I would think he must be almost done with Stevie with that coming up.

I'm really loving Dave more and more. If not just for his love and respect for Stevie (and Fleetwood Mac), but for speaking out about the state of the music industry. I watched about half of the AMAs, and I felt the same way he did. At first I thought that it was a generational thing -- that I couldn't relate to the artists. Then I realized that wasn't the issue -- the whole thing was just a bunch of hyped-up crap. I couldn't stand to watch anymore of this trainwreck. I was disgusted. (botox, tits and autotune)

I, for one, am starting to be worried about him taking the reins of the Mac legacy here. Odd.

I can understand what you mean. Although it may be controversial, when I think production I think Lindsey. And I am a little worried that he would take the music in a direction it should never go down. Stevie doesn't need to be an extension of Eurythmics, if the whisper of a band album is just that. And, to be honest with you, Lindsey and Dave are so headstrong musically, that I feel that could be alot of tension and stress in recording. And not in the way that makes Fleetwood Mac great.

Well, Dave/Eurythmics have their legacy; Mac have their own legacy. They are both considered legendary bands and a part of music history. I don't see either legacy being threatened at this point, but I guess you never know.

So I'd probably look at all this more positively - if something good can come out of their collaboration and they are having fun working together, that's great! If they don't mesh well and nothing (or something forgettable) comes out of it, but they still have fun, good for them. (as long as Lindsey still tours separately...)

First of all, I don't think you can take a little sample of Dave Stewart's music and then extrapolate it to everything else he has ever done. He strikes me as a journeyman producer who inhabits each new project in the guise of a new character, as opposed to just sticking to one successful formula for production. As such, his body of work needs to be considered as a whole. In hindsight, there is a lot of common ground between Dave and Lindsey (besides being intimately involved with the same famous blonde woman!): they are around the same age, they are both heavily influenced by the Beatles and Rolling Stones, they are both guitarists, they are both songwriters, they are both producers and ultimately they are both total studio nerds. But unlike Lindsey, Dave strikes me as being exceptionally open minded, charming, funny and easy to be with- a guy that anyone could get along with. He is as at-home in the studio as he is on stage or at the corner pub. By contrast, Lindsey is his own worst enemy personality-wise. He is very intense at times and seems to trip over his own circular way of speaking- probably the by-product of endless hours of therapy. He seems insular, passive aggressive and certainly would not be the life of the party. He has not quite grasped the concept that there is no "I" in the word "team." He will compromise... but only after he has done so in a way that furthers his own personal agendae while bruising everyone who stood in his way.

At the end of the day, Dave's greatest asset is his versatility and his ability to make the impossible possible, e.g., this latest Buckingham Nicks reunion. He has the gift of gab. He is not exactly a looker, but he could probably charm the pants off of every straight woman in a ten-meter radius. Dave is The Man. This is exactly what FM needs- someone who can smooth the bumps and schmooze everyone into thinking that things are going their way even when they are not. Ultimately Lindsey will be Lindsey and Stevie will be Stevie. But I think Dave has the social and musical skills and the work ethic to make it work. He is a fan. He is a peer too. I don't think he would let us down.

totally agreed with above post. Except that imo the outcome will be musically unattractive. Dave slicks. Those samples from his solo-album are totally aweful. And slickness usually makes forgettable music.

Fleetwood Mac needs a producer that sets things sharp. Like Rick Rubin. Or Jack White, or Mitchell Froom maybe.

Oh, because Tango in the Night wasn't slick at all. Oh, not in the least.

Again, I don't think you can just listen to snippets of his new album and declare that everything he will ever do will be in that vein. He's impossible to pigeonhole. Once he inhabits the persona of the project, he goes for it 110%. This time he just happened to take the guise of a Nashville country artist. Just for the hell of it. It doesn't change the fact that he produced terrific soul tracks with the likes of Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. Or the fact that he wrote/produced one of the biggest hits for Tom Petty. As a producer I don't think he is in the business of putting his personal stamp on everything. As a recording artist himself, he is sympathetic to the artist he is working with and will try to push yet respect boundaries. I don't think he is going to take an FM album and make it sound like the Eurythmics. Besides, Lindsey already did that with Tango! Yes, I went there.

