Really? I don't think any of the criticism has to do with Stevie's gender. I found the cover story that Mick and Stevie made up about why Sheryl didn't join the band (i.e. had a small child to care for and didn't want to miss mother's day) a bit more disturbing on that level.

I don't even really see hostility in Mick's comments. I guess I just give him the benefit of the doubt not because he's not a jerk, but because I don't think he wants to rub Stevie the wrong way right now. Also, I tend to agree with the person who posted that Mick might have been delicately saying that Stevie didn't want to open for the Eagles. If by daylight and lighting he really meant that Stevie was afraid she'd look bad if the shows started earlier, then I agree that's harsh and a low blow meant to indicate that she's vain, but I'm not really 100% sure that's what he meant.

Since they did still use the back up musicians, it wasn't actually as stripped down as it looked, but there was just an intimate, spare quality to the performance, with them all standing together on the edge of the stage. Gives me chills to remember.

Also about the daylight thing, it would mean FM would be opening for the eagles which maybe Stevie didn't want to do, but also, maybe she didn't want to be sweating her ass off in the sun under all her get up.

That's my feeling on it... but the daylight thing kind of fits in with Stevie's personality, so it's plausible.

Michelej1 has always seemed to be a fantastic voice of reason, so I could have been very wrong about my interpretation of some of Mick's statements. Late into the article, there's an interesting comment:

Heading out with the Blues Band reminds Mick of his early days with Fleetwood Mac, long before their transformation into global rock stars packing arenas and stadiums.

"We're not at all plugged into a production, we don't even have a lighting guy," he explains, chuckling. "It's all about playing, and it's freer."

That seems a reference too, to Stevie and/or touring with Mac, but he's entitled to note such differences about performing live with his other bands. Something, though, about how he mentions wanting to work with Joe Walsh, and claims LB might be open to performing as 'Men of Mac'-- it seems like a way of him asserting that with or without SN, he will continue to work and do fine, which is an ok statement to make, in of itself. To specifically mention Joe Walsh and Lindsey- oh, maybe it has nothing to do with Stevie at all.
Back in December, someone who knew, said that Fleetwood Mac was 'always going to be the opening act' and that it wasn't really a 'co-headlining tour', I don't know, either way. I'm still glad SN said 'No' and actually, I do understand why Mick felt it was a great opportunity.
I'm glad things have balanced out, now. At first, most people saw so much to blame SN for in the article, and I didn't see it at all, and maybe was too harsh about Mick. Now, I'm seeing that Michele- and others- have good points that they've brought up here.

No, you definitely could be right. I guess because it's Mick, I just gave him a pass, because after the nineties when they all had their digs at each other, he's been so gracious about everyone and kind of put a nice face on everything, because he wanted to keep the door wide open for future reunions. So, he's been careful not to give offense and I guess that's what made me discount the import of his words.

If someone else had said it (like Lindsey), I'd be positive he meant it in a not-nice way.

The costly solo tours certainly seem fulfilling to him, gratifying, but not in a selfish way. They're a creative outlet and seem to be more about camaraderie and group participation. If anything, I see them as more orgy than masturbation.

Eh, the last time I saw Lindsey solo, the first three rows were only about 20% filled, with the front row almost entirely empty (he was playing to about 650- or about half the modest-sized venue's capacity)... he certainly pawed at his guitar enough to make sure everyone knew he was in the zone!!! or whatever. Its just kind of pathetic when dude spends more money on jet fuel than he could even make off the show even if it was a sellout.

Why is that pathetic? He's earned his money, he should do with it what he
wishes. I'm very glad he did the solo tours. Turned out to be one of the best
concerts I've ever seen. He certainly seemed to enjoy it.

Only Phil would know, but when I read what Phil wrote, I think he was referring to some of the earlier comments that were written here about SN in reply to the Mick article posted in this thread.
At first, people replying were pretty upset with Stevie, not sure why, about the Mick article. Some of the angrier comments struck me as misogynistic. Michelej1, one comment in particular stood out, and remains, but I'm glad the tide has shifted.

I like for how for a couple of pages that this turned into a debate about country music. Good music is good music, I would think. The right song or singer can make a person like what they didn't think they did.
The first time I heard Martina McBride was when she sang 'Where Would You Be' and I was blown away- thought she was a cross between Caruso and Streisand. 'Those pipes in country music?- Who knew?' I have a good live dvd by McBride, but I don't buy her cds. So far, I haven't heard her sing anything that's made as much of an impact on me as the first time I heard her.

Stevie, I love most as a rock singer. How I wish she had rocked a lot, a little more, on past albums. Now, I'm happy to accept her sing whatever genre(s) of music she feels best about recording and releasing. I somehow expect her not to sing rock as much, now.
Ageist, realistic, both, or neither? I wonder.
But, I buy anything and everything Stevie puts out there, if it were a cd of polkas, and a dvd of her narrating a documentary about polar bears, I'd probably have both

Nikolaj, yes you understood my comments well but as you also point out, this thread appears to have progressed beyond the concerns I had.
I am interested in anything Stevie does so I too will support her endeavours, no matter what they may be. That doesn't mean I'll necessarily enjoy the result but I'm open to any possibilities.
PS David, I adore "Circle Dance", always did and always will. I remember the first time I heard the original Bonnie version upon release, I instantly thought of Stevie and fantasised about her one day covering it. It's disappointing that the version she chose to officially release was a duet (nothing against Carlton mind) because I particularly enjoyed her solo takes on it. A gorgeous and insightful song. I'd love her to have a crack at "I Can't Make You Love Me" as well.

I am a Circle Dance worshipper! I was thrilled when she started including it in her set and swooned when I heard it live. I had never heard the original before. And I couldn't agree more about the Vanessa Carlton thing - that version was quite different sounding and I didn't particularly enjoy Vanessa being on it. Much better Stevie solo. When I listen to that song I never listen to the released version, only my live boots.

I've been looking for a good live boot of this, care to share one?

I think it would be more pathetic and masturbatory if he was raking in millions from FM and not reinvesting it in solo work, just because he knows that the solo work is not going to make him any money.

I get the feeling that the nice hotels and private jet also ensure that he gets the players he wants and doesn't lose them to bigger acts. Judging from the little asides he was making, I think he minded the fact that Taku left him -- at least he did initially. Maybe in the longterm it worked out for the best. I sort of think adding the extra luxuries helped him keep Neale and Brett from picking up work with a bigger act. I think his two solo tours are far less self-indulgent than his FM ventures.

In fact, what upset me most about Mick's recent comments is the fact that Lindsey is purportedly open to corporate gigs where he can continue getting paid for playing GYOW and nothing else for the rest of his life, rather than giving us another round of money-losing solo shows.

I think Jennifer Nettles has that impact on people. They are like, "who is that?" The voice pulls them in.
