What Kind Of Fan Are You???

I'm a fan of the music of all 16 members (whether it be in the band, solo, in another band/duo, guest appearance, whatever). Though I've been disappointed about some of the musical decisions they've made over the years (with one time former members returning etc.), I'd still class myself as a FM fan but as long as they're (or at least 1 of the 16 is...) on a recording regardless of what name it's under and it's released legally, I need it!

Ok, let's see...

It was Stevie's songs-esp. Sara, then Storms, Beautiful Child, Rhiannon and Dreams that made me a Fleetwood Mac fan. For many years I didn't really pay that much attention to the rest of the band.

Then I heard OOTC. It was a revelation. Now at least I knew where the greater part of that beautiful music came from. I became a Lindsey fanatic. In fact I came to the Penguin originally searching for news of Lindsey's album....8 years ago now. I am still a Lindsey fanatic.

On the Penguin I learned really for the first time from some of the Ledgies about Christine and I have learned to love her too.

I also learned about the Peter Green incarnation here on the Ledge and Peter Green is way up there right along with Lindsey=:-)

I don't care much for the other incarnations, although I have to say Rick Vito and Billy Burnette are no slouches on the guitar=:-)I just don't like the sound as much. Same with Bob Welch.

I am a Christine McVie fan FIRST, then a Fleetwood Mac fan. I just always related best to her music as well as her personality. If she's in the band, I'm happy. Most of my favorite Fleetwood Mac songs are Christine songs. I like the Rumours line-up & the various Bob Welch line-ups probably equally the best. My favorite Fleetwood Mac albums are Tusk & Mystery To Me. After Christine, my favorite members are probably Bob Welch, Lindsey, Peter Green, Billy Burnette & Danny Kirwan in that order. I am not much of a Buckingham/Nicks fan, although I really like quite a bit of Lindsey's music. I like the Peter Green era music ALOT, especially Peter & Danny's songs. I just can't get into Jeremy Spencer's music. I also liked the Rick/Billy era. I wish there had been more instead of just one very good album.

Ok,my turn...first off..i was a Mac fan..Rumours line-up..merely out of my curiosity of who the heck those people were on MTV and why did i know half their songs,lol...Rhiannon is the song that really stuck with me though...which made me gravitate towards Stevie..i remember i bought the Bella Donna cassette and played it so much it broke...and of course it just snowballed from there..Over the last year or so i have become much more of a Lindsey fan too...the man is a awesome

I was a Stevie Nicks fan first. Hey, I only started paying attention in 1981 when Bella Donna was all the rage. Then I got into Fleetwood Mac. With Go Insane, I became a bona fide Lindsey Buckingham fan. Later, I discovered Peter Green. So, to sum up, my order of fandom goes like so:

Since I've been a fan since the band began (and a Peter Green fan since before he FORMED Fleetwood Mac, so if there's a preference to any certain members, I guess he would be where it germinated from.), I've grown accustomed to personnel changes in the band named Fleetwood Mac. And, due to that, I don't really care WHO comprises the band, whether it was the original lineup, the Bob Welch era, the Rumours era, the Rick/Billy era, the Time lineup, or any lineup that would conceivably happen in the future should Buckingham and/or Nicks call it quits once again...I like Fleetwood Mac. They've never released an album I don't like (maybe the rare SONG here & there, but overall, I've liked every album).

Since we are all sharing, I will try to sum up my thoughts.

In 1997 I saw The Dance on MTV. Immediately following I saw the BTM special on VH1. I recognized some songs because my step-father at the time played Rumours or Fleetwood Mac or Tusk but he didn't very often and I wasn't always paying attention. So I was drawn in by the history the band had, more specifically, the history and chemistry between Stevie and Lindsey. At 1st I paid the most attention to Lindey because of his awesome guitar playing on stage. THEN I heard Stevie sing Rhiannon. That pulled me in.

Basically I was a Stevie fan with Fleetwood Mac. I didn't acknowledge her solo stuff at 1st. I paid a lot of attention to the lyrics of songs. I started really enjoying the music and wanted to find out a little more about Lindsey. I used the internet to find out everything that a fan would know about him. At that point I researched Stevie also. I started comparing notes beween the 2 of them and realized that they had such a romantical and musical history that I don't think anyone can compare with anyone else. It was soo cool that they were still playing together let alone talking. The interviews drew me in. I found the Penguin in 1997 and I bought a few videos from Marty and cassettes of live shows. I got into trading pretty heavy back in 97 and 98. It was really cool that I was able to "experience" Fleetwood Mac from the late 70's through the early 80's without actually being there. I felt really connected with Stevie mainly and Lindsey.

