It makes my heart break to see Stevie like this. People often complain on many things about her, but we are very lucky to still have her around.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" to SortaSavageLike for posting this picture:

Photobucket

I bought the lace top Stevie is wearing in this picture from It's Only Rock and Roll memorabilia brokers some years back when they auctioned off a whole bunch of Stevie's concert outfits. How I wished I were a millionaire at that time! I've only come across one other picture of her wearing this top. This picture is far better.

Early on someone posted the picture of Stevie and Mick, that is from the Mirage tour. There's video somewhere from the Mirage tour of Stevie putting that monkey on the drum set. It's from the same video as the Mirage tour video, but from one of the songs that was cut??
Also someone mentioned that one of the photos looks like it was from the I Can't Wait video from early '85. The videos for "Talk To Me" and "I Can't Wait" were shot at the end of 1985 about a week apart. The video for TTM premiered right around Christmas. ICW came later on. I taped the premiere of the video when it aired on MTV and Mark Goodman goes on to say "There you have the new one from Stevie Nicks. Talk To Me already a top ten hit for Stevie as well it should be." Then he goes to say something about the production of the song, saying he thinks he hears a glockenspiel on the track and that the song sounds like a Phil Spector wall of sound production. He ends by saying "Stevie does plan to tour for Rock A Little sometime in the sprint, so keep it here for dates."
For some reason people think she toured in '85 for the album, she didn't. The tour began around March of '86.

^The RAL vocals were killer! If she hadn't been in such a bad way...and so close to something awful happening...I would absolutely adore this time period. Musically speaking, it was AMAZING!

It's Only R&R is a consignment place and the tag on the blouse had an inventory number on it that started with KOZ, which made me wonder if she gave the blouse to Dave Koz or his wife and they consigned it to It's Only R&R. "They" do that a lot, give their stage worn clothing to people as gifts. What I really wanted was that blue and green burn out velvet paisly skirt and blouse outfit they had for sale from the Tango/Rock the Cage tour, but it was $4,000 or $5,000. I'm not that rich! But, yeah... I want one of those skirts too!

Wonder who was doing Stevie's make up for some of the RAL shows. The hat photos... make up isn't very flattering. I'm glad she didn't stick with that look for long.

People don't believe me, either, when I say that the only way I'd go see her again in concert is if she would start snorting blow again. That would be the only way I'd feel that I'd get my money's worth.

But, Pete, i still feel that her greatest live vocals (solo) were in 1983, not 1986 (however fine those were). I think '83 was a tour with more coke consumed than in '86, which seems to have been primarily alcohol. Hence the changes in the face.

If she ever did such things, I'm sure that's what's happened. Is this the outfit you're talking about from TITN tour? I thought this one went to one of the Hard Rock's? I absolutely LOVE this outfit!

The coke fueled years brought out some of her most fiery performances but it was killing her.

Some of Stevie's WORST vocals were on the RAL tour. The radio broadcast of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" with Peter Frampton from New York is horrible. She just sort of slurs her way thru. There are several boots from the RAL tour where she's slurring rather than singing. The Wild Heart tour has some great stuff, things hadn't gotten too far out of control yet.
She was still very much doing coke on the RAL tour, she has said in interviews that she knew she wouldn't be able to get thru the tour without it, so she limited herself. At the show I saw in Hartford in '86 she was wiping her nose an awful lot in between songs. Right after the tour she checked herself into Betty Ford.

But that's what Pete & I liked about it. We consider that slurring aesthetically superior to singing (like today). As strandinthewind once told me, the violent & corrosive bowing of the strings in Beethoven's Grosse Fuge is aesthetically preferable to the traditional formalism of technique required in Haydn's early quartets.

In 1983, the cocaine made Stevie hypomanic: grandiose, flights-of-ideas, press-of-speech, giddy.

By 1986 on tour, the cocaine effect was dulled or dampened, possibly by a lot of alcohol, which is a depressant on the central nervous system. I think I also attribute Stevie's weight gain in late 1985 & throughout 1986 to "alcohol bloat" & increased caloric consumption.

I think what I hear in the '86 shows is more alcohol too, now that I think of it. But, I think lines of coke were keeping her "up" instead of the alcohol drag that happens as it hits the CNS. So she was a combo of drunk and wired. You are right, her press and on stage banter from '83 is much different (like the uncomfortable and odd story she blabbed on stage about The Beast getting "totally bummed out" by Beauty, for example)

I usually go to just one show a tour these days, though I did skip the tour she did a few years back with the unicorn backdrop and Cocteau BATB footage (can't remember the name of the tour). If I were to read other people's reviews of contemporary shows and they said "OMG, she was like Reagan from The Exorcist, her head flipped around and she was using a babbling, bellowy, barky voice to croak out the lyrics she could remember. She scared me", man I would RUN to get tickets.

Need to correct myself.. it was the Shake the Cage tour, not Rock the Cage.
Anywho... yes, that IS the outfit. It very well may have gone to Hard Rock. Guess I can take a vacation and visit the outfit that almost was. Boy did I do a lot of talking myself out of that. Even to the point of trying to convince myself it was unattractive. HA! Heck, I was going to take a loan out. Yea... I very much love that outfit too! It looks even more beautiful in this picture than any other I've ever seen of it. Thanks for posting it. I had my lace blouse framed a la Hard Rock in the rare event I should ever want to part with it, figuring they might want to buy it. Had to deframe it because the lace was so fragile it was stretching. Wish I could talk Hard Rock into trading.

I would think something like that outfit would go to a place like RRHOF or Hard Rock, than someplace else or for sale. It's a beautiful outfit and something I would still wear today. Like many of her clothes, it's timeless Stevie.
