Agreed. Straight Back is another all-time fav! I love the spooky, mystical air about it... it's no Sisters Of The Moon or Gold Dust Woman, but it's not far off! Agreed! |

The lyrics to Freedom are certaintly angry and passionate but the vocal is lifeless and lacks anything remotely close to anger, passion or inspiration. I've always hated the way she sang that song, from the very first time I heard it. In my opinion, that poor vocal performance ruined what could have been a shining Nicks moment.

I chose 'Straight Back' but think 'Kick It' is really a "doubly-hidden gem" as it was on her least successful solo cd up til that time, and was the first of her solo albums not to have a vinyl format release, so it's just kind of wasted near the end of the cd, which maybe some people didn't get all the way through!
I always thought 'KI' had some of her most interesting lyrics, and a kind of wisdom about it that was under appreciated. Have always really liked the sound, the recording, the vocal, just about everything about 'Kick It' |

Welcome to The Ledge, ye of one post! Stick around... They go quickly, you'll be up into the 2 and 3 digits before you know it! I have to say the line you quoted: "I can see you're waited for all over you" is one of my favorite lines SN has written. It's so everything-- observant, ironic, dry, bitter, hilarious, a severe put down, an appreciative observation, a sad realization that the affair is doomed- to me, it's a great piece of lyric writing. |

I thought it was directed as a slam at the self-important man, that he had told her 'I'm waited for in Egypt,it's just something I must do"-- he's so wanted, they even want him in Egypt, and her replying ' Yes, I can see you're waited for... all over you"- -then next, "All day and all night, all over the world, it's your world"- so, kind of telling him, 'everything in the entire world is all about you, I get it". And so, if everything about their love affair is all about him, thats why she prefers to 'Kick It'-- that's my best guess. Why she chose Egypt, who knows, it's something she also did with 'Doing The Best That I Can'- subtitling it: ("Escape From Berlin"). Maybe she used these far-away exotic locales as metaphors for big emotions, it makes some sense if I don't think about it, a lot. But to answer your question, in my best Eunice's Mama's voice: "How the hail should Ah know?" So, that's not too helpful, so I tried to come up with something! Stevie lifted that line in question from Oscar Wilde's "The Happy Prince" "I am waited for in Egypt," said the Swallow. "My friends are flying up and down the Nile, and talking to the large lotus- flowers. Soon they will go to sleep in the tomb of the great King. The King is there himself in his painted coffin. He is wrapped in yellow linen, and embalmed with spices. Round his neck is a chain of pale green jade, and his hands are like withered leaves." "Swallow, Swallow, little Swallow," said the Prince, "will you not stay with me for one night, and be my messenger? The boy is so thirsty, and the mother so sad." "I don't think I like boys," answered the Swallow. "Last summer, when I was staying on the river, there were two rude boys, the miller's sons, who were always throwing stones at me. They never hit me, of course; we swallows fly far too well for that, and besides, I come of a family famous for its agility; but still, it was a mark of disrespect." But the Happy Prince looked so sad that the little Swallow was sorry. "It is very cold here," he said; "but I will stay with you for one night, and be your messenger." One of Stevie's many little plagiarism's from her favorite writers Wilde, Poe etc. over the years, but that's another thread entirely. The new 1st verse of Planets of the Universe borrows near exact imagery from Poe. Last edited by Christopher; 07-24-2010 at 06:06 PM.. |

nice stab Nicolaj, but i think the (escape from Berlin) had something to do with her being on tour with Fleetwood Mac, in Germany when the Wall came down. so that might not be as random as the Egypt reference. anyhoo, thanks for your reply. you've made me feel so welcome |

Thanks, Christopher, that was very impressive. I seem to recall someone (Viv?) saying that 'Annabelle Lee' was almost verbatim from Poe. At least in 'Kick It' it wasn't a total 'lets set this to music' thing, just a country (Egypt) and a line or two.