OK so 98 or so Stevie put out Enchanted which basically summed up her solo career. I bought it and went to my first Stevie Nicks concert. Because Enchanted was a reflection of all 5 solo projects of hers I was finally bringing myself into this new Stevie realm that I haven't paid much attention to before. I was blown away by the works of Bella Donna and The Wild Heart. I bought both and I bought TimeSpace, which I rarely listen to. At this point I became more of a Stevie fan.

Around 2000 I began trading again. Technology made it a lot easier for people to burn CDs so I started collected CDRs. I am a big nut for demos. I have heard probably 95% of the ones floating around.

You would say that I am a Stevie fan, in and out of Fleetwood Mac. I also say that I appreciate her contributions to the band a little more than her solo works. I adore what Lindsey can do for her songs, when he allows himself to. My alltime favorite Stevie song is from the band.

Since last year and the leaking of Lindsey's GOS demos I have began to appreciate Lindsey SO much more. I have always connected with him lyrically, especially from the FM album through Tusk. I didn't connect with him on Mirage onward. I hadn't paid a whole lot of attention to his solo works except for the song Go Insane and Trouble. So last year I run across some of his GOS songs as MP3s. Almost immediately my eyes opened. I didn't have to force myself to listen. I was pleasantly surprised. I am starting to REALLY like his uniqueness in the sound he makes. His compositions have are just excellant IMO.

To answer the ORIGINAL question, What kind of fan am I? I am a fan of B/N and all their solo works!!!

For me there is no connection between the name Fleetwood Mac and being a fan. I like a certain sound and a certain music and that is very much connected to what LB is doing with the band. So I don't care for the two albums after Lindseys departure.
I saw the TITN tour featuring R.Vito and B.Burnette. They did a good job there and are good musicians also but I had rather seen Lindsey live and it was lacking a certain spirit imo. And regarding the songwriting on BTM- I thought that their songs were uninteresting. (although this one was a little bit better than Time)
I became a fan back in 87 when I saw the freshly released video to Big love- liked the song initially and remember thinking "these people are looking old but that`s a great song- who are they?" (What will 18 year olds from today think seeing a band of mid50s people releasing an album called Say you will? Then I discovered by chance that Rumours was from the same band- a friend had bought it and we listened to it and were pretty enthusiastic about it and about that this band had also currently done TITN. Within a few weeks I got all the Rumours lineup albums and found them all great. Soon tusk was my favourite- immediately I was thrilled by the weird LB tracks. I also liked Stevie as a great counterpart to LB's songs. I think I like her voice more than her songwriting but she also provided really great ideas. Christines music is to me the the most contradictionary. She made fantastic pop songs like Hold me, Little lies and others. And then also provides the stuff that I dislike the most like Only over you for example. I never got into any of her songs on Tusk except of Think about me. Her songs do imo not fit into the concept of this album whereas Stevies songs are perfectly fitting there. But then again she made a big part on the two follow up albums. What was great- there were 3 totally different songwriters and voices sharing space on an album. Nearly any other band has one singer and mostly one songwriter. But the FM approach was somehow unique and Lindsey managed to get these different styles together in a certain typical sound.
I also checked out the preRumours thing. I think that the blues incarnation FM built a very good band with great musicians also. It`s just that Blues is not my kind of music so I`m not a fan of the Peter Green era. But it's different to the BTM and Time albums which imo are not good.
What I really liked was the Bob Welsh era especially on "Mystery to me" He provides a mystic and relaxed sound which is great. Unfortunately his 2 solo albums I bought were completely lacking that quality and spirit. They are totally different.
So my ranking would be

Lindsey solo and FM
Fleetwood Mac Rumours lineup and now
Stevie
Christine
Bob Welsh

For me overall it's Lindsey Buckingham then Peter Green and John McVie following closely but I have respect for all members past and present.

