I recently watched this movie, and while not a memorable piece of celluloid, I did enjoy the story. It was FILLED with nudity and graphic sex scenes. I kept thinking to myself as I watched it, "Wow. This is one of Stevie's favorite movies." LOL!

Yeah I believe I watched this years ago on cable when it came out. It had to be early 90's.

Was she inspired by the movie or the book? I've never seen the movie, but loved the book--so much so that I went on to read a biography of Jean Rhys and see After Mrs. Rochester, a play about Rhys and Bertha Mason. Definitely a dark story, and a fairly graphic one. The book wasn't as sexy as it sounds like the movie was, though...

She said in an interview last July that she was inspired by the movie AND the book.

From VC Star.com interview...

" There is a song about a novel called “Wide Sargasso Sea,” the precursor to Jane Eyre. It was a crazy movie in the ’80s that I loved. "

And I totally agree with you about Twilight vs True Blood. True Blood is atmospheric, beautifully shot, great story lines, etc. Stevie has always enjoyed very naive forms of entertainment, though. Hence her obsession with such things as Rappaccini's Daughter.
Get what you're saying, but I really don't think of Hawthorne as a naive form of entertainment. His characters may have very simplistic, black/white viewpoints but the overall stories are heavy and always linger on the dark side of human nature and the restrictions, judgments and suffering we impose on ourselves and others.

I can see how Giovanni and Beatrice's love is one dimensional, but I see them as just tools in the grander, complex plot. I find stories like that (and another favorite Young Goodman Brown) very layered and knowing.

Does anyone think that Ann Marie Calhoun's violin on Moonlight is simply awesome?
By the way, at approximately 0:40 seconds into the teaser (when Dave is on the table) Lori disappears into thin air.

True Blood is the best show on television. I was Mary Ann for Halloween a couple years ago- I wore a Grecian dress, had claws, and a bloody heart on a bloody knife. Hunter's Casserole, anyone?

yeah, it sounds nice, he used her a lot I think. Lots of strings on this album. She's also very pretty.

What also struck me is I have read the some of the books TrueBlood is based. The Sookie Stackhouse novels. I had no idea this series is based on that. I liked the books ok. They are not as deep as Anne Rices novels, but they are a nice read.
Even though True Blood is based on the Sookie Stackhouse series, they aren't even remotely the same. I've read them all.

Whatever. I've read a ton of vampire series. My vampires will always be Anne Rice's.
