Stevie's appearence on SNL was on 12/10/83. I assume Solid Gold was around the same time.

I'm not sure, but wasn't the WH tour over by then? If so, she couldn't have done 'Nightbird' on stage even if she wanted to.

That said, doing the song on tv was only to promote it as the 3rd single from WH. She never seemed to have ever considered it as part of the tour setlist.

Being that the song is about the death of Robin, it was probably just too difficult emotionally to sing it night after night. She had enough trouble with Gypsy.

Stevie was gearing up for a tour in early 1984, with Julian Lennon opening. Announcements were even being made on L.A. radio of a big festival-style concert at the Anaheim Stadium with Stevie Nicks & David Bowie. Had that tour gone on as planned, "Nightbird" might have been part of the set.

These dates make sense - Nightbird was released in November of 83, so she was just promoting the newest single.

I'm bringing this thread back because I went searching for the SNL clip and couldn't find it on YouTube and I really wanted to send the link to someone and when I finally found it, it was right here on The Ledge. So I felt this clip needed a little more love.

I'm a very busy person, very social and always around people. But every once in a while I used to get hit with an incredible loneliness. That changed when I found someone special who is very important to me and he's taken that loneliness away. But a good friend of mine just posted on facebook that he's feeling that same loneliness that I always did. And it's a really odd feeling because you have tons of people around you, who you know love and care about you, but you just can't shake that feeling. And when Stevie sings "sometimes I am surrounded by too much love" you know exactly what that feels like. And being that this friend is really young I didn't want to just send the song, because when you're young you never just sit and listen to a song, you need a video to go with it. And this particular recording really emphasizes that line more than the Solid Gold clip, I think. So I sent him the direct link. I hope it makes him smile. Thank you to whoever still has that up on their photobucket page. It really means a lot to me to be able to share that with him right now.

LOL ..so true! And I would note that a Saturday Night Live audience is hardly "the whole world!"

I prefer that performance over the Solid Gold performance, mainly because it was done with a live band, and the ending was more lyrically consistent with the original version.

I much prefer the Solid Gold version. Better acoustics (especially the keyboard), plus Stevie's vocal sounds effortless. Also, the lighting and Stevie's facial expression look better to me - her eyes look pretty out of it in the SNL performance.

I remember Flip introducing her as a "rockin' and rollin' beauty queen" before "Stand Back", so I'm sure he liked her just fine, but it has always bothered me that this is the only SNL episode I've ever seen where the host forgot to thank/acknowledge the musical guest at the end of the show when they're on stage together with the cast. Of course the snub was unintentional, but I wanted to see the crowd applaud her again.

You know Saturday Night Live put out a box set of just musical guests. I can't remember when it came out, but I remember reading who was on it. It was a 5 disc set. I remember thinking how dissapointing Stevie was not on it. But anyway alot of people were asking why they were putting the box sets out and then they just stopped. It was because the music was costing them too much money. So they would either have to put the sets out without the music or just not put them out at all. So I guess that is why they quit.

The Solid Gold Shows I have not seen reruning anywhere for ages.

Yes was not happy that she was not in the SNL collection.

I know the Solid Gold one is already on you tube but I figured I'd add the SNL one too.

Stevie- Nightbird- SNL

Stevie-Nightbird- Solid Gold

Posted elsewhere, but this seemed like a great place for it too.

Stand Back and Nightbird, from SNL, 1983. Great quality.

Wow. Nightbird has always been one of my favorite SN solo songs, but I had never seen the SNL performance. Thanks! I prefer the vocal on the solid gold version- just came off a little more polished, and the slight deviations from the recorded version were spot on. The arrangement with Lori starting each line and Stevie coming in after her is so creative, I have never heard anyone else do something like that.

Wow ty for posting KarmaC!

This I believe catches the true excitement and essence of 83/84 when SB and Stevie was all the rage.

I'm embarressed to be a fan all these years and never really knew the true interpretation of the lyrics. One night, recently it hit me like a ton of bricks. I think I was listening to a live performance, possibly the SG version.

It all made sense when I put together the lines "One man did not fall (in love with me)....Well, you could be standing in a line"
