Release Date - Your Rituals & Traditions!

I'm interested to know if any of you have rituals or traditions that you follow whenever Stevie releases a CD or project? Specifically, what is it that you do on the release date?

I love many artists, and there are about 9 or 10 more besides Stevie that I am fanatical about...however when they do release a project, I'll usually wait til after work, run to whatever book/music/media superstore has it for the lowest price, then go home and listen...and listen for weeks, sometimes months (Adele's "21" is currently in rotation for me).

Stevie, on the other hand, is a bit different. I will take the day off of work when she releases something. Back when Tower Records was open (I worked for them from 2002 til 2006 - BEST JOB EVER!) they would stay open on Monday nights/Tuesday morning and you could buy new releases right at Midnight! I did this for TISL, Enchanted and SYW. I will immediately forgo putting in the car CD player, and wait til I get home so I can listen at full volume on headphones. All the while, reading lyric sheets and liner notes.

Afterwards I will then get back in the car, take a long drive and play it in its entirety for the second time.

Back home for a third run through on the 5.1 stereo surround sound so I can hear it fill up the room.

Is that weird? To play it three times through, three different ways in three different locations?

Then I will start sharing it with my close friends and continue to listen throughout the week. It usually takes me about a week to determine what songs work/resonate with me and which ones don't.

Anywho, is there anyone else who has any weird traditions such as this?

I think your ritual is really cool! You are a true Stevie fan. When she has new music out or FM, I have to go and buy the CD the day it is out and can't wait to get home and play the CD, over and over again and real loud!

I pre ordered Say You Will from Amazon and then had to die inside each of the five days after its release date as I waited for the fukcer to be mailed from Pennsylvania to Arizona. Then my sister and her two sons arrived for a visit the day the CD arrived and it was so hard to concentrate on having fun with them when all I wanted to do was sit in front of my stereo, smoke a joint and listen to the music.

I think I have an exam the morning IYD comes out :-\

For SYW, I went to Walmart (*shutters*) at midnight the night before and had to ask them to open the boxes of new CDs and look for the bonus edition. Don't judge me for the Walmart...it was the only place in my small town open at midnight.

This time, I'll likely go track the CD down at Best Buy or something right after my exam, and listen to it in my living room in surround sound...nice way to unwind after a constitutional law exam.

For me it's always the same as it has been since "TimeSpace" I will be at whatever store has the album the morning it comes out. There have been a few occasions where I had to go after work, but I since TS I get the album the day of the release (prior to that, going back to "Tango" I got the album the week it was released). I will listen to the album on the ride home, but will listen again once I get home on the stereo.
This tradition hasn't changed since then. Even in the cases where I've had the album before it was released (with TISL I had the promo version almost a month before the official release) I will still go to the store and buy a copy. In the case of IYD I have it pre-ordered, but if it's not here that morning, I will head to Best Buy or Target to get a copy.
With today's albums there are often bonus tracks, so I will seek out all versions as well. I used to buy the album on LP, cassette and CD, now I end up getting it on CD or download (if there are bonus tracks). In the case of "Crystal Visions" I had pre-ordered the CD/DVD version, but went out and got the standard edition as well. I'm nutty like that!!

I used to go to Camelot or NRM on the Tuesday release dates to pick up any new music. I don't live where I used to. So now, I'll have to hope that somewhere will have it on release date. If not, I'll have to order it online and wait. Then, I have to listen to the album ALONE! I don't want to listen to it around anyone else and have their opinion color how I feel about the album. I guess I'm weird that way.

Whenever a new release comes out that I'm desperate to own, I wake up earlier so I can get to the store right away to buy it before heading to where I need to be. I'm lucky because I usually don't have to worry about other people waiting because my taste is just that wierd compared to the "norm" of people in my city lol.

I will be buying it the second it is released on iTunes and staying up all night listening to it.

I can still remember exactly what I did for every release... such fond memories! I became a fan in '93, so here's the rundown of what I did for each release! I don't guess there is really a common thread among them...



Time: I saw the band live in concert before the album was released, but wasn't swayed by that experience to immediately go buy it.

