I've been listening to the BN shows from Birmingham and Tuscaloosa quite a bit since I downloaded them from BN.net...what great shows and the quality is remarkable considering they are from 1975. And I love the live version of IDWK.
Why do you suppose a guy comes out and says, "From Los Angeles, California The Buckingham/Nicks at the beginning of the Tuscaloosa show. Does anyone know if they played LA? I find this very strange.

After they dumped Fritz, they moved to L.A. That's where Stevie was the waitress, the cleaning lady, etc. However, I think they said that although the Buckingham Nicks album flopped, they were very popular in parts of the South, like Alabama and Florida. That's why the Farewell Tour went there for the diehard fans.

I think it's one of their band members. He's just introducing them as being from LA. In another one of those shows the guy actually says, "We're all the way from LA, California just for you people..Buckingham Nicks".

They did play in LA - with Waddy Wachtel before BN was released. From Waddy's Q&A:

"...And then we . . . had another friend. George, or Jorge, Calderon and he played bass with us. So we started playing gigs around town. The four of us. You know when I met Stevie, and I heard her sing I was already very much into Dolly Parton at that point— which was wild, because I never heard a note of country music when I lived in New York. But when I moved here, I was like, "Wow, what's this stuff? Country music? Wild." And so I gave her [Stevie] a Dolly Parton album. And I said, "you've got to learn this girl's work. You've gotta get a load of this chic!" And she couldn't believe it. And so we started gigging around town, doing Dolly Parton tunes, and other country songs, and couple of originals, and Lindsey and I would play guitar great together. So we just knocked around like that."

Yeah, the DJ's in Alabama primarily were really playing their songs and apparently from the get-go. "Long Distance Winner" was getting some airplay in other markets too - like Cleveland and Houston. But, it was really the Birmingham area that caught onto BN.

Interestingly, I just read a review from a fan who remembered that BN opened a show in Birmingham in 1973 (the year BN was released) for the band Mountain. I always been curious about any '73-'74 dates. I wish we had bootlegs of those shows - the "Southern Safari" tour.

Here's a bit of rundown from Lindsey:

“During this time, despite the hardships, we had complete faith in what we were trying to do. We had managers who were trying to get us to do Top 40 stuff. They said they could get us all the gigs we could handle if only we’d be prepared to play that kind of music- but Stevie and I knew that if we did, we’d lose whatever musical direction we had, and we didn’t want to prostitute ourselves. So we resisted that, and as a result got no gigs....nobody wanted to hear Buckingham Nicks doing their own songs.

Well....almost nobody...because we had this very strange area of localized success....a little pocket of Buckingham Nicks- mania! Of the few gigs we had done two were in Birmingham, Alabama; the first was opening for MOUNTAIN, and the second was opening for POCO...and for some reason we really caught fire in that town. Some DJ’s picked up on the album, and it was a huge success there- so we went down a storm! If nowhere else in the world, Buckingham Nicks were stars in Birmingham, Alabama..”

“It so happened that our last gigs as Buckingham Nicks was at Birmingham just after we’d joined Fleetwood Mac. As a result of our two previous gigs we were booked as the headline act, and the lineup was ; Stevie Nicks-vocals; Lindsey Buckingham-guitar, vocals; Bob Geary-drums; Gary Hodges-drums; Tom Moncrieff-bass. So we topped the bill to an audience of 7,000- and Buckingham Nicks went out on a much higher note than anyone could have expected.”

I don't remember what year "Jolene" was a hit. I can totally hear the 1973/74 Stevie belting out that song, warning some hussy to stay away from her man!

Oh, I would love to hear her do that! LOL. But, she wasn't doing it when they were playing pre-BN release.... "Jolene"came out in '74. I can't hear Stevie doing "Coat of Many Colors", but that was Dolly's big solo hit they may have picked up on. I can hear her doing "Touch Your Woman" or "Lonely Coming Down". Great songs. Lindsey and Waddy could have done some mean picking on "Joshua" too.

Ah, pre-album release! Thanks for clarifying that!

BTW, question about Stevie's Fritz days, even if in the wrong thread. WHY did they only do either covers or Javier Pacheco songs??? History has shown us that the concert promoters wanted to book the group because Stevie was in it. There's even an article stating that Polydor was initially interested in Stevie as a solo artist, not Buckingham Nicks (according to the article).

So, why did the woman not get to sing a few of her own songs in Fritz?!

Javier has already stated that songs like "Gemini" and "See The World Go By" and "I Need You" are Stevie Solo Demos, not Fritz recordings, despite people labeling them so. None of the Fritz songs are written by Stevie.

However, she did have the above songs written, as well as "Rose Garden" and many more by 1968-1970. Why didn't the band record some of those as well as seemingly everything that plopped out of Pacheco's brain?

No wonder Stevie gives those guys zero credit in her career...

Well, I think the answer to your question is simple: Javier. From what I gather, he "ruled" the band and I think as Stevie - and Lindsey - started getting more creative and more into songwriting - and probably working together on songs - the tensions started running higher between Javier and Lindsey. That's probably when Lindsey decided being a control freak wasn't such a bad idea, after all. Oh, I remember Javier saying Lindsey had "Lola" and that he (Javier) wasn't too thrilled with it. I think their styles started diverging at that point.

But, as far as the Polydor thing goes - no that's not true. I have read that Stevie had a little development deal with RCA but it was really Fritz who was on the verge of that deal and as the story goes, their real interest was in Stevie and Lindsey. Why the deal went south with RCA I don't know - except that we have the period of a few months where they had moved back to N. California due to some mysterious illness. Thankfully, Keith Olsen was still championing them because they ended up with a deal with Anthem, the label I guess he was working with a lot because Waddy Wachtel actually had a single release on that label too. It may actually have been a subsidiary of Polydor or something...those things get so complicated.

Truly, I have never found any evidence that Polydor was ever interested in Stevie as a solo artist. She and Lindsey were pitched as a duo by Keith Olsen and Stevie herself has said that she really had no desire to be without Lindsey at that time as an artist. I think they were pretty excited about the songs they had worked on together and were sure they were the latest greatest thing...

I've just recently discovered ''In the Dawn" and I love it. I know Javier wrote it but supposedly Stevie "altered" some of the lyrics so I have no idea how much of it she actually did write .

Stevie? No.

Lindsey did a song called "Deep Dense" sometime around the original GOS sessions. (the lyric "funny kind of love" is in that Lindsey song, as well)

But it's a Stevie composition, right?

Has Javier confirmed that he is the writer of "Farewell Failure"? I ask bacause I find it extremely odd that Stevie would sing a Pacheco song in 1975, so many years after she was free from his controlling ways when he wouldn't even let her sing her own compositions.

In Early 1975, after Buckingham Nicks had been out for a while and Stevie had just joined the semi-famous Fleetwood Mac, I really doubt she'd sing a song written by a man who never even let her perform her own songs 5 years before.

Anyone know for sure about "Farewell Failure"?

I'm asking Hoppy. Unless I'm mistaken he's the one who shared it via the BN site. I would think if Javier wrote it he would have posted it on his sites. Someone else may know for sure but I believe it's Stevie's song.
