The last big quake... no one died... this time around there are reports that 20 people are confirmed dead, and they're still digging out people that are trapped in many of the fallen buildings.

Glad you're okay; I figured Wellington was quite far enough away. I suppose the one fortunate thing is that Christchurch is generally low-rise and rather sprawling/suburban in character; it's more like a big town than a big city. The outskirts are a little iffy, but the CBD around the cathedral is a great area... I'm so incredibly bummed by the death and devastation. The nicest people anywhere are in Christchurch.
