Default In your opinion, what's the best first line of an FM song, and why?

My pick is:
Rhiannon rings like a bell through the night and wouldn't you love to love her?

Great rhythm in this word choice, great simile.

My second choice would be:
Intense silence as she walked in the room, her black robes trailing, Sister OTM.

I get a full image from this, & it matches her look in the Mirage concert.

Third choice:
Rock on, GDW, take your silver spoon and dig your grave.

Again, great image, & I love that she begins with a command.

Talking GYOW

Probably "Lovin you, isn't the right thing to do." Go Your Own Way of course.

It's a typical answer but I think it kind of sums up what the band is about.

Thumbs up I agree..

with demon....GYOW has a terrific opening line!!

ISA - "I've been alone, all the years, so many ways to count the tears..." It prepares you for the sadness to come in the rest of the song....esp. the solo.

Oh Well - "Can't help it, bout the shape I'm in, I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin..." Well, how frickin sad is that, ZERO self-esteem.

Bare Trees - "Bare trees, grey light, oh yeah, it was a cold night.." You can see the cold, dreary night, the bare, dead trees...great imagery.

There are just tons of great opening lines...too many!! This band's history is frickin amazing with all the various singers/songwriters and their different personalities. AWESOME!

I picked the following first liners (2 Stevie- 2 Lindsey- 2 Bob Welch- 3 Christine) because they each immediately introduce/establish a strong sense of imagery.

Have mercy, baby, on a poor girl like me

Rhiannon rings like a bell through the night

Her lips were waiting, her eyes looked sad

Meet me down by the railway station

Listen to the wind on the water

So cool, calm and collected

I want to sit at home in my rocking chair

The swamp is getting deeper all the time

Don't think that your dreams are sane

Another one: (Dare I write a line from this song that so many posters hate? )

Dim and wavering on a wind-blown night

(Again, love the imagery tied to the emotions of the song)

Great picks, penguinhead -

Rhiannon rings like a bell through the night

Her lips were waiting, her eyes looked sad

Meet me down by the railway station

Listen to the wind on the water

Plus..

Listen to the wind blow ...
All it took was a special look, and I felt I knew you before..

Let's not forget...

Illume, says the candle that I burn, a reflection in the window, all the way to Point Dume.

Something in you brought out something in me that I've never seen since.

At the top for me...

Wait a minute baby, stay with me a while ... said you'd give me light, but you never told me 'bout the fire

Drowning, in the sea of love, where everyone would love to drown...

(Which other songhas two great starting lines!!!

Sara is a great choice, but it's not the only one with several great "first" lines:

Intense silence as she walked in the room
Her black robe trailing SisterOTM
And a black widow spider makes more sound than she
And black moons in those eyes of hers made more sense to me

These are favorites of mine, too, esp. Oh Well. (I love the Lindsey version.)

"Go on save yourself, leave the key here. You love someone else, I shouldn't be here"

"Until she herself, became the deadliest poison"

"Every night that goes between, I feel a little less"

"Loving you isn't the right thing to do"

"You could be my silver springs, blue green colors flashing"

"Listen to the wind blow, watch the sun rise"

There are so many. But yet, never enough, LOL! I could go on and on....
