Rock legends join at the ACC By JANE STEVENSON, Toronto Sun RATING: **** (4 outta five) Rod Stewart/Stevie Nicks Air Canada Centre Saturday night Two raspy-voiced, blond-haired rock legends for the price of one. Not bad for an evening of music at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday night as Fleetwood Mac vixen Stevie Nicks - still looking and sounding great at 62-years-old - co-headlined with rockin’ Rod Stewart, now 66, who was also in good voice and great flaxen hair. Stewart, ever the British gentlemen, popped out on stage early to introduce Nicks, who he called “one of the greatest rock voices of the era and the 21st century.” Nicks’ 80-minute set was composed of solo, Fleetwood Mac and Buckingham-Nicks hits plus Secret Love, the first single from her new solo album, In Your Dreams, due May 3. “Welcome Toronto - I’m so glad you’re here,” said Nicks, backed by a nine-piece band. “We don’t get to come up to Canada that often. It’s so exciting to be up here in this beautiful city.” Nicks, in a sequined, corsetted and ruffled black dress, and wedge-heeled black boots - a downgrade from her signature black suede platforms of the ‘70s - could also still move, if more gingerly, as she performed a signature twirl just minutes into her set opener, Stand Back. And with her interpretive dance moves, long hair, and numerous accessory changes in a little black tent at the back of the stage that saw her work her way through two gold shawls - including one for set highlight, Gold Dust Woman - she conjured up her image from Fleedwood Mac’s heyday, especially when she hovered around guitarist Waddy Wachtel with her arms outstretched. Other set standouts included Fleetwood Mac’s classics Dreams and Rhiannon - which included a video of unicorns and produced the first crowd clap along of the night - the poignant Landslide, which featured pictures of Nicks family including her late father, and Edge of Seventeen with a loving, long walk around the stage by Stevie, waving to her fans and paying tribute to her musicians. Stewart, meanwhile, transformed Nicks stripped-down stage into an impressive gleaming white production reminiscent of ‘60s British music variety show, Ready Steady Go!, with 13 musicians joining him, including three horn players (two women in heels), for his set opener, a cover of The O’ Jays’ Love Train. “Good evening my friends, what a night!” said Stewart dressed in a gold blazer, white shirt, black tie and black dress pants, a shiny black patent shoes. He then delivered his own, Tonight’s The Night (Gonna Be Alright), prompting a major crowd singalong, before returning to another cover with Sam Cooke’s Havin’ A Party. Then it was time for two collaborations with Nicks (now in her signature black suede platform boots) with one slightly improved over the other but neither great - Passion (not so good), and Young Turks (only marginally better). How about them doing Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around, Whenever I Call You Friend, or Leather and Lace - i.e. a proper duet from Nicks’ back catalogue - instead? Stewart, who ditched the blazer and untucked his shirt pretty early in the show, also dug deeper into his five-decade long stash of well-known covers with Cat Stevens’ The First Cut is the Deepest and Bob Dylan’s Forever Young, the latter which he dedicated to his six-week old son - and eighth child - Aidan. But mainly he seemed intent on having a good time over the course of an hour and 40 minutes, dancing around the stage, and swigging red wine, as he returned to such covers as Sam Cooke’s Twistin’ The Night Away, Tom Waits’ Downtown Train - complete with a Brooklyn Bridge backdrop - Tim Hardin’s Reason To Believe, and Chuck Berry’s Sweet Little Rock And Roller. “I do love my job!” said Stewart after changing into a light blue blazer and matching tie. And when someone threw up A Celtic Football Club scarf to him on stage, he prompty threw it around his neck and belted out You’re In My Heart while footage of the club played on the video screen behind him. (His drum kit also said The Celtic Football Club.) Stewart second dedication of the night was “to all servicemen, past and present,” during Rhythm of My Heart, which prominently featured his three female back up singers. His standout outfit, however, was a purple suit and lavender shirt, which he donned for his cover of Van Morrison’s Have I Told You Lately, his own Hot Legs, the latter which saw him kick soccer balls into the crowd in his trademark move, the show-ending Maggie May and the encore number, Da Ya Think I’m Sexy? STEVIE NICKS SET LIST: Stand Back Secret Love If Anyone Falls Dreams Sorcerer Gold Dust Woman Fall From Grace Rhiannon Landslide Edge of Seventeen ENCORE: Love Is ROD STEWART SET LIST Love Train Tonight’s the Night (Gonna Be Alright) Havin’ a Party Passion (with Stevie Nicks) Young Turks (with Stevie Nicks) The First Cut is the Deepest Forever Young Some Guys Have All The Luck Twistin’ The Night Away Downtown Train Reason to Believe You’re In My Heart (The Final Acclaim) Sweet Little Rock and Roller Rhythm of My Heart Knock On Wood (by his backup singers) Have I Told You Lately Hot Legs Maggie May ENCORE: Da Ya Think I’m Sexy? http://www.torontosun.com/entertainm.../17856016.html |

Larry / April 3, 2011 at 8:26 PM It appeared that the lighting and sound was sabatoged for Stevie Nicks. Up in the nosebleed seats she was mostly incoherent, the drum tom-toms and base drum resonated the whole sound arena and the screen displayed her shadow, in the dark most of the time. This is very common for the "B" band to have done to them so the "A" band looks better...he did.
