Hi,

I'm just wondering if the song based on the film "Wide Sargosso Sea" has that very title? If you carefully read the interview where Stevie mentions it, she doesn't actually state the title of the song, only what inspired it. I could be wrong though.

Also, has the inclusion of the New Orleans Song actually been confirmed? I think David Wild's comments regarding vampires caused some people to think it must have been recorded but there's no evidence of this to date.

For the record, I have been thrilled with Dave's input as a co-songwriter and producer from the outset and I believe he will be sympathetic to Stevie's songs in every regard. However, I am concerned about the songs they have co-written being based on the "journal poems" and wonder how much thought has gone into ensuring these lyrics actually stand up in terms of quality? I've always admired Stevie's ability to "connect the dots" and merge bits and pieces of her poetry from here and there. Sometimes this makes for a rather cryptic lyric overall but I always prefer that to her more straightforward "stories". I am nervous about getting to hear "the whole story" as she puts it.

I sincerely hope Stevie has revised "The Solider's Angel" because the original poem it seems to be based on is wretched. She may as well be stating "I am a soldier's ipod programmer" or "I go down on soldiers and take their pain away". The cringe factor is unavoidable this time I'm afraid.

I truly think this album is going to hinge on whether Stevie can a) come up with great lyrics and b) if she can hit the spot vocally. She has all the support she needs in the shape of Dave but everything will ultimately rest on her shoulders.

I have been listening a lot to the "Trouble In Shangri-La" album lately and I am astounded at how great a lot of these songs are and how they have also really held up well almost ten years down the track. I think some of it is over-produced and certain songs could have benefited from more subtle arrangements ("That Made Me Stonger" comes to mind) whilst the rougher demo versions were in some cases superior ("Candlebright" and "Sorcerer"). However, it still is a strong set of songs and I think this is because she had a number of years to write and stockpile new songs. I just fear she may have rushed into things this time around but we'll just have to wait and see.

PS I like Shanks' production on the song "Trouble In Shangri-La" despite it's rather frenetic arrangement at times, but I would love to hear a stripped-back, perhaps even orchestral version that might closer resemble the demo version. I always thought the synth refrain in the chorus of the demo was so poignant and beautiful - it would be lovely to gently tease that out with piano and strings. Whatever the case, this remains a truly magnificent song.

I think the album is going to hinge on Nicks vocals. I bet they have some really good atmospheric songs, but if she can't carry them off vocally, it won't matter.

You'd be surprised what she can do in the studio versus what she does on stage. She seems a bit more courageous (I guess since she can rerecord if she doesn't like it). The falsetto on "Sorcerer" for example, as well as "Call On Me For Magic"...and for Fleetwood Mac's SYW album, I think some of her best vocals ever were on "Running Through The Garden". And recently, her harmonies on "The One" with V. Carlton were stunning - and really the only good thing about the song.

She's got chutzpah in the studio. I'm not worried about this album at all. Especially since she, herself, is touting it as the best thing she's done since "Bella Donna".

Why would anyone on this website be surprised at what she can do? We've all heard the same things. I guess it's a matter of opinion. My opinion seems to differ quite a lot from yours about some those vocals you say were great, especially Call on Me for Magic and Running Through the Garden. Although, I think she really tried.

It has nothing to do with chutzpah in the studio. Recording songs takes a long time because you go through several recordings of the same song. Many times, you spend hours recording just a few lines from the same song. Stevie probably needed several takes to get those falsettos in "Sorcerer" just right.

And it's not exclusive to Stevie. Think about the "reeeeeaaaach me" that Bono sings in "Beautiful Day." When you're in the studio, you have several takes to get it right. On stage, he doesn't try that falsetto, or at least didn't when I remember hearing him singing "Beautiful Day" live. On stage, if you try a note and you screw up, thousands of people hear it.

Of course it has to do with chutzpah. If you're feeling it, you're feeling it. If you're not, you're not. Stevie has been quoted many times saying she doesn't like to do more than 3 or 4 takes at one time in the studio. She said that anything afterward loses it's magic, so she'll have to stop and come back to it later. Yes we've seen master reels listing such-and-such song take #12 or #13 and so on...but I bet if take #14 made it on to the record, it was because she had come back to it after awhile, and was "feeling it".

And yes, Jondalar, everything I write on this forum is just my humble opinion.

Very true, I just finished the book, "Heart In The Studio" and as most people by now know while recording "These Dreams", Nancy had a cold but she recorded the vocal anyhow. A couple weeks later they back to finish up the track, she redid the lead vocal but the gravelness from her cold was gone. The producer really liked her original vocal better, in particular the line "every second of the night I live another life..." so he edited the two vocal takes together, keeping some bits from the original and some from the retake. The end result is a seamless blend of the two.

I'll be curious to see how many songs remain on the completed album. Early released reports listed "Violet & Blue" to be on "The Wild Heart", "Smile At You" to be on "Mirage", "What Has Rock & Roll Ever Done For You" to be on "Tango" and "Don't Treat Me Like A Stranger" to be on "The Other Side..." and there have been others. None of these ended up on the albums. So a lot can happen between now and what comes out.

Apparently "Cheaper Than Free" is going to be on both her and Dave's albums...

senatorsteved
@DaveStewart. Where's cheaper than free on the double gatefold?

DaveStewart
@senatorsteved warners wouldn't allow on the gatefold as it was 4 months earlier than Stevie CD and that song is on both our CD albums

senatorsteved
@DaveStewart sure would of been nice as a promo but it must be a great song. Looking forward.

DaveStewart
@senatorsteved I agree but when she heard my version she said she wanted it on her record too and she's on warners !

Hope this doesn't mean we are losing a song off her album to fit this one in!

From the clip I heard, it is an ok song, but I guess I was expecting every song on Stevie's album to be much better. Guess I need to reconsider my expectations

Hmmm... I wonder how many Dave Stewart duets then are going to be on the new album.

I have been hoping for some time that she reworks "Prettiest Girl in the World" or a modern version of "Mirror Mirror" for the album. Any thoughts?

I have to say I am not very impressed with what I have heard from Dave's album. I really hope Stevie stays away from Country! I am nervous this may be her country album.
