There ARE alternatives which can be set up; do a google search for mIRC, for example.

Yeah we need a chat room if we have to dl AIM or AOL or Skype (I think Louie mentioned they had rooms) or some other medium. I think the chatters that are diehard about chatting wouldn't mind the extra trouble and time downloading a program that would enable us all to chat.
