Taku was on percussion, what is the name of the guy on piano? Was Ricky Peterson only on hammond? Was that Cornell Thigpen on piano?

I think she has been utilizing Darrell Smith in recent years.

Carlos Rios?? Oh, God...why? why? why? what does she see in him? Obviously, she CAN'T be that enamored with his guitar playing.

because he kept her standing when she couldn't stand on her own, that's why! At least that's what she rambled on about when introducing him on (I think) the Crystal Visions tour.

Standing in front of us in the taxi line were Carlos and Jana. I recognized him immediately and said, "You're Carlos Rios aren't you?" He looked a bit surprised and said yes. We told him that we'd come to Vegas specifically to see "Dreams" and that we were looking forward to it. That's when he introduced Jana. I didn't recognize her at first. We all talked for about 10 minutes while we were waiting in line...mostly about the show. Jana tipped us off that Stevie had brought back B&TB, How Still My Love and If Anyone Falls. Diana and I jumped up and down like giddy little schoolgirls. We asked about Sisters of the Moon (since Stevie had mentioned bringing it back for her Vegas shows in the Jim Ladd interview) and Jana and Carlos looked confused at each other. Jana said, "No. Stevie never mentioned that one in rehearsal." That was a little disappointing. But Carlos was a sweetheart and answered all our fanatical questions. He didn't have to do that. He was very nice and extremely funny. I don't think he's a bad guitar player at all. He and Jana psyched us up even more. |

I'm not a musician by any stretch, so feel free to take what I have to say with a grain of salt.
If Carlos Rios were a bad guitar player, do you think Fleetwood Mac would have had him playing guitar for them on the Say You Will tour? If there's one thing I know about Fleetwood Mac, it's that they don't take you unless you're really good. Granted, he wasn't front and center with the four current members, but he was there with some of the additional musicians. I've actually heard second hand that a musician friend of a dear friend of mine was BLASTING Waddy Wachtel, saying he was the worst lead guitarist in the professional music world. I haven't heard similar comments about Carlos.

Regarding Waddy, you could say that he is from the same school of sloppy guitar playing as Eric Clapton, who was nicknamed "Slowhand" for a reason. They are both more about "feel" and texture rather than lightning-fast technical proficiency. I like Waddy because his playing is so "in the moment" and dynamic; he really feels the music. My favorite Waddy moments are during the end of the live version of "Bella Donna," when Stevie wails and he wails back on guitar with the same notes and intonation ala Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. He's not an autopilot drone, and that's what makes him so interesting to watch/hear. |
