Currently putting together a poster for “Have your Cake and Eat it” brief and after swinging around ideas of what lovely Lady to bring to the platform (Virginia Woolf, Silvia Plath, Debby Harry, Elizabeth I, Amelia Earhart, The Bronte Sisters, Frida Khalo and many more ) I have settled on the enravelling summary of a song by Stevie Nicks, Gypsy, a favourite of mine and my mum’s. After almost a decade out of the limelight we got the opportunity to see Fleetwood Mac live at Wembly last year, and Stevie was in her element. After knowing the story and turbulent journey of the band, and her extensive solo career, to hear her explain and reminisce about the meaning behind each song before singing made the experience all the more intimate. She captivates the audience with her etherial wandering soul even now, always young (she’s 65). For me the song means a return to where you first started out, where you were first stimulated by the nature of simply creating something in your room, and sometimes you can lose that, it can be blurred. She became incredibly famous, but always felt like that material-less gypsy, content with the little things:

In my Doheny house – in my English house. I just went through an experience that wasn’t particularly pleasant and I moved out of my big English bedroom into the little back bedroom that was all…the lady that owned this house had put all this French wallpaper up that was flowers and it was beautifully, beautifully done. It’s just a little tiny room and put my bed back on the floor, moved my JBLs [speakers] in there, all my plants… all my junk, everything I had into this tiny little room about as big as this sofa, you know and I just lived in there for about 3 months. And I, it was really like living back in my apartment before I joined Fleetwood Mac…it was …I’m very comfortable living in one little room with my bed on the floor and kind of lace tacked up at the windows.

That's interesting. So 'paper flowers' in Gypsy refers to flowered wallpaper. Hmm, somehow that completely went over my head since 1982. I thought Gypsy's paper flowers were just that: flowers artfully made from colored tisue paper and arranged in vases or as wall decorations. In the video, I always strained to look in the bedroom scene (where she's on the floor, that she loves) to find paper flowers somewhere. It never occurred to me to look at the wallpaper.

"When 'Whenever I Call You 'Friend' ' by Kenny Loggins was released on Columbia in July 1978, Warner Bros. didn't bat an eye that one of their biggest stars was a very noticeable uncredited special guest: Stevie Nicks. (Although the part was originally going to go to Loggins' co-writer, Melissa Manchester, the authors agreed that Nicks would be better suited for the song).

Stevie Nicks? 5’1″. Bonus to her for that weird gypsy/witch thing that she does, all scarves and twirling and singing about druids or sea goddesses or whatever, which basically means that she was really, really high on cocaine a lot.

But man, she was a hottie, am I right? Of course I am. I’d like to Fleetwood Mac her Gold Dust Woman, am I right? Huh? Am I?

Blamma!Blamma! and Stevie Nicks

A little nostalgia here for Kunk as our very first foreign guest act way back in early 2008 was indeed the boys of Blamma!Blamma!. Very cool pair, super nice, and great live set. Since that time the Blammas suffered the unthinkable: one of their members passed away. In the loving memory of Martin, a little while back, Nick released some of the tracks they had been working on. One of which we’re sharing below.

As you can quickly make out, it’s has the unmistakable refrain from Stevie Nicks epic early 80s opus, Edge of Seventeen. This re-work launches it into contemporary times — undergirding it with some sweet backbeat and electronica dancefloor flavor.

Kunkers have basically a perpetual hard-on for anything fleetwood mac, stevie nicks, or otherwise, so we’re more than pleased to see this track as one of the ones emerging from the vault. All hail the Blammas and let the beat go on.

This song comes on like the end of the world. Falling stars and explosions in slow motion. The chopped-up ghosts of Stevie Nicks slice into a shimmering melody that crackles and oozes under a field of distortion, overlaid onto a stomping push-pull beat, until the final minute when the voices coalesce into, maybe, “I tell everybody, Is this the end? That’s what I meant.” Put it on repeat.

Trouble in Shangri-La(the song) / Stevie Nicks

Stevie shimmered back in 2001 with her most classic-Stevie-Nicks-sounding song since who knows when. Obtuse lyrics + great melody = Stevie at her best. It almost makes me wonder if this song wasn't from the vaults - with Stevie, anything is possible. But it is latter day Stevie that didn't just not disappoint, it made you think that maybe she still had some spark and fire left in her after all. Props to Matt for putting this song back on my radar for reasons well known to him.

Westboro Baptist Church Cult - Topeka, KS

When I arrived at my internship one day, I discovered a common roadside attraction in Kansas had actually come to me. I have been spending my summer interning for a government agency that helps protect elderly residents of the state. But apparently, the people at Westboro Baptist Church Cult are offended by this. Across the street I saw a group of about eight people holding signs with messages such as “God Hates Jews,” “God Hates America,” and of course their most infamous sign, “God Hates Fags.”

For those unfamiliar with the Westboro Baptist Church Cult, they are a hate group of religious extremists based in Topeka, Kansas. You may have seen them on the news from some of their protests around the country. They are mostly known for picketing soldiers funerals because they believe American soldiers deserve to die because the American government protects and harbors homosexuals. That’s right: they hate the American military because it is too nice to the gays. I don’t know how they rationalize Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, but I’m sure it’s similar to how they rationalized protesting Stevie Nicks. (For those who don’t know, Westboro Baptist Church Cult protested a Stevie Nicks concert in Kansas City because her music will cause you to commit adultery and eat babies. I kid you not.)

I wore this to see "EAT, PRAY, LOVE"--a very apropo outfit for that movie, don't cha think?--but this is somewhat of my normal eveyday kinda wear for people who follow this blog. The movie was--eh--maybe a 6.5 on the 1-10 scale--it wasn;t as deeply profound, impacting, or as enlightening as I thought it would be. But I was with great company--me Mum--and we enjoyed the scenery and cinemagraphy, and the music--and my Mother was really overjoyed to hear her girl Stevie Nicks "Dreams" playing in one of the scenes as she is of the Stevie Nicks OBSESSED! smile so cute!

Madonna is reportedly in talks with promoters to sign up to a five year residency in Las Vegas, which could earn her $1 billion.

It's not clear which venue in the US city she is talking to, though it is likely to be the Caesars Palace hotel and casino. Cher is currently due to finish a three year residency at the venue next year, while Elton John completed at five year stint in 2009 and Stevie Nicks a three year run in 2007. Celine Dion's five year residency at Caesars Palace, also completed in 2007, reportedly drew almost three million people to see 717 performances. So successful was it, the Dion will return for another three year run in 2011. However, it's thought the Madonna could surpass Dion's success.

If Madonna agrees the deal, it would also make her the third highest paid female entertainer in the world, after Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart.

SL: When I saw you in Vegas, you surprised me with a great Stevie Nicks impersonation. Out of all of the characters or personas you use when you perform, do you have a favorite, or do you value each of them equally?

Shannel: I think they're all valuable - I mean you like doing certain characters more than others. I love to do Lucille Ball and I love to do Joan Crawford and Judy Garland, but there's other characters, like Boy George that I do only because I look like him, not because I really enjoy the character. With Stevie Nicks, I don't do that as a look-a-like, it's just because it's fun, and there's other characters like the Evil Queen from Snow White that I love to do where I'm not changing my makeup for her, I just look like her and you take on the persona. So, there's conceptualized characters like that - I do a lot of the Disney villains.
