Dinner consisted of several courses: pear salad, pear soup, pork chops and pear sauce, ending with pear pie.

My father was telling me over the weekend how he and his brothers used to play croquet on their grandparents lawn. This was in southern Illinois, so maybe it's not as hoity-toity as I believed.

We had a fruit platter this weekend, not a pear in sight!

My neighbors love it, and they're as far from hoity-toity as you get. I've played it with them and when you've had a few drinks it's actually really competitive - and fun! I can totally see Linds and his brothers back in the day, playing it - and really getting lost in it I think that's the thing with him and tennis too. Most sports and games probably draw him right in due to his competitive nature.

I used to play it in Michigan too, but we didn't think it was too much fun. It took a back seat to almost every other outdoor activity and, of course, doing it at Christmas time was not an option.
