Believe me, you speak German very very well. When, after 8 years of studying it, you don't even know how to translate what you just quoted, then you can say that your German is "schlecht". Have I mentioned that I have a German exam in two days? Damn.

Anyway, wilkommen ! Good to see some Europeans here

Haha, yeah, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you can't translate it because it doesn't actually say anything at all What level of German are you in? I'm going to be taking my last class in Vienna in January and the whole class is going to be taught.in.German. I'm going to die. Good luck on your exam!

well, actually, when I focus, i can translate some parts, though i don't know what "eigene" means, or "sicher", or "wunderbar", but this last one, in the context, is pretty obvious (i thought it had something to do with wonderbras before ). Vienna is a beautiful city, i've been there, but just for a day. Are you going alone ? Because then yes, you're gonna die !
I've been learning German since the secondary school, and now i'm in high school. Exactly 8 years of doing nothing. I've been in Germany once, it was awesome, the only words i used were "ja" and "nein", but somehow, i managed to have fun

I think eingene means own, I know sicher means sure, und ja wunderbar ist wonderful So what I was going for was that I don't have a problem reading German, but that it's really hard to make my own sentences (for example, I'm sure this sentence isn't correct.) That is probably not what I said. Thankfully I'm not going alone; I'll be with an entire college class. I've never been outside of the U.S, so I'm really excited. My high school German was absolutely useless. In four years, I never learned half as much as I did in a semester of college.

Yeah, after reading it 3 times, i finally found out what it meant ! , and i think you didn't make any mistakes (though i'm not the one who should tell you that). I had terrible high school teachers : one of them did a nervous breakdown, the other was a German cliché (big blond girl, constantly talking about the beer festival and yelling at us with her deep voice, with an accent..., good times). I finally decided to stop learning German, and college will be dedicated to English for me.
Oh, and, when you live in the U.S, why would you need to go anywhere else?

Welcome, Bernd! I work with a whole team of amazing Germans that I only get to see once a year, two of them are named Bernd!

I haven't been to Europe (I have student loans, and a lot of snacks to buy) yet but some time I plan on making a trip to Germany solely to go visit a specific yarn store in Pfaffenhofen, that's how awesome the yarn is.

Welcome!

All the German I know, I learned from KMFDM, Wumpscut, Rammstein, Einsturzende Neubauten, Rotersand, Die Krupps and similar.

Which isn't really good for conversations, like.

But welcome to the Ledge!

As far as I can tell from this your German is really quite good. You made some mistakes but I can understand you without a problem. It must be terrible hard to learn. I must say I would never learn German if it wasn't my mother tongue . The sentence you thought was wrong is actually right, just write "lesen" with a capital l and leave out the comma after "machen" - then it's perfect! And don't be afraid of going to Austria. The people there won't kill you because you can't speak German perfectly. It's important you try to speak even if you make mistakes because you can only improve if you practice. And it will be a great practice to be mainly surrounded by German speakers. I'm going to England in August and I'm really looking forward to get to talk with native speakers (you can't think about an England holiday nerdier... ).
Thank you, I'm glad the English I post is wunderbar but there's still so much I don't know how to express in English, I feel just the same as you. I understand pretty much everything here but when I'm posting a reply I often have problems with writing own sentences. And since Germans think English is so much cooler than German there is no German word for "post". We just "german" it and say "posten".

Well, that's maybe true.

Alas, I don't know any other fans of those bands these days. Except for Rammstein, but that one's fairly common.

I wish you posted with an accent. I love the way that German sentences have a really old English feel to them (haha, I know, I know, we developed a lot FROM you guys, so old English sentences really have a German feel to them), but, because my life is a tragedy, your English is too good to indulge me Anyway, your vacation will be so much fun. I'm definitely planning on making an England stop when I'm in Europe.