Street Angel: I remember seeing Stevie on Entertainment tonight promoting the album, but her appearance and voice steered me away from going out and buying Street Angel right away.

The Dance: I rode my bike down to my town's little media store and got it (I was 15). My Mom later went back and asked them for the posters they had in their window for me. They gave them to her, and they hung on my bedroom wall at my parent's house for nearly 10 years. I remember watching the concert the first time it came on TV (it came on TV before the album was released, IIRC), and it brought tears to my eyes haha.

Enchanted: I think I got this for my 16th birthday from my parents. We also went to see Stevie live that summer with a friend of mine.

Trouble In Shangri La: This came out my freshman year in college. I did the Warner Bros preorder thing so I could stream the clips of the songs, but the shipment was delayed until several days after the release date. Which KILLED ME. So I went to Media Play and bought a copy so I could listen to the album on the release day . I still remember driving around in my car with the sunroof open just GUSHING over the album.

Say You Will: This album came out when I was in college as well. I also went to Media Play to get it, and brought it back to my on campus apartment to listen to it with my boyfriend at the time. He ended up falling in love with Fleetwood Mac because of the album. I saw the band 3 times that tour... the Say You Will era contains some of the fondest memories of my life! I also remember Destiny Rules was leaked before the album came out, and I burned a cd of it. I don't think my Pontiac's CD player would read the CD, so I sat in my DeLorean in my parent's garage and listened to the song over and over.

In The Meantime: I got this one from Charlotte's biggest indie music store, Manifest Discs. God, I loved that place. I just fell in love with this album listening to it on the drive home. I thought it was the best thing Christine had ever done... and still kinda do! It's such an honest, refreshing album.

Under The Skin: I remember my younger brother was staying with me when this album came out because my parents were going on a road trip on their Harleys. So I had my Mother's Maxima, and got to listen to Gift Of Screws the first time through the AWESOME Bose sound system that car had. Despite that, I just never fell in love with this album. It just never has resonated with me.

Gift Of Screws: This is probably my favorite memory of buying a Mac album. My house had just flooded the previous month in a tropical storm, I'd lost my car to the flood, and most of my possessions. I was still battling with my insurance company over compensation for my car, so I had to take the light rail train to the record store. I bought the album and a portable cd player at the same time, and listened to the album on the train on the way home. It was just the coolest experience. I was watching the urban pageantry of the train and it's views of the city unfold while listening to this very progressive, rocking album for the first time. It reminded me of why I love Lindsey so much. Gift Of Screws was a bright patch in a very stressful period of my life.

Soundstage Sessions: I never bought the album, but I do have the DVD. However, the first time I saw the concert was on PBS well before it's release. I believe it coincided with my birthday party. So all of my drunken buddies were piled in my living room watching the concert with me... fun memories

I don't remember what I did for the Very Best of Fleetwood Mac or Crystal Visions. I don't think I got either right away, as I already had Fleetwood Mac's and Stevie's back catalogues. I do remember having Crystal Visions for my annual Key West road trip with my buddies in 2007, and remember everyone LOVING the Deep Dish Dreams.



So what am I going to do for In Your Dreams? More than likely I'll ride my Vespa up to Waterloo Records here in Austin and buy the album. I'll come straight home and put it on the sound system I have in the livingroom and probably light incense and drink champagne.

I can't say I have any rituals... actually, I can't even remember the last time I even bought an album on it's release date. The only other artists I listen to more than casually or song by song I suppose you could say, are Hanson and Britney Spears, and for some reason I waited to get both of their latest albums until few days after.

However, I do plan on getting IYD immediately upon it's release. I'll have school on that day, so I'll probably stay up late and get it @ midnight, listen to it once through at home, sleep on it, and listen to it again on the way to/from school the next day.

If not, will buy it from the store and take it home and listen to it.

I was going to wait until after work to listen to it, but you know what sorcerer999 ??, taking the day off is a GREAT idea. I mean this is a HUGE deal and is worthy of a day off.

I am going to first hear it through headphones while drinking wine with a lava lamp and candles going. Gotta have that "Stevie" atmosphere/vibe thing going on while listening to the music and reading and looking through the CD booklet.

Then, I will blast it in the living room in surround sound stereo system!!