I figured the arena sound just sucked until Rod Stewart came on and then I realized it was done onpurpose or a group of people running the boards were complete idiots. Rod Stewart entertained excellently, relaxed and a plesure to watch adn listen to. The background screen displayed an image behind the speaker systems thatdisplayed only his legs most of the time. Two images with the screen saver between them would have been more palatable to more of the crowd. The sound was excellent for the size of the building and suffered very little drum "booming" to muddle the sound. Very good concert. My crowd left thinking Stevie Nicks sucked and would never seek her again. Very unfortunate, Stewart was a desirable repeat see, for sure and music may be sought for home playing. I am a fan of both and understanding how some of the concert politics work...she got screwed. http://www.blogto.com/music/2011/04/...ul_to_toronto/ |

Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks give heart, soul to Toronto
Posted by Bill Bedford / April 3, 2011 Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks "Heart and Soul" tour at the ACC in Toronto is an intimidating prospect for a long time arena-phobe such as myself. Stepping into this cavernous cathedral of corporate dreams, I was unsure if the queasy feeling in my stomach was vertigo or guilt for parting with $14 for a pint of beer. My unease was short lived, however, as the two seasoned septuagenarians provided some resoundingly entertaining performances, and made me forget about my hang ups. Stevie was up first, and while she attempted to bury some lovely tunes in 80s bombast and leather panted guitar shredding, she never quite succeeded. "Dreams" is a classic that still resonates through ages, as glossy as a coke-mirror but full of dead-eyed soul. The crowd were still warming up for much of her set, but the closing double-whammy of "Landslide" and "Edge of Seventeen" got people in the mood. "Landslide"- set against a montage of family photos marking the bittersweet passage of time- had even the middle aged ball cap wearing dudes in the crowd sniffling. It was refreshing in the age of American Idol showboating to hear Nicks' plain, husky tones deliver her songs simply and effectively. Rod Stewart took to the stage as the heart to Stevie Nicks' soul. While Nicks carries a haunted air, Rod is simply happy to be here, exhibiting an energy level to match his still-excellent voice. Stepping up the production values a notch with an illuminated stage, dapper musicians, and sexy singing girls this was a Vegas-worthy big show and Rod didn't waste any time getting the party started with the O'Jays granny-rousing anthem "Love Train". Soon after, Nicks returned to the stage for a few well received duets. Letting his whole ensemble demonstrate their considerable chops throughout the performance, Rod played all the cards at his disposal: nostalgic rock and roll, yacht-oriented disco and Celtic stadium anthems. He never passed up a chance to demonstrate his love of soccer, dedicating a track to Glasgow Celtic F.C. and booting balls high into the stands. Stewart saved the biggest kicks until last though, rounding off the set with the classic "Maggie May" before coming back for an encore with "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy". From the rapturous reaction in the A.C.C. it was not just the retirees in the audience that would answer in the affirmative. It was this transgenerational aspect that gave the night its undeniable appeal. Like embarrassing but beloved old aunties and uncles, Steward and Nicks brought together their whole Southern Ontarian family for one night only. The Air Canada Centre was the only place big enough to house all the love. http://www.blogto.com/music/2011/04/...ul_to_toronto/ |

Nah...she's sticking to the actual lyrics. Although, I would love to hear what sort of ad-libs she would throw in there. Since Rod doesn't think anyone knows the song he'd probably never notice!

