I was listening to to Out of the Cradle earlier today and started thinking about what it would have been like if elements of that album and The Other Side of the Mirror were added into the weaker spots of TITN.
OOTC was released in 1992 but Lindsey had been working on it before TITN, i.e. Big Love. There's a lot of similarity in the two. TOSOTM was 1989 and though it's still in what I call Stevie's "running on empty" period, it's still better than her additions to TITN. So in a seperate universe, devoid of time constraints, I combined the three and rearranged the order to create a whole new album. 1. Big Love- IMO their best opening track of all the albums. You don't have TITN without Big Love. 2. Long Way to Go- I always thought Seven Wonders (a fantastic song) shouldn't have followed Big Love because it unnecessarily slowed down the tempo of the album. After the five year hiatus, they should have come out guns blazing. Long Way compliments Isn't It Midnight well. 3. Everywhere- This is the place where the tempo can slightly slow and set the pace of the rest of the album. Christine's stuff was near perfect on the album, so why tinker with it? 4. Doing What I Can- I actually like the Caroline/TITN one-two wallop, but they sound so alike, they could probably be one song. Doing What I can exhibits the same sonic attitude of Long Way To Go and Isnt It Midnight. Keep the pace moving! 5. Tango In the Night- It's too good an album title to leave it out. But like I said, combine it with the pace he used in Caroline, and i think it would seem less lethargic. 6. Little Lies- No need to leave out the masterpiece. 7. Seven Wonders- IMO this was Stevie's only redeemable song on TITN. Just because I didn't leave it at two doesn't mean it shouldn't be in there. I think it flows well from Little Lies. 8. You Do or You Don't- GOODBYE FAMILY MAN. 9. Isn't It Midnight- The glue that holds the second half together. 10. Two Kinds of Love- Take out Bruce Hornsby and add Lindsey. Take out Kenny G and put in a guitar part, and you have a juggernaut. I'll admit that at that point of their "relationship" this song may have been impossible for them to do but it would sure be better than "Sara". 11. Who's Dreaming This Dream?- Obviously this really throws the whole semi-sortve realistic aspect out the door, but I can't stand "Mystified". Imagine the parts where Christine has the extra vocals being replaced with Buckingham Nicks harmonies. This song would have been epic in the Fleetwood Mac style. 12. You and I, Part II- Still the best way to close it out. This is the album I humbly submit for consideration. There are a few obvious points to keep in mind. 1. The sound of the added songs would obviously take a slightly different direction so they sounded cohesive. 2. This entire concept is an impossibility. But regardless, I think it's more cohesive, has almost zero fat whatsoever, and is tight and driven. There was no reason to have so many songs that failed to drive the listener like the original has. Oh well, just the musings of a what if kind of guy.

I like all three of these albums so much though. I would never want to see them spliced.

I wonder why Stevie didn't re-submit "Planets of the Universe" for Tango, since she was apparently short on good material. This is a great song and a Tango-era arrangement for it would have sounded dynamite.
I love the version on TISL, but... I also think "Dealer" could've been included. |
