Default Rock chick Stevie

Ok...wev'e had a bit of a giggle over Lindseys hairy/non hairy chest, how about a Stevie related ( NOT her chest!) thread
I'm not a Stevie fan as such, but she seemed to me, to be the absolute epitomy of what a rock chick should look like ( certainly back in the 70's)...you know blonde, petite, big eyes, big hair, angelic looking face...need I go on? I'm sure some of you out there could say more than I can so... go for it!

oh, and lets not debate the weight thing AGAIN!

My first impressions of Stevie weren't so much about how she looked, although admittedly, she was really the most beautiful woman in Rock & Roll at that time, but it came not so much from her clothes and such. Like I said in another thread, in the 70's everybody wore shawls and shags, and incense and candles were hip acessories in practically every home.

So, I have to say that what makes her the perfect rock chick was her abiltiy to turn a phrase like no one else. Her lyrics were mystical and wispy, and they were performed with such emotion and reflection. They reached out of the grooves in the vinyl and grabbed my attention.

All I really had to go on for what she looked like for a number of years were album covers. I wasn't allowed to buy Rolling Stone and Creem magazine. My parents would have had horrors if I did that, and with no MTV in those days, all I had were the albums.
In a way that is good because it really let the music speak for itself, and I could form my own opinions.

Stevie's image and mystique have grown over the years because she never really let go of the 70's. She hung on to her shawls and platforms long after they were out of style, and she has never gotten rid of her lava lamps. I remember seeing the Seven Wonders video when I was in college, and I cringed at the sight of those platform boots! lol! "She's still wearing those? UGH!" I cried. I just didn't get it at the time.

I admire her now for being true to that spirit even when it wasn't cool like it is now. She still has that hippie-chick free spirit persona and I love it.

Watch, once this retro 70's trend is out Stevie will still be doing it just like always. Once everyone has gone on to the next trend, which I fear will be 80's big hair, she will still "go her own way."

Now that's a rock chick!

Thank You Sulamith - I could not agree more!!!!!

For me - it was when my older brother brought home Rumors in 1977 and I saw the cover and back photos. Then, I realized she was the one who sang Rhiannon. I was about 10 or 11 at the time, so I really did not know too much!!!
But, I knew enough to know she was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Then came Tusk and Bella Donna and I thought again, she is the coolest chick I have ever seen and what a voice - what words. She has changed over the years (who hasn't ), but she still has that mother earth\hippie chick\glamour goddess\Rhiannon thing going on 30 yeas later and she can still belt it like no on else (See GDW scream on The Dance if you do not know what I mean!!). What a woman!

Hey Sarah, I think you're right, the 80's big hair will come back around as well but Stevie also had very high hair in the 80's!! plus I kinda miss big hair, it was much easier to take care of, perm it, blow it and off you gooo!!

I find it interesting how people and even Stevie herself says that her style has stayed the same over the years because I personally think she looks and sounds kind of different each time she releases an album be it solo or FM. She may have kept some basic things like platform boots and the chiffon and lace but she does mix it up with different hats, skirts, hair, makeup, the use of color (red, black and white).

but in the end for me, it's always been her music and lyrics. It kept me a fan during the lean years. Like Stevie herself has paraphrased herself "looks can get you famous but you need talent to stay there"

stevie, rockin' a little during the 80's

That's a great picture. Is that Mask/Timespace era? What a career our girl has had.

That photo of Stevie is rank! The 1980's didn't do anyone any fashion favours, least of all Stevie. The few times she has made concessions to contemporary style over the years, it has always ended in disaster. Think back to the teased, permed, over-processed hair, shoulder pads, clunky belts, bracelets and earrings - tacky!!! If she doesn't straighten that hair quick smart, I swear I'm gonna hold her down and give her a no.1 buzz cut!

Would you care to post a picture of yourself circa 1989-90?

I thought the same thing!!
Very odd. What in the world was up with THAT!!?? I wonder what was wrong with her. She definitely didn't seem like her usual self in interviews. I've heard some people speculate about it. I guess it was done right around the time that Howie Epstein from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers passed away, people were thinking maybe she was sad about that. I really don't know.

Side note: I was totally shocked to find MY screenname was the first one mentioned and the first question that they talked about!! LMAO!! I hadn't had a chance to listen to that interview until tonight. Boy was I amazed. I'm sorry I didn't know ahead of time--I would have thrown a REAL good question out there to them. My questions never get chosen and answered! Go figure!

Stevie did change her style toward the latter part of the 1980's, but besides the big hair, she never seemed 80's to me at all, which is why I think she kind of lost some popularity then. Her dressing didn't resemble her older style, but it was a more glamour-mystic-princess type of thing. Overall though, she didn't change too much. It's really kind of strange because now everyone praises her for keeping the same style throughout the years, whereas Madonna made her career and people praise her for constantly reinventing herself and her sound and style.

As for someone's post about WHEN the 70's style comes back...umm, it's pretty much already back. I work in a "trendy" style retail store, and we keep getting things that were popular in the 70's. The biggest thing that even the older shoppers and my mom can't believe is how "flares" are in. Flares are basically just a more relaxed version of bell bottoms, and they start getting bigger toward the ankle starting about midway down the lower leg rather than right at the knee, but they resemble bell bottoms. Also we've had peasant tops for about a year now, and we constantly see fashion articles on Nicksfix about styles that are in as "Stevie-like." It seems Lindsey's cycle idea is true with fashion...and when the 70's style goes back out, the 80's are up, lol. I think it'd be hysterical to have 80's fashion (although refined like this new 70's fashion) come back.

Are you talking about me as far as "when"?
Becaue that is what i was saying, that it is here now, and when it goes, Stevie will still be 70's. I wasn't saying the 70's trend was coming.