I don't think Tango resembles the Eurythmics work at all. Obviously, it was the eighties and a certain pulsing dance/disco dictate governed all music at the time. Therefore, Tango can sound as dated as Sweet Dreams or Savage, but I don't think it's derivative of any of their stuff.

Personality-wise, no he's not going to hang out in pubs, but I think Lindsey has been the life of parties and that people naturally gravitate towards him. He's intense, but has also been described as friendly and caring and seems to be quite a goofball at times. He takes the dominant role in his longstanding relationships, but also seems more than a little malleable when approached correctly. I'd be happy to see what he and Dave could accomplish on a project, but I'd be thrilled to have him work with Annie Lennox too, for that matter.

Ever since Lindsey was on that radio show and Dave left a question for him, I've wondered if these two had been in contact. We knew Stevie and Dave had been in touch for "Platinum Weird," so I wondered about Dave and Lindsey. I wouldn't be surprised if they hadn't been tossing around the thought of a project together for years now, since Lindsey knew that Stevie wanted a third party to work with them.

I think it's unlikely we'll get anything new from FM or Stevie and Lindsey (together) without help from an outside spark. I'm thankful to see Dave's introduction into our turbulent, stagnant mix. I hope it turns into something and, for some of the compatible background reasons you described above, this might work out for all of the reasons that a Sheryl Crow collaboration never could.

Michele

Talking The Good Reply !!!

AMEN to a good response from our Michele!!!

What Dave said to Lindsey on the radio was very
tongue in cheek! Cheeky actually!!! It may work
since they imply that each was Stevie's lover!!!
She likes to work with her old married guy friends!

Just to clarify, if i remember correctly Dave's question was about parallels between Dave/Annie and Lindsey/Stevie relationships, and how in both cases they continued working together after relationships dissipated.

I don't think Dave Stewart's body of work should solely be judged from the sound samples from his next solo album (which I haven't heard yet), but from listening the best recorded songs he's been involved with. Here are some recommendations:

Tom Petty - Don't Come Around Here No More (producer)
Shakespears Sister - Stay (pseudonymous co-writer)
Eurythmics - The Last Time (artist and producer)
Eurythmics - I've Got A Life (artist and producer)
Jimmy Cliff & Joe Strummer - Over the Border (producer)

For Dave as a solo artist, I'd recommend songs like "Crown Of Madness", "Here We Go Again", "Heart Of Stone", "Leaving This Earth", "Even the Bad Times Were Good Times" and "This Week".

And you're into something quirky, check out his duo album with Deepak Chopra from the early 2000s titled "Grow Younger Live Longer". It's hilarious in places.

I'm very much looking forward to that Stevie Nicks album he produced (less so to his own solo album) - and I think it's great that Lindsey is guesting on it.

Well, you can rolleyes till you drop, but in all these years I have always stated that Tango was Macs WORST album ever with Lindsey in the band. Besides that, it was a productional masterpiece in slickness and experimentation in sound. Still, a contentless album with radiopop. When you listen to those Dave Stewart-snippets again you'd simply conclude that these solosongs from Stewart sound bland, slick and totally forgettable.

By the way, I have always had respect for his work in the Eurythmics. I'm talking about his most recent work. It's awful.

This. An artist's work as a producer isn't necessarily reflected in his work as a songwriter/recording artist. I'm a big fan of Butch Walker, who produces for a lot of high profile musicians, but his own music is a different animal. I wouldn't guess he was producing for Pink based on the music on his most recent solo albums, but that doesn't mean that his work in that avenue wasn't good or didn't work for the her. I'm pretty excited to hear that Lindsey is thrown into this mix.
