of Passion, and Rod forgot the lyrics

April 6, 2011 Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks take on age differently at Philadelphia show

Concert Review, Music, Music News, Wachovia Center
Posted by John J. Moser at 09:19:49 AM on April 6, 2011

If there’s one thing Tuesday’s concert by Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center proved, it’s that time, indeed, marches on.

But the way each marched made all the difference.

With Stewart now 66 and Nicks turning 63 next month, the two raspy voices that produced an astounding 65 Top 40 hits from 1971-91 are now both significantly diminished – constricted in range and depth.

Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks in Philadelphia on Tuesday

But while Nicks’ marched has turned into a slower, lighter and – dare I say it, matronly -- step to adjust for the limitations of voice and age, Stewart barreled forward with a damn-the-torpedoes attitude that made his set far more enjoyable, faults and all.

And on at least one song, “Have I Told You Lately,” he outperformed the recorded version, rasping fearlessly for some of his best singing of the night.

Stewart opened his 95-minute, 18-song set (plus one song by his backup singers) with the O’Jays’ “Love Train,” which he covered on his 2009 disc “Soulbook,” kicking his legs, high stepping and hiking his pants to cheers from the near-sellout crowd – which also was dancing.

After that, he launched into a litany of hits. And while his voice occasionally was faulty – on “We’re Having a Party,” it was limited and, at times, barely audible – he also frequently compensated with effort, emphasis and emotion, such as on “The First Cut is the Deepest.”

And in a lower register, seated on a white stool, he nicely nailed “Downtown Train,” which he noted was written by Tom Waits, who was just inducted into the Hall of Fame.

But Stewart often let the audience fill in around him, and they were happy to do it, singing loudly on “Some Guys Have All the Luck,” “You’re in My Heart” and “Tonight’s The Night,” as he held his hand to his heart.

But Stewart’s set was more about the show, an on that note he delivered spectacularly. He sweated through three suits – the opening yellow, blue and closing red, each dapper – giving him three chances to suavely loosen his tie and shed his jacket.

He twirled his mic stand on “Forever Young,” which he dedicated to his new son. He dedicated a very nice (made better by stellar background singers) “Rhythm of My Heart” to servicemen and women. And he danced constantly – moving amazingly for his age, shaking his rear to the crowd’s delight and even spanking himself on “Sweet Little Rock and Roller.”

He even drank a glass of wine before a fun “Twisting the Night Away,” on which, by the way, the crowd did exactly that, aided by Stewart’s hot nine-member band. So loose was his performance that on “Reason to Believe,” when he realized he sang over his violinist’s solo, he stopped mid-song to do it over.

And the crowd cheered even that. “There’s an air of excitement in the room this evening!” he said.

He closed by kicking more than two dozen soccer balls to the crowd (one into the balcony) on “Hot Legs,” then a raucous “Maggie May,” with the crowd again singing loudly. So good was Stewart that he even made the horrid disco of “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” listenable as an encore.

Nicks, on the other hand, was far more restrained on her 11-song, 75-minute set.

She, too, danced, but far slower and more deliberate – spinning, lifting the sides of her frilly black dress or spreading her white shawl, dancing in front of her guitarist or with her back to audience with her arms outstretched, still invoking the witchy personae of her heyday.

She opened with “Stand Back,” here voice thinner and sometimes lost in the cavernous arena. She sometimes let her two background singers fill in around her, but still sounded less engaged on “If Anyone Falls.”

She was better on Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” leaning back to sing the line “Thunder only happens when it’s raining,” and bent forward into the mic for a long note on “Gold Dust Woman.” She did a nice “Rhiannon” without background singers and backed only by piano until the full band kicked in.

And she sang quietly on “Landslide,” backed by just a guitar, in front of a montage of pictures of her life – a practice she said she had stopped, but realized that was a mistake and resumed it.

And she occasionally was let down by her seven-member band. “Edge of Seventeen” was meant to be dramatic and she sang it well, crouching for emphasis. But her band was emphatically no Fleetwood Mac.

Unlike Stewart’s set, Nicks sprinkled hers with lesser-known cuts –the upbeat rock of “Sorcerer” from her first solo disc and 2001’s “Fall From Grace,” on which she cut loose with her voice, singing emphatically for the first time in the night.

In fact, she sang best on those songs, and new ones. Her new single “Secret Love” was stronger and filled with feelings, and her encore, “Love Is,” with her accompanied by just keyboard, was by far the best of her set – rich, strong and full of effort.

But Nicks’s best came on her duets with Stewart. The two combined for his “Young Turks,” both of their voices showing wear, then attempted Nicks’s “Leather and Lace,” which Stewart said they had not rehearsed.

It showed, as, reading from a prompter, Stewart sang well , but so screwed up the words and lost his place that he wisely stepped aside to let Nicks finish.

She nailed it – finding the voice that touched so many hearts – while Stewart did what he did best: danced.

“I am stronger than you know,” Nicks sang to a cheering crowd. And they believed her.

Current Comments
I attended last night's concert and have to say Mr. Moser's comments are very fair and pretty much "spot on".

It seems that this review is seriously one sided and just flat out doesn't like Ms. Nicks. Typical reviewer every time she tours about how she's boring and is slow. You can't blame her for being 63 years old that she may not be what she used to be...but she still knows how to put on a show.

And I can especially tell this review is pessimistic towards Stevie because the reviewer did not get his facts straight. Sorcerer is not off her "first solo disc." Her first solo disc was Bella Donna in 1981. Sorcerer was on Trouble in Shangri-la in 2001.

I find it hard to find Rod Stewart's set enjoyable you can hardly hear him when he sings half the time...I think his band plays on top of them.

But...to each his own...and this is just my $0.02

I loved the show. I think Philadelphia audiences (even if foreigners like me are among the crowd) are the greatest. They just love their music and really push the players by their response and enthusiasm.

Rod Stewart was a big surprise to me. I really didn't think I'd like his set at all and it was great.

It's interesting that the review mentioned Fall From Grace. That was the fiestiest performance of FFG I've seen yet. REALLY good. And Secret Love was great. So was Leather and Lace and I don't even particularly like that song. I hope she would read part of the review and hear praise for her "new" stuff. Or less played stuff. Any encouragement is good. Now, if someone could only encourage her out of the black clothes and into something in a nice shade of red...

I had a blast and I'm glad I went, in spite of the moaning and groaning I did a couple of weeks ago.