Had a good time at the Heart and Soul Tour. First of all, thanks to, I believe, MacMan for encouraging me to keep trying to get good tics as I ended up (after multiple attempts) getting 10th row in the best seating area right by the stage. Great view and I could also see a little of backstage but no juice to report there
![]() Stevie came on right at 7:30pm. I dont think alot of people knew that it was Rod introducing her as he came out very casual, no colourful suit yet. It was nice to see 80% of the crowd in their seats for the start of the show with 10 % more in their seats half way through Stevie's opener of Stand Back. Stand Back was ok to me...my friend who went with me, a casual fan, said with a smile , she still can sing but she doesn't move around as quick which with Stevie's little step dancing could be seen as cautiously moving about to a causual fan. Stevie then graciously said hello to us all and thanked us for coming which both my friend and my co-worker who also went albeit with his own crowd mentioned how genuine she seemed..I agreed. I did love hearing Secret Love...what a treat that was and it sounded great. My friends both said it was a great new song as they had not yet heard it. Best in show ! The rest of her show was good however I do agree as most on this board do, she needs to switch it up. I have heard the same songs at too many shows in a row now and Im not talking about the work horses either. She has too deep of a catalouge of quality material to limit herself and us. Other tidbits to add: Her voice was strong...highlights being the vocals on Sorcerer..not a fave song of mine but I noticed this and so did my friend and the Edge wail..she knocked it out the park ! Best one since the Rock a Little tour for me. Gone with the Wind: Stevie had a cute giggle fit as one of her Rhiannon sleeves got caught on something on stage at the end of Rhiannon..she laughed and said "you never know which way the wind will blow". So cute. Her outfit was kinda blah to me ..too much black and right up to her neck and with those bot boots She can do better. She did look cute in her pants for the duets though. Love is: Lovely song but it did kinda drag on with many leaving for a beer break before Rod. A better encore would have left a better impression on the newbies (aka Rod's fans) My personal Stevie moment was when she came to the left side lip of the stage and waved to all of us..well of course I started to wave and jump up and down and of course Stevie looked me right in the eye and I made her night. ![]() Duets: For me, I got my money's worth hearing Passion..my favourite 80's Rod track, for mostly sentimental reasons. I really did expect to hear other songs as duets though and was surpised Rod didnt do a Stevie song at all. Rock and Roll egos. Rod: I only went to this show because of Stevie but I will admit Rod's show was great..cheesy at times though. What a change of setup between his and Stevie's stage. I mentioned this to my-coworker and he said well Stevie is so goth..lol. I think it's that cheap Rod kept her off his fancy stage so he could make his show more fabulous then hers. Such a Diva. Rod also still luvs to wiggle his butt though. One of his groupies in 2nd row floor was having a ball. She was doing this major head jerk and not in time to the music. I thought for sure she was gunna give herself whiplash...very bizarre. Stevie was outta there: Rod told us halfway through his show that Stevie was probably already back in NY; well there went my hope for an end of show bow with both of them. She's looking good: Both my friend and my co-worker asked me about her age...friend says she's still looking hot for almost 63. Co-worker was shocked..he thought maybe early 50's. Co-worker also said her voice was good and strong but he noticed the high notes were avoided and with Rod too and he said also said he was quite surprized with Stevie..he did not think he would enjoy her as much as he did and he knew quite a few of her songs..He said Landslide did it for him and what a timeless song ..nice to hear. And he also now knows her name now as before he was calling her "Nicky something". One last bit: This boy/girl couple we sat next to only came out after Dreams and she "texted" the whole time she sat there and she wasn't texting the set list either and she did not look at the stage at all. I figured they came for Rod but then they left halfway through Rod. I thought to myself after they left that she should tune in more to things as the boy was making goo goo eyes at me. Sorry Ledgies for the lengthy post especially from a major long-time lurker. Looking forward to the album in less then a month now ! Ciao bellas !

