Default Single Disc Version of Tusk

Has this been done a million times on here? I'll ask anyway. What would you pick?

Let's say it can be a 12 song album. The FM albums were never divided equally between writers, so to match the division of songs that happened on Mirage and Tango, you would have to have 5 Lindsey songs, 4 Christine songs and 3 Stevie songs. I wager many fans would probably prefer to have more Stevie and less Lindsey. But imagine that it's a tracklist that might have really happened, and not, say, one that has all of Stevie's songs and only one of Lindsey's.

For Lindsey's songs I'd definitely choose "Tusk," "Not That Funny" and "What Makes You Think You're the One," but after that I find it hard to choose between them. I guess I wouldn't use "I Know I'm Not Wrong" as it's a variation on "Not That Funny." And I don't think "The Ledge" or "That's Enough for Me'" make sense on a single album Tusk - they're too short and not very Mac-like. So I'd use "Save Me a Place" and "Walk a Thin Line." (I'll pick that over the similar "That's All for Everyone" as Mick Fleetwood liked it enough to cover it on The Visitor).

Christine's songs would have to include "Over and Over," "Think About Me," and "Brown Eyes." But what to pick for the 4th song? "Honey Hi" and "Never Forget" are pretty insubstantial so I think I'd go for "Never Make Me Cry" - it's short but beautiful.

It's really hard to pick 3 songs of Stevie's 5 because her material is so strong - probably the best set of songs she wrote on any FM record. "Sara" obviously has to be there. I personally don't care much for "Sisters of the Moon" but it's clearly a favourite so I guess it has to be there too. And for the third track I'd choose "Beautiful Child," even though it's long. I hate to see "Storms" and "Angel" go, but I'll cut "Storms" for being too low-key and "Angel" for being too rambling.

So:
Side 1
Over and Over
What Makes You Think You're the One
Think About Me
Save Me a Place
Not That Funny
Sara

Side 2
Sisters of the Moon
Brown Eyes
Walk a Thin Line
Beautiful Child
Tusk
Never Make Me Cry

This is not to say that I think Tusk SHOULD be a single album. I'm just imagining that they were forced to cut it down.

acually, I saw on Ebay once a single-album version of Tusk, it said it was released in some foreign country, Tiawan maybe? I don't remember the tracklisting, but it looked VERY official. Anybody know anything about it?

I wouldn't want to cut any of the Tusk songs. I think the album is just about perfect as it is, all 20 songs.

Hi Adam,

I actually bought the single album on eBay. It´s from Korea, has the same front cover as the original album, the back cover is the colour photo of the band where they are positioned in many strange varieties, which can be found on the original inner sleeve. It´s interesting to note that they used the second disc of the album with the addition of Sara as the first track of side one, so you get Sara then Angel! Also the title of the album reads not only "t u s k" on the front cover but positioned directly underneath it "s a r a" as well! Really strange wouldn´t you say? I´ve seen another copy at a record fair in Utrecht this April which was also from Korea but didn´t have the addition of Sara or the printing of that title under the record title. So that means that either the one I have is rare, or it is a second pressing when they chose to release Sara as a single in Korea and then were forced to add it to the single album!

I hope this clears things up a bit.

I for one feel that they shouldn´t have cut the disc, it´s my all-time favourite album ever and wouldn´t have minded at all if they had released a triple set!!

Greetz,

Marcel.