I'm a Stevie fan...but did try to resist for a long time...lol....I've told this story before...but here's what happened:

My sister bought a cd player when like they first came out, and only one cd....Fleetwood Mac's Greatest Hits...I was like 8, the only song I really liked was Little Lies, this song became what I associated Fleetwood Mac with always.....well fast forward to the late 90's and I'm in the back of my sister's car on the way to Albuquerque, and on comes Rhiannon....and I just fell in love...I went to her house that night, and after everyone was asleep I got out her old Greatest Hits cd, and Rumours...and just listened to them...the spell was cast lol...

The next day my sister was giving me a rundown on the band's history...and she said Stevie had a legion of "followers" and I was like..."well that's not gonna be me..." so I started getting into Christine McVie....and well...somewhere between that day and now...I just don't know what happened...because I just can't get enough of Stevie now... I do like them all...but solo wise, I prefer Stevie's stuff...

this must be my fifth or sixth incarnation of my story on the Ledge

basically, my dad purchased an 8-track stereo during the '70 and with it he purchase two 8-track tapes... FM Rumours and Linda Rondstadt...though even earlier than that I had taped Rhiannon and Dreams from the radio onto my cassette player (which I still have Dreams btw). Sentimental Lady and Ebony Eyes by Bob Welch were also radio favorites but I didn't connect him with FM...

but I really became a fan during High School when Bella Donna came out...here was this strong woman rocker who still maintained a feminine soft quality which appealed to me. I also really loved a pop tune playing on the radio called Trouble but at the time I did not connect the dots to realize it was Lindsey.

but FM and Stevie solo all began...the concerts, the albums, the videos both FM and Stevie solo and even Christine solo video was a favorite of mine on MTV. But the true obsession began in the mid-80s's with my hubby who was a huge Beatle fan. I saw that he was an obsessed fan so I decided to be an obsessed FM fan, I began collecting but it was really hard to find fan stuff...

but then in the mid-90's the Internet began and I first found the Nicksfix and then stumbed onto the Ledge. I lurked for a good two years before finally joining...but it really cemented my obsessed FM fan status. I'll always have a soft spot for Stevie, but I learned about and really do enjoy the early FM blues, Lindsey's solo stuff, and Bekka's solo stuff.

Who I first discovered within the realm of Fleetwood Mac during the Mirage era. I love Christine and Stevie's music also but that man just has me still interested after all these years!

Early Mac is cool as well, which I discovered back in 1985 after looking for earlier Mac recordings with Christine. Peter Green and Danny Kirwan are two other members I hold in high regards.

no Lindsey, Stevie or Chris album has turned me on as the mac albums do. And I mean the Rumours lineup.

Well, I became a fanatic in the summer of 1977. I was 12. I liked their songs but did not really know much about them. I heard Dreams on the radio a lot and that voice just got to me. I fell in love with it! My Mom used to read People magazine and there was a ad for Rumours in there. I thought that they looked like a bunch of interesting characters. There was also a newspaper that had the 10 LPs on one of the local radio stations and Rumours was always at #1.
I was just getting more and more intrigued with them. I really was intrigued by the voice of Dreams and the woman in the halter top in the ad, and the woman in the black 'witchy" outfit on the cover. I think it was the "witchy" outfit that just sealed it. I was into astrology and metaphysical things even at 12.
I got to find out a little more about them and I bought the Fleetwood Mac LP. Well I fell in love with it. I never had heard anything like it at the time. I did not have the $ to get Rumours yet so I would just go to the local dept. store and stare at it. Front and back.
I finally got Rumours in July of 1977 and that was it. I was head over heels in love with them. I found out that they were coming to the Providence Civic Center on July 7. I did not end up going because I was a bit to young at the time. The show was sold out and I had no idea how to get tickets. None of my friends liked them that much to go see them or had the $ to go. I sat home on a very hot night and cried.
Well needless to say I was crazy about Stevie. I did really like the rest of the band but I was obsessed to know all about Stevie.
She just has the whole package, the voice, the songs she writes, her look and image. I thought that she was unlike any other woman I had seen at the time. Very mystical, spirtual, and not to mention she had a very sensual and sexual vibe to her.
No I don't like Stevie in that way, not that there is anything wrong with that.
I have seen her many times but I also got to see Lindsey in Boston back in the early 90s. That was just a terrific show! It was in a small club and it was packed.
