DISCUSSION: Stevie's songs from Tango in the Night

I'm in the minority again, but I like all of Stevie's songs on this album. No, they aren't her best, but they aren't terrible IMO.

Seven Wonders- Best song on the album. Yes, Little Lies and Everywhere are good, but they seem somewhat generic to me. IDK why, but they do. Tango In The Night and Caroline are also really amazing songs, but I still like Seven Wonders the best. I know Stevie didn't write it, but she claims the lyrics were actually "very different" than what Sandy wrote, so kudos to Stevie!

Welcome to the Room... Sara- I love the subject matter of this song. And I like the lyrical way she wrote it. Very literal, but at the same time very confusing. Plus it has one of my favorite lines ever, "When you hang up that phone, well you cease to exist."

When I See You Again- Probably my least favorite song of hers on the album. However, she sounds so heartbroken in it, I like it. The "wassaamattababy" gets really repetitive, but alas, I still give it a listen every once in a while.

Have read much TOSOTM bashing lately, and it's fine for those who do to have that opinion. I still stand by mine, which is that TOSOTM has the largest collection of excellently written songs of any SN solo album. She outdid herself with the songwriting; there may be some issues with the production, though not on every track.
For those who have never heard 'The Other Side Of The Mirror' know that there's a handful of us who think it best represents SN as a songwriter and there's some incredible vocals on it, too. Pick it up used, even. I think it's got better songs on it than TISL did!

It is actually one of my favorite Stevie albums, if anything for Ooh My Love and Alice.

Yeah, the Other Side Of The Mirror bashing lately has been a bit surprising to me, too. In my eyes, it's the very Stevie-est of Stevie's solo albums. Yes, it's got some embarrassingly awful lyrics and cheesy adult contemporary production in spots, but I think you can say that about any of Stevie's solo albums. I personally enjoy Other Side Of The Mirror... I like the fact Stevie kinda picked a concept/theme and ran with it. I wish she'd done more concept albums, in fact.

Yes, I love the album too. The only two songs I don't care for are Two Kinds Of Love and Whole Lotta Trouble. I don't hate them but I usually skip over them. I absolutely LOVE Rooms On Fire, Ghosts & Ooh My Love. I even enjoy Fire Burning. I also really like Alice and Juliet.

What I don't understand is how come her voice is so awful on When I see you again, but her voice is wonderful on the Seven wondera and Welcome to the Room...Sara. Where the songs recorded at different times? Really listen to her voice on Seven Wonders - voice is so good!

I guess I probably like WISYA most out of the three, but it's difficult to say 'like', coz it's just so wrenching to listen to.

Also like Seven Wonders when I watch the video, but it's too much pop (and yet not quite pop enough) for me using just my ears.

WTTR...S is just a bit boring musically.

Seven Wonders is the only song on the album I really like. Although, I'm coming around to it... slowly. It hit me the other day just how good Seven Wonders is, so it's my current favourite Mac song. I'm weird like that, I fall in and out of love with songs very easily.

WTTR... S. Eh. I just don't like it. "This is a dream right / deja vu" forced lyric sounds forced.

When I See You Again... If it wasn't for that god-awful vocal, I think I'd like the song. I love the emotion behind the lyrics, and Lindsey's ending, but, I can't get past that vocal. At all.

Still, like Seven Wonders, I find myself listening to it every now and then and enjoying it. If I stop to think though, it's awful.

I think Stevie was just... really burned out on Tango, and her weak material reflects that. I was so disappointed when I first bought Tango and the other two Stevie songs, which I skipped to immediately, were so awful D:

Seven Wonders - Despite it being Sandy Stewarts song, it could easily be a Stevie song and she owns it! I love everthing about it, even if it's very 80's. Besides she looked AMAZING in the video, shame about the live performance though.

Welcome To The Room...Sara - I don't know how this became such a train wreck, the demo is promising, the lyrics are obscure but it's no "Docklands" with the laundromats and such. Stevie's vocal is a little boring but I still like this track, Joan of Arc would have been a much better choice.

When I See You Again - I like the idea behind the song, it's charming, and i find the vocal to be very emotional, kind of in the vein of some of her performances at Red Rocks. Lindsey and her should have dueted the whole song, that would have been pretty cool.

I'm a bit suprised at the lack of respect/enjoyment of these tracks by so many people.

Tango top to bottom is a much better album than Mirage, and while I would agree SN's contribution to the album was the weakest of the three writers there are some high points to these songs.

Seven Wonders---for me is the song I like the least on TITN. Not written by Stevie, this is FM trying to make a catchy Stevie tune for the album.

However, the other two contributions are quality attempts. We are all aware what Stevie was going through, and we clearly are not getting Sara/Beautiful Child etc. on this album. But she's also in a different place and luckily unlike some people is not just writing the same song album after album.

WTTRS--Lyrically seems to drift from very solid segments to very confusing segements (even on a SN scale). The fact that it's a half talk/sing type song i think adds value to it, and portrays confusion by the singer....do they really know what's going on. Plenty of build up in this song as it goes.

WISYA- Very good song....SN's vocals can drive you nuts...but to me that seems purposely done (at least to a degree). The alternate take on youtube is much smoother, making me feel as though they were trying to capture something and felt they did with her voice. Easily the best song lyrically, incredicbly deep, on par with a Storms if you ask me. And without question the LB portion of this song is the highest point on the album (outside of Little Lies). I probably have listen to the final minute of that song as many times as anything on that album......very high quality contribution. I think a lot of the mid-late 80's vibe is lost on us...even for those of us that lived through it. Some of it's understanding I think has faded away. I feel this is the best "band" centered album since Rumours, (and I believe Tusk is the best of thier albums) They went back to emphasizing eachother, even as they knew it was falling apart. Had this album been made in 80 or 81 it would've sounded completely different and we'd all be claiming it as one of the best ever.

What would you guys think about Stevie redoing When I See You Again on stage? I think if her a Lindsey just did an acoustic version on the next tour or something it could be pretty amazing! Thats something I would personally love to see.
