I don't think I've ever met any Ledgies!

I was meant to meet Jessica (from LindseyBuckingham.com) at the Buckingham show in Knoxville in 2007... I told her where I'd be sitting (with my brother on the 1st row) and then... nothing. I never saw a picture of her, so I had no idea what she looked like. Very strange.

maybe she was intimidated and couldn't do it. lol. I know we were supposed to meet up, but I never made it down.

I have never been a message board type of person or anything like that so I can't speak for other message boards, but I've never really been involved in any other type of group that had so many awesome people from all over the world and all walks of life. that's one thing that is so unique and special.

special, INDEED!

I just love Fleetwood Mac people. Like Jazmen said, they're from everywhere, and their personal lives, opinions, etc are all over the map. But there's a common respect among everybody. You just don't see that in other online communities. I've been a member of online communities for my DeLorean car longer than I've been on Fleetwood Mac boards. A good amount of those people are just downright hateful, nasty, thorn up their ass folks. Very intolerant of anybody who's not white, well to do, and Republican. Fleetwood Mac fans seem to revel in their diversity, and enjoy learning about one another's differences. While I've never met anyone here in person, I hope that'll change one day.

I have missed you, Jason. Glad to see you back. I thought of you recently when I saw the trailer for The Lovely Bones. Remember when we tried to start a Ledgie book club? Didn't you totally dislike that book? I adored it and I'm so excited about this movie.

Why don't we start a new Ledgie Book Club. I don't remember the last one. Was it like Book of the Month? Patricia Highsmith sort of stuff?

This is his latest, correct? what do you think of it? The Prince of Tides is a long time favorite of mine.

Are you recommending her work? She looks like an interesting character herself. I never know when you are being serious or facetious , David.

The Ledgie book club didn't take off, as I recall.

No! I've never even read that ****. I can't name a single title by her.

Usually, I think I am both simultaneously. But I am shifty & vague & even incommensurable, this is true. Bummer about the book club having never taken off (if we want to avoid what Fowler called the fused participle, we need to say "bummer about the book club's having never taken off").

If we started a new book club, could we read & talk about books from all times?

but it's not a participle, is it? it's a gerund acting as the object of preposition.

We would all have to agree on a book and then all read it at the same time. I would let you choose for a month, but I am afraid I would need MORE than a month to complete whatever you chose. And then I'd be afraid I wasn't smart enough to discuss it properly. Oh let's just forget the whole thing!

A participle can be used as a noun, which, as you have noted, is then called a gerund. Gerunds & participles aren't mutually exclusive forms: one is a functional subset of the other.

I side with Bryan Garner on the question of fused participles: The possessive ought to be used when the result is not unidiomatic or unnatural, but Fowler overstated his case by allowing no exceptions.

Garner cites the following as a defensible exception:

The chance of that ever happening is slight.

If it were your birthday, Carrie, I'd buy you a paperback copy of Garner's "Dictionary of American Usage & Style," & we could start a bunch of really cool threads about it in Chit Chat.

Balderdash. I would pick easy-to-read, fun books. If I could pick the first two books, I'd pick:

Mark Twain, "Pudd'nhead Wilson"
Henry Adams, "Democracy"

Both comic novels & both very short. Both authors supreme verbal technicians & first-rate artists in the American pantheon.

fowler has a habit of overstating.
