Ok, totally wild thought I know, but do you suppose that Stevie's "Secret Love" is in fact cocaine? The time frame is right for when she would have started using. At that point it would have still been a brand new thing and at the same time would have been an "oh maybe I shouldn't be doing this" kind of thing.
Go thru the lyrics and it sort of makes sense. Ever since she's been talking about the song and how she says she has no idea who it's about, I've been thinking "maybe it's not about SOMEONE, but someTHING". I know most of you will totally dismiss the idea, but who knows??? |

Ooh, that's a really clever theory, and I like it. Some parts of the song do sound like it could be related to Stevie's relationship with Cocaine, but, she talks to someone during the song, so it can't all be about coke.
Maybe it's like Gold Dust Woman, a mixture of both. This is Stevie, afterall. ![]()

Um I don't think Stevie's love affair with cocaine was ever a secret. Just sayin...

I just think this is a bit of a stretch :/ the only line that I can even kind of warp to be about cocaine would be "you need some rest, my darling it's best"... but even still, I feel like that's really stretching it. IMO it's very obviously about a person.

That loose "logic" could be applied to any song or... anything! Starting with Stevie herself, she perpetuates myths and meanings and instills deep importance in some of her most flimsy songs. You know what that technique is? IMAGE MARKETING! She's a master at it! And some fans are suckers for it. Where did it start? The moment she joined Fleetwood Mac and created the whole Rhiannon thing. Once she went solo, it went into hyperdrive. Not that it's all purely calculated, but the fact is, the music business is tough, cold and calculated. You have to project a strong image -- in which she succeeded. And you have to invoke intrigue and the pretense of complexity -- which she does in spades! How? By using buzz terms like "vault" which is just a fancy word for file cabinet! No doubt that her life experiences influence some of the content of her lyrics, but they are often fragmented and non-linear, with no inherent or obvious directive. Stevie's writing ability is limited, but she knows how to maximize her strengths within those limitations. That includes sticking to the talking points that her lyrics are somehow an intricate, woven metaphor/matrix "code" of deep, intimate knowledge and private experiences. Thus, it gives some gravity to the most questionable and dodgy lyrics. I am an advertising creative director. I know her game. That doesn't mean I don't love her as I have since 1977. It just means her machinations are very apparent to me. Funny thing is, I think "Secret Love" is one of her most direct and concise songs in recent years. It's an accessible, easy-to- follow narrative. But it's completely justified for anyone theorize their own interpetation, i.e. a coded[ message about cocaine. If anything, her songs are open to numerous intepretations.

. It's certainly not something she's ever confessed to. Perhaps that's why she has such amnesia about the origins of this particular song (which I totally do NOT buy, by the way) .

Was this a love affair that she had while she was WITH Lindsey??!!

However, who knows. I seem to recall one instance that she mentioned where she went and stayed with another guy in another state, or something of the sort, before going back to Lindsey... however I remember only the skeleton of that story so that may be warped from what was actually said/happened. TBH her secret love could be any number of people. Supposedly the time-frame for the affair is 1976, right? If she won't tell us who it's about (or "doesn't remember"), then it's obviously not someone she's spoken about before...
