That may be her worst ever lyric, tied with the dreaded chimpanzee line...

The Master recording is from March 1978.

During a Jim Ladd interview, Stevie said she wrote "Blue Water" in Hawaii on a break during the Rumours tour. She also sings a few lines in this interview as well.

I dunno who the gypsy in "Blue Water" might be. In the original "Gypsy" of 1980, Stevie is the Gypsy herself. "Gypsy" doesn't morph into being Robin-related until Early 1982 when the Mirage version is recorded and Stevie adds the "She is dancing away from me now..." lines, after Robin's diagnosis in Fall 1981.

When did Stevie meet Sharon? I thought it wasn't until 1980 or so. Sharon is definitely on the master recording and is supposedly a co-writer of the song as well. Also, the master recording doesn't sound like 1978-era Stevie- she has that raspy/husky sound that didn't really develop properly until the Tusk tour.

As Stevie and Sharon have both stated in various interviews, this song was written in Hawaii (1977) right after they met. Sharon was performing at a club in Lahaina with her band at the Blue Max. Stevie was in the audience and jumped on stage to sing with Sharon after they'd started singing one of Stevie's songs. After the show, Stevie introduced herself, they started talking about music and hitting it off. Sharon said that Stevie was staying at a beach house and really wished she had a piano because the ocean was inspiring her to want to write. Sharon called up a friend that night and managed to get a piano over to the beach house. In the Wild Heart interview with Jim Ladd, Stevie says they stayed up that night and wrote "Blue Water". They even sing a little bit of it for Jim. Stevie also says that's when she asked Sharon to join her band whenever her solo career got off the ground. I remember in a different interview with Sharon, she said that when Stevie asked her to join her band, Sharon laughed and said, "No problem!"

Thanks for the info... I knew the story, but I wasn't 100% sure of the timeframe. It's shocking that they go back almost as far as Stevie's involvement in FM. Almost as shocking as the way Stevie sounds on the master recording- it presages her Bella Donna voice incredibly.

I had no idea this demo was that old! This very well might be the demo from "1976" that Stevie has rerecorded for her new album. We all know how revisionist and forgetful Stevie is about things... she doesn't remember what her own songs are about, when she recorded them, or even their own names (I Have Always Been A Storm). But after all the drugs and things she's been through, I guess she's lucky to even get her own name right!
