I found a file on my computer that I made compiling lists of Stevie's copyrighted songs that she's written. It seems everytime Stevie writes a song and records a demo, she submits it for copyright, with a music cassette and printed lyrics. Here are some of the interesting things that surprised me:
"Monica" ~ Written in 2000, music by Rick Nowels. Re-submitted in 2003. "Tear It Down" ~ Written in 1995, re-submitted in 1997. "Tall Man Riding" ~ Written in 1977, renewed in 2005. "Those Bells" ~ Submitted in 1981, along with "Sorcerer" (which was written in 1972). "Lady From The Mountains" ~ Written in 1972! "Hard Advice" ~ Written in 1995 (Could this be "That Made Me Stronger"?) "Cathouse Blues" ~ Written in 1970!!! "Without You" ~ Also written in 1970, music & lyrics by Stevie solo. "Dial The Number" ~ 1986 & 1988, music co-written by Sandy Stewart! "Watch Chain", "Smile At You" and "Secret Love" all written in 1977. "Listen To The Rain" ~ The original 1991 copyright lists Jon Bon Jovi as a co-writer (Ginny Kamano said that he produced the original TimeSpace version as well.) "Free Style" ~ Written in 1985, music by Les Dudek. (Les has this listed on his website). "Blue Water" ~ Written in 1978, renewed in 1997. "The Charmed Ones (The Song For City Of Hope)" ~ Copyrighted as originally written in 1982, and another recording of it copyrighted in 1986. So, I wonder what this "Monica" sounds like??? Another Stevie Lady!!! |

Thanks for the info Mike....its always interesting to find out all of this stuff. I always had a feeling that the City of Hope song was written earlier. Plus her voice sounds early RAL like '84 (or should I say MM lp)......I love Blue Water and the original Listen to the Rain (at least lyric wise) to my hears is much much better than the offical SA version released......I wonder if Monica is about Monica Lewinski? and the President?? I like Dial the Number but I thought we had a demo or is it an outtake form The Wild Heart Lp for that in '83?? Its all very very interesting.....

Sue, those "Dial The Number" dates (1986 & 1988) were for the specific recordings, but it's not specified when the song was written, so it may have been written in 1982/83 with "Nightbird" and the others. Some copyrights state when the song was written and some only when a specific version was recorded.

"Lady From The Mountains" written in 1972, is actually "Sorcerer". That was what they were calling it when Buckingham Nicks were performing it in 1974.
I do believe the actual song, "Lady from the Mountain" that we all know and love, wasn't written til 1978 or 1979. |

Wasn't there a song 'Helen' somewhere? I've never heard it, but I could have sworn I've seen it on a list (back in the old photocopy mailing lists days...)
That would another addition to 'Stevie's Ladies'... |

City of Hope was also renewed in 1997, possibly for inclusion on Enchanted?
Also, I believe Monica is Everybody Finds Out. She refers to it as so in Destiny Rules.

Dumb me, I haven't watched Destiny Rules in forever! I never caught that the first time even.
I remember "Helen" somewhere, too. The copyright Search pages have changed and are just impossible to navigate, Four years ago, "Stevie Nicks" or "Stephanie Nicks" typed in would produce only Stevie songs, paintings, CDs, etc. NOW, it will draw up anything even remotely similarly spelled, like "Nick's Blues Mix Tape" or "Robert Nicks" and 10,000 more. "Those Bells" sounds like it could be a chilling title! |

Given Stevie's love of Poe, I wonder if "Those Bells" is her take on Poe's "The Bells."

Ooh, what a cool thought!!!!
I also wonder what "Tear It Down" sounds like, written in 1995, one of Stevie's newest songs when she began writing again in '95. I wish Stevie would do a 2-disc of Trouble in Shangri-la, including the extra songs, alternate takes, and demos from the era. I really find that timespace fascinating! |
