Can anybody tell me/does anybody know if Kenny G ever released a version of "Lily Girl" as something else? It's been bugging me since last night that that melody sounds SO familiar.. particularly his solo sax version!! Or maybe there's another reason it sounds so familiar (similar to another song)?

I just can't place it.. lol!

Here's "She Still Loves Him". Remember, I said that there is some hiss, but Stevie's vocals are just amazingly clear ~ I've never heard a better version! All other vocals are warbly or cause feedback. I would love to hear even better versions, but this is the best I've found.

It was amongst Maureen's Mystery Box,
Wow.. that's fantastic!!! If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll try and fiddle with it (noise reduction and such) to see if I can get it to sound a little better.... but it'll be hard to improve on the clarity of the vocals for sure! Thank you, Mike, for posting this!

UPDATE...

Here is my first attempt at cleaning the file up a bit... it's still far from perfect, but it sounds a little fuller to my ears with a little less hiss (hopefully without losing too much of the crispness in the vocals):

Let me know what you think... I can always tinker with it some more!

Not one of the Masters, but the best sounding version I've ever heard. I literally screamed in a Stevie-gasm when I first heard this last September! After many years of far inferior quality sound, I remain thrilled to be able to listen to one as good as this. Maybe someone has better quality and will post it, but this sounds exquisite to my ears.

Remember, this was recorded here in Dallas in 1982, produced by Gordon Perry for The Wild Heart.
And this does sound great too... I downloaded another version of this not too long ago, in FLAC format, and they appear to be from the same source. Unfortunately, they both do appear to be lossy (when you do a spectrum analysis.. maybe from 128-160 bitrate range.. I'm guessing there by comparing to other lossy sources).... but you're absolutely right that you'd be hard-pressed to find a better sounding copy of this track! And I've always loved this song...

Thanks again for sharing!!

I didn't know if anyone liked them ~ thanks for responding, Jeff! I'm DLing the version you worked with now and will let you know my thoughts.

I've heard many attempts at "fixing" both "She Still Loves Him" and "All The Beautiful Worlds" over the years, and they either diminished the (warbly) vocals or were just louder. I was just amazed at the crispness of the vocals of these two. It's so cool you know about all these technical/digital things. I'm more in the Stevie spectrum when it comes to technology...

Thank you Mike for posting "She Loves Him Still" - that is definitely the best quality version I have heard and I am supremely grateful for it. This has to be her most tender vocal ever - it just gets to me every time I hear it. Of course, I would love for her to one day record it properly but I don't know that she could ever match the original demo vocal - it truly is beautiful.

PS Jeff, I couldn't get your download to work so I'm afraid I can't comment on the work you did, but thanks for your efforts anyway!

Jeff, yes, Kenny G had a big hit with "Going Home", the instrumental of "Tragedy of One's Own Soul" and "Lily Girl". (I think it was released in 1990).

I remember being in the backroom of the Gap at NorthPark here in Dallas in 1996, and some sax music was playing on the Oasis, Dallas' "Smooth Jazz" radio station. Without realizing it, I started singing, "Ooh, and then something in the mail comes ~ and she goes a little bit into shock!"

It was a cool moment! I finally downloaded "Going Home" off of iTunes in 2005, and sometimes I'll play it and just sing along. I like "Lily Girl", but I think the majority of the lyrics on "Tragedy of One's Own Soul" are better.

That's it!! Thank you.... it must have been so long since I've heard the song, I had completely forgotten about it. My father used to listen to a smooth jazz station quite a bit (WNUA - Chicago) when I was small, and I'm sure they played it a lot back then.

That's alright... but if you're interested, here are a few mirrors (multiupload uploads to multiple mirrors, which is why I use it) and maybe one of these will work for you:

Jeff! I am BLARING your fantastic enhancing of "She Still Loves Him"!!!!!

OMFG!!!!!!! The intro without the hiss... Stevie's strong, clear emotional voice... the crisp instruments... and Stevie's incredibly sad final vocals as she reminds us, even those who wouldn't like to know: she still loves him.

I have chills ~ I'm SO Excited!!!!!!!!

GREAT WORK!!!!!

Hi guys - I disappeared all weekend and am just now getting back to reading through threads but it's great to see all the awesome stuff posted! Thank you everyone for these stellar downloads. I'll have to find some time to catch up this week.

Mike - yes I got that amazing version of The Nightmare - thank you. Soooo much better than the horrible quality 12" remix I have. I never even knew this version existed!

BTW, I used the very first link you provided for "She Still Loves Him" and it downloaded just fine for me and it plays flawlessly!

Now, get to work on "Thousand Days" and "What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done For You?"!!!!

It still sounds awesome though, and I REALLY appreciate the upload!!!
Yeah, this is my favorite version of "The Nightmare" and of "Rock A Little". I'm glad you did that spectrum check - I was wondering what a vinyl transfer would show. These tracks come from a CDR called BLUE CRYSTAL MIRROR that was made by a guy who sold cds back in the 90s under the label "Spiral Note Productions". I emailed back and forth quite a bit with him and am very sure in his promise these were direct digital transfers from his vinyl. He was a stickler for the highest quality on his CDs and it really shows in the sound.

I don't know what method he used to transfer them, or what type of turntable or cartridge/stylus he had - I'm sure it would affect the frequencies captured. What program do you use to do all these checks - I'd love to play with it and check lots of CDs I have!?!? How does the "drop off just under 20 khz" compare to mp3s you have checked and other vinyl sourced audio files? Did both of them have the same level drop? How did "Mirror Mirror" test - it was from the same CD.

Thanks Jeff for all the technical talk - it's so fascinating to me! You can reply with a private message if you want - I hate to get off topic in these threads!
