Us die hard fans were longing for new stuff and the casual fans looked at it and said, what?! No Rhiannon? No Edge of Seventeen? No Dreams?? No Gold Dust Woman? I liked what Stevie did with Soundstage and how she decided to put some not so well known songs on it, but I think the album fell short with the fact that it had so few songs on it and several covers. And the DVD was great too, but the DVD was more expensive and a lot of non-hardcore Stevie fans don't want to take the time or money to pay 15-20 dollars and watch a 2 hour show. However, I think new material would do a lot better seeing as all the hardcore fans will buy it and casual fans will be more open to buying it because it is new instead of it being a live CD that is lacking their favorites. But I do agree that VH1 should team up with her again. Or Apple. If she could get her name plastered all over iTunes and have one of her songs played in an iPhone commercial, it could work wonders.
I completely disagree with you on some points. The casual fan has plenty of options (product) to obtain the popular songs. If they are a causal fan then they probably already have those songs, likely on more than one CD. Most people were indifferent to Soundstage Sessions because they've seen and heard it all before...in better form.

The premise that more of her popular songs weren't on the album was the reason her live album didn't sell more is faulty. In fact, her well-known songs have suffered for being over-exposed and over-done. If she included new, inspired original material (aside from the cover songs), at least it would have been a success from an artisic perspective. Perhaps one of the new songs could have been a hit, thus redefining Stevie as a current force. Alas, she's driven a limited amount of her signiture songs into the ground. Most artists of her age and career length do give credence to the songs that made them famous, but they don't hold on to them for dear life -- they move on artistically and create new signiture songs, something new to redefine themselves. Stevie has stagnated, both musically and in image for the last decade or so...just coasting on a small collection of old well-worn songs.

It's kind of sad to see her try to maintain the image of who she was when she was in her twenties, like the twirls everyone expects her to do in her sixites. It's so expected and so reduntant...we've seen this act a million times before. It's not reasonable to expect her to sell as much as she did in during her heyday in the eighties, but it's time to move on.

^^^PenguinHead- wow. The part about being who she was in her 20s, 'still twirling after all these years' is a haunting observation. I agreed with you most about the songs from 30+ years ago being 'unleashed' far too often and having worn them into the ground. Sad, that.
Happily, though, I think she is addressing it as we type, recording new music we hope to have this fall.
This new cd could change a lot of how she decides to perform (and what she chooses to sing) from now on, if she is especially fond of the new material and knows that as you say, it's time to move on, or 'add to' who she was, as it surely is time.
I hope she feels encouraged and happy. I think we are likely to get some interesting choices this summer if she knows her fans still have faith in her talent, that we'll be there, and we're glad that she still performs for us.

Oh I completely agree from a average to hardcore fan's perspective. That was the part I meant when I said we wanted new while casual fans were looking for her hits. By casual fans I mean those people who don't go out and buy all of her albums, who liked some of her songs back in the day and maybe bought some of her records but she was never one of their favorites and today they have Timespace or possibly Crystal Visions and they are standing in line at Best Buy and they see oh hey, Stevie Nicks has a new live album, but they don't know any of these songs. And Stevie has never released a full live album before, so as far as live versions go I don't think casual fans would have many live versions, if any at all. I agree, I am so tired of the same hum drum she shoves down our throat, and that is why Soundstage didn't fare well with fans, but she did use a lot of songs that haven't been done to death and those didn't fare well with her casual fans either. Point being, Soundstage should not be a judge as how well a new studio album from her will do.

It's nice that some of you here have been able to see Stevie live enough times (or have heard enough bootlegs) to be tired of many of the older tunes, but do remember that some of us newer fans haven't had the chance to see her perform at all beyond video recordings.

I know I won't get the chance to see her unless she comes a little closer to home, which probably isn't happening on this summer tour or excursion or whatever she's up to. But I know I certainly wouldn't mind hearing the hits as I'm far from tired of them, even counting all the times I've heard the album versions or heard live recordings. Of course, my obsessive love of the Mac/Stevie has developed relatively recently, so I'm still discovering all kinds of new things. I think there are bound to be lots of newer fans who don't frankly care about the setlist and just want to see Stevie perform (until they became older fans, and by then there will be new newer fans who just want to see Stevie perform, if she'd even be performing by then).

I've been a fan from the start of FM, I stiill go see the shows regardless of the set list. I think you nailed in when you said you just want to see the performance...

Sadly, I don't think radio's going to give more than a cursory mention of Stevie when her new CD drops. They might play her new song maybe once, maybe twice, then they might shift over and play her classics a little bit more.

She'd practically have to go down on every radio exec there is for them to play her, and that just ain't happening.

The upshot is that her record might still do well enough to bring in some new fans and give her diehards a chance to see her live again.

Is this the first time Mick has been involved in a solo Stevie project?? My memory is tired right now...

Hey, where's SuiteShangriLa, you called this several days ago in the 'possible Stevie sighting' thread! Your sources were right!

I'm not really surprised at Mick's involvement though, Stevie likes to stay with her tried and true buddy list.

I'm smiling too! Those guys (Mike Campbell/Mick Fleetwood) are great influences for Stevie. I hope this new album hits it out of the ballpark (artistically, and hopefully commercially) and re-establishes Stevie as an artist that still has something new and viable to offer.

I was mainly referring to Mick because I hadn't heard he was involved . But I'm actually very glad Mike is a part of the process, too. I really like his decidedly rock influence on Stevie. Especially after hearing that very Adult Contemporary/Middle Of The Road snippet of "Everybody Loves You." (Where's that damned barfing smilie again?!? )

Here's the whole article:

Dave Stewart working on Stevie Nicks album together with Mick Fleetwood

Dave Stewart told ethrill.net today that he is not only working in the studio together with Mike Campbell (Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers) on the next Stevie Nicks album, but also with the help of Mick Fleetwood!

As reported here in the past months Stewart and Nicks have written and recorded numerous songs together already including at least one duet (see previous news posts about the collaboration and listen to a first snippet here).

Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood are musical partners in “Fleetwood Mac” (“Rumours”, “Tusk”) since 1974 when Nicks joined the legendary band. Although she had as successful solo career as well, they re-joined over the past decades again and again.

The writing and recording sessions for Dave Stewart’s upcoming solo album are going to start soon in Nashville but at the moment he is still in the studio with Stevie, Mike and Mick.
