I like to think of "Destiny Rules" as connecting with "Fall From Grace" in the sense that "Fall From Grace" features Stevie in blind rage and absolute fury with just a little touch of love (which it took a number of repeated listens to the song after hearing her describe it in Live In Chicago to kinda get), while "Destiny Rules" is taking the story from the perspective of having gotten over the anger and the hostility and looking back on the time with acceptance.

I've also described "Destiny Rules" as "Fall From Grace" on an optimistic Ritalin trip.

Apparently, the meaning for her changed again during the Unleashed Tour. Happens.
True, but the song was not actually recorded until after Robin was diagnosed with terminal leukemia, which I think is when she added the "I still see your bright eyes, I can't find you" lyric, which essentially changed the meaning of the song for her. Also, the 1980 Bella Donna demo I have of Gypsy does not have the line, "She is dancing away from you now... she was just a wish, she was just a wish" but Idk when she added that line. The song is still about going back to the gypsy that she was before Fleetwood Mac, like she said in 2009, but Robin was also there with her before Fleetwood Mac and they were both "gypsies". It doesn't surprise me that she didn't bring up Robin during 2009, because that would be a hard subject to talk about every night, but I definitely think she originally wrote it about going back to the gypsy that she was, but once she found out Robin was dying, it gave the song a new paradigm and she realized that she was the gypsy that remains, and that feeling of losing Robin completely changed the song for her. But who knows.

We've also got "What is love?" in both Frozen Love and Landslide.

In "Something Exquisite", Stevie keeps singing, "If you do not run the race then you cannot win it!"

Finally, one of the backing Stevies even sings, "Races are run!"

So, "Something Exquisite" and "Races Are Run" are linked.

"Fireflies" and "Long Distance Winner" could be linked.

I totally see your point. But, just to reiterate mine - I listened to a demo today from the Mirage sessions and she didn't use 'bright eyes' in it either. So, I think it's possible they were messing around with a lot of different endings there. As for it being hard to talk about Robin in 2009 every night - it wasn't hard for her to sing "Goodbye Baby" every night on the SYW tour?

Anyway, it's cool. I think people will forever be speculating on her lyrics. Honestly, I don't think she always puts it out there even when we think she has. Sometimes, she relates it to what was going on in her life - I think as a diversionary tactic. I could be wrong, but what a great way to handle it if you don't want to go into it. I mean, if you're sharing stuff that's so close to your heart, you don't necessarily want to talk about it - that's why you write about it, you know?

Thanks for those!

A little OT, but these remind me of FM live during "Over and Over" Stevie and Lindsey echo Christine's line "don't let me down" with "let me down again"... from "DLMDA". I know it's not a Stevie song connection, per se...

I was just listening to Night Gallery and thought of another one. What do y'all make of this:

from Change of Heart (Tom Petty) - "I've stood in your gallery/I've seen what's hanging on the walls"

from Night Gallery - "You say you stood in her gallery/...In the paintings on the wall she says there it is..." etc

I mean, what the heck is a night gallery anyway?

Honestly, I think Stevie is somewhat referring to the old 1970~73 television show, Night Gallery, which was similar to The Twilight Zone.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Gallery

Night Gallery is an American anthology series that aired on NBC from 1970 to 1973, featuring stories of horror and the macabre. Rod Serling, who had gained fame from an earlier series, The Twilight Zone, served both as the on-air host of Night Gallery and as a major contributor of scripts, although he did not have the same control of content and tone as he had had on The Twilight Zone.

Reruns might have been on late at night in Los Angeles, as Stevie was in her despair over being dumped by Joe. This next part from Wiki really sounds like what Stevie is talking about in the song:

Serling appeared in an art gallery setting and introduced the macabre tales that made up each episode by unveiling paintings (by artist Tom Wright) that depicted the stories. Night Gallery regularly presented adaptations of classic fantasy tales by authors such as H. P. Lovecraft, as well as original works, many of which were by Serling himself.

The stories of Stevie's tragic life circa 1984~85, as seen in the portraits in her gallery.

"Night Gallery"

Well, every day I search to find a new way
Some new thing to say, something to make you stay
Something that might mean something to you
Something...

Within my weariless search
Oh, there is no company
Down the road, I move by myself
Say you stood in her gallery

Night gallery
You stood in her gallery
In the night gallery
In the night gallery
What did you find
In the night gallery
An answer to me?

And the paintings on the wall, she says "There it is...
If you look hard enough"
Nothing more that I can really say to you
Nothing but the way I love you so much

Night gallery
So much...
In the night gallery
Say to me
Just tell me to go home
Night gallery
Maybe really know
Night gallery
Something in my heart
Night gallery

(I think Stevie says "in my lonely search" but I could be wrong.)

Oh, and "Change Of Heart" was way before "Night Gallery" was written, so Stevie definitely could have been inspired by those lines!

^ To an extent, couldn't Gold Dust Woman be a part of that list?

Wow, very interesting! I'd never heard of that show - before my time - but now that you point it out, there must be a connection. "Night Gallery" is such an odd phrase that there couldn't not be a connection. Interesting!

Can you imagine Stevie's Night Gallery??? What kind of bizarre images on the canvas, depicting the chaos and sadness in her life circa 1984~1986... And then the STORIES those paintings would tell!

What's the name of that one painting of Stevie's from then? No Spoken Word ~ Angel Aware...?
