Hmmm, this seems to belie the "Eagles are incredibly more successful than Fleetwood Mac at selling tickets" argument. The Eagles take in approximately $1.14 million per show, Fleetwood Mac approximately $1.06 million per show. Both of those round to $1.1 million.

Its easier to believe when you take a further look at the facts.

Eagles played two large festivals in 2008- the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, CA, and a huge festival in Moncton, NB- both of which they headlined and were attended by 50,000+. Neither of these gigs are factored into the oft-referenced Eagles '08 gross. They commanded in excess of $3M to headline each of these festivals, and its inarguable that their presence sold the bulk of these tickets.

The Stagecoach show was also the only Eagles show anywhere near the west coast for all of 2008 & 2009, and was marketed as such- intending to pull people from the surrounding states. Not that California is a big market for Eagles or anything.

The Mother of All Classic Rock Concert Tours
The Eagles will begin their Long Road out of Eden Tour at the Hollywood Bowl in, in a three-night run, April 16, 17 and 20.

It has been rumored that they would be touring with Fleetwood Mac. If the two bands did tour together it would be one heck of a concert.

According to Associated Content, rock and roll concerts have changed. There are really only a handful of acts, mostly older, at this point that can sell out large stadiums on their own. U2, Bruce Springsteen and maybe the Rolling Stones are the only bands that can still draw huge crowds.

During their heyday, both the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac could sell out stadiums on their own. Even today, both acts are among the most popular rock bands on the concert circuit. As they combine forces, however, they will be easily the most most in demand ticket of the summer.

Of course, the 300 pound gorilla in the room is the age of these bands and their fan bases. While both have fans across the age spectrum, the average age of each is well into the baby boomer range. It will be interesting, to say the least, to see sixty to seventy thousand greying (or greyed) baby boomers packing football stadiums rocking along one last time to the bands of their youth.

2 Both the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac are hitting the road this summer for moderately sized concert tours. Fleetwood Mac will soon announce a spring and summer tour and the Eagles will begin what is as of now a fourteen date mini-tour on April 16th at the Hollywood Bowl.
Earlier, it was widely rumored that they would actually tour together, but it now seems that that will not happen.

Given the bands' advanced ages and their relative lack of new music output, the upcoming tours would seem to possibly be final hurrah for two of the pillars of so-called dinosaur rock.

Right?

Well, nothing really ever is that predictable with these "frenemy" bands. As the band members have all now moved into their sixties, it would seem to be logical that they would soon be wrapping it up. Of course, the Eagles 'wrapped it up' back in the early 1980's and Fleetwood Mac did the same in the mid 1980's.

At various times, both bands, in one way or another swore that they would never tour again.

Don Henley famously once said that the Eagles would reform and tour when "hell freezes over." His bandmate and co-founder Glenn Frey chimed in, "There will be no greed and lost youth tour."

So, of course, the Eagles regrouped 1994 for a tour and live album both titled "Hell Freezes Over", to the delight of millions of mostly boomer era fans. Though the appeal of the Eagles has always crossed generations, their core fan base was still young enough, and now affluent enough, in the mid 1990's to make the tour the most lucrative of all time. So one more jaunt around the globe seemed to make sense as the boys still had their fastballs and a return to the smooth harmonies and musicianship was suddenly back in demand after punk, metal hair bands and grunge had run their respective courses. Not to mention, of course, that while Don Henley's solo career had taken off, the other band members found relatively little success.

While through the 1980's and into the 1990's it seemed exceedingly unlikely that the Eagles would ever get back together, what seems even more implausible is the fact that 16 years after hell froze over, they'd still be doing it. Even in 1994, there was a large segment of music snobs and critics who dismissed them as 'dinosaur rock' and old men cashing in on past glories. And yet the past 16 years has seen a smash hit album. While uneven and meeting with mixed reviews, Long Road Out of Eden, released in 2007, was one of the biggest selling albums of the year.

For their part, Fleetwood Mac has actually toured fairly consistently, though often with dramatically different lineups (at one point not even including their two signature members, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham). After failed intra band romances and all sorts of chemical dependency, they too reformed for real, following the Eagles' template, in 1997 and have mostly been together ever since...releasing an album of new material called The Dance, in 2003.

To both bands 'credit, neither has fooled their fans into thinking that the next tour would be their last. The Eagles even playfully named one of their tours "Farewell I"; the implication being that nobody knew, least of all the Eagles, as to how many 'final tours' they would eventually have.

Both the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac are both down a member: the Eagles Don Felder was fired in 2001 and Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie no longer tours with the band, preferring retirement in England. But the remaining members seem healthy and still sound great...even if some of Fleetwood Mac's performances in recent years have seemed to be just a bit less than their best ten or twelve years ago. But similar to an athlete aging gracefully, neither band is embarrassing itself on stage, and both remain huge concert draws, even if off just a bit from their peaks.

So while some may actually hope that these are the final tours for 'dinosaur rock bands', and while others may hope they keep defying father time, most all should probably agree at this point that predicting when these bands will finally hang it up for good is a fool's game.

Gosh, I really hope this doesn't happen. I don't want to NOT go to a Fleetwood Mac show- it would upset me, but this I won't attend.

Yeah..sounds like a last year article...though it would be nice if they did each tour again separately...

The latest we've heard from a friend who works for the Eagles is that the tour with FM is not being planned right now, but it's not completely off the table either.
