why does she repeat the same verse/bridge?

I like the coastal cities...

she says that in both Ilume and Destiny Rules, has anyone else noticed? Any thoughts why they wouldn't realize and cut one out?

Actually I think she was probably too busy crying in the morning, trying to be strong, and waiting for the spring to trun into the fall.

On a serious note though, I don't think that it was a matter of FM not realizing that the verses are in both songs. Obviously this was a very intentional thing. Maybe she sees a parallel between the two songs that I am missing?

She "redeems" [as someone earlier suggested in another thread] the lyrics, which in "Illume" are situated in the pain and sorrow of the tragedy.

While "Destiny Rules" seems to be about Lindsey and their relationship, at that point in the song perhaps she is extending the concept of destiny driving the city of New York and it ultimating overcoming 9/11.

maybe she once lost the lyrics in "a tunnel to the sea" so she figured she better write them down twice on this album just in case...

Still, i don't really agree with the parallel thing, i agree with the thought that she is paralleling the two, I thought that the othe rday, just not that the redeeming thing.

Destiny rules is about destiny not being on the side of her love, I mean maybe if she is saying it was destiny for the towers to fall..like her relationship was destined to break..that makes more sense to me.

Great song though..better used in destiny rules than Illume.

A working river! It means a river that is motivated, has a good attitude, and doesn't slack off. Not like those damned lazy rivers!

I'm guessing it means a waterway that isn't just there for looks but is an integral element of a city's transport infrastructure, like so many rivers we can name. When I hear this line my mind turns to London or Florence for some reason.

I think it works great in Destiny Rules, and it's such good imagery that it's worth hearing once over in a positive context.

Has anybody noticed the day/night water scenes in the SYW CD lyric booklet ... the night on the first one and morning in the second sort of remind me of the repeated lyrics and the two different moods.

being a New Yorker myself and a history buff,

the Hudson River is the perfect "working river"

1)cascading down from Canada, the Adriondacks and the Catskills mountains, streams and rivulets straight back to the sea or the Atlantic in this case. It envelops the Island of Manhattan. The East River being a branch of the Hudson...

2) the Hudson River is the only River in North America to flow both ways...south from Canada and backwashed North from the power of the Atlantic a good thirty to forty miles.

3)which also makes one of the few rivers in North America to be both fresh and salt water.

4) and just another tidbit, most of the materials (clay for bricks) that built the NYC skyscrapers were carted down the River from the towns where I grew up...

5) during the Revolutionary War, the British stretched a chain across the River from West Point. You can still see parts of that chain at West Point.

6) another tidbit, the first Riverboat Steamer, Fulton's Folly, actually maiden sailed the Hudson not the Might M.

thanks for your insights-thats what I pictured a working river to be. It just seemed odd that an odd line is repeated in 2 songs on the same album. That's our girl!! (p.s. I'm not knocking it-I do think it works in both songs and especially Destiny Rules-which I didn't think I'd like when I first heard the title- currently it might be my fav song on the album!)

I agree with both of you.

Stevie does get these images in her mind, words she like the sound of or feel of, and then she uses them to death. Personally I think she should edit a little when she does that, but then, maybe she has !!!!!!!!

Maybe the songs originally had MORE repetition.

That's just Stevie!

At least, after all this time, we know what she means. Well...for most of them...