Toronto, The Globe and Mail, April 6, 2011
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...rticle1973176/ Theatre review The War of the Worlds: Sound and fury signifying a good... Music: Concert review Rod and Stevie: A nostalgic ride aboard the love train Brad Wheeler From Monday's Globe and Mail Published Wednesday, Apr. 06, 2011 11:50AM EDT Last updated Wednesday, Apr. 06, 2011 11:51AM EDT 0 comments Email Print/License Decrease text size Increase text size Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks At Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Saturday ‘Young hearts be free tonight, time is on your side.” Remember when that was the case? Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks do, and so does their audience – an ebullient crush of middle-agers at Air Canada Centre who probably remember themselves as the young Turks about whom the superstar singers sang, their eyes clouding faster with joyful tears than with cataracts. As far as time being on their side, those who believe that youth is wasted on the young would contend that the years which are spent are worth much more than any ones of promise held in the bank. A published review of an earlier stop on the Heart and Soul Tour (which played in Montreal on Friday) began with: “Can two rockers in their 60s boogie like stars half their age?” Which, of course, is an unreasonable question. Half their age? There is no such thing, not in today’s pop world. The stars who boogie are either 16 or 60, with nothing in between. And so Rod Stewart competes with no one, except perhaps an earlier version of himself. His concert, which began with a cover of the O’Jays disco choo-chooing Love Train, found the sexy sexagenarian in a nostalgic place, absolutely. He initially sported a jacket that was as brashly gold as the hits he rolled out. His hide was the deepest shade of George Hamilton, and his unnaturally blonde cockatoo hair was spikier than a railroad. (Love Train, featured on Stewart’s Soulbook covers album from 2009, was recently used for a television commercial promoting Coors Light, a beverage which commands a hefty price at ACC, a Molson house. For the price of a jumbo plastic tumbler full of suds today, a trunk-load of stubbies could have been bought in the early 1970s.) On a sleek, retro-white, double-platformed stage, the Rod who was once mod was in fine form, charismatic (but not overly chatty) and vocally up to his raspy par. “Good evening my friends,” he greeted, after an anthemic singalong about “ain’t nobody gonna stop us now” seduction. “It’s Saturday night,” he continued. “We’re going to have a good night.” What followed was Sam Cooke’s Havin’ a Party – you were expecting Another Saturday Night? – complete with a saxophone solo by a short-skirted blonde woman. Fluent in disco, soulful ballads, retro-radio fun and chummy pub pop, Stewart’s band and singers were crack. Occasional searing, silvery guitar solos, out of fashion nowadays, were presented ever earnestly. Stevie Nicks popped on stage for a so-so Studio 54 duet with Stewart on Passion, but was better with the agreeably jitter of Young Turks. Earlier the monotoned Fleetwood Mac diva had opened the show strongly, offering familiar material such as Stand Back, a reflective Landslide and a chugging Edge of Seventeen, while introducing new material from an album to come. The closing Love Is, which she introduced as the “third ballad of my life,” was done in a poignant Southern style of piano song. The 11-song set from the gold-shawl woman included the dreamy rocker Rhiannon, with its lines about a goddess (“And wouldn't you love to love her?”) resonating, you have to think, among the male half of the audience. Nicks departed from the love train, leaving Stewart to roll through recognizable terrain: Some Guys Have All the Luck, Cat Stevens’s The First Cut is the Deepest, Tom Waits’s Downtown Train, Forever Young, Chuck Berry’s Sweet Little Rock and Roller, Maggie May, You’re in My Heart (with a video salute to Stewart’s beloved Celtic United football club) and the snazzily rocking Hot Legs, which had Stewart kicking soccer balls to the arena’s upper deck. The disco-balled Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? was the lone encore, as well as an appropriate question. Long-time partners leaving the arena had something to think about: They got each other, neither one’s complaining. |

Someone Tweeted from this show that Stevie thanked Lindsey for "his help as a songwriter and partner"... anyone have any more details? I wonder what song that was before/after?
