What's your LEAST favorite Stevie album, and why?

I was just going to say, she became a caricature of ''Stevie Nicks'' in the late 80s, you beat me to that point.

OSOTM is my least favourite for that reason, it seems like a forced effort to be current, to me.

I really doubt this. I'm sure she said it once, but she ignores the songs on it during live shows, and talks way better about Bella Donna and TISL.

She has said it tons and tons of times. Even to quote what someone said earlier about her father saying it was the worst album shes ever done, right after that she said, "but it happens to be my favorite." Of course this was before TISL, but even in 2007 she said in an interview that she wrote all the songs for OSOTM before she was on Klonopin and loved the way they turned out and STILL DID.

Yeah, well then I would like to ask her how she managed to write the lyrics and melodies to the music tracks that were written by Rupert Hine, whom she didn't meet until just before recording the album, while she was on Klonopin.

I just remember how shockingly "out-of-place" musically this album was when it came out in 1989. When RAL came out, yeah, it was full of cheesey loud synths, but as bad as that was, at least it fit into what was going on in the music world at the time. OSOTM wasn't even close to what was happening musically at the time. By 1989, no rock artists were using those soft, layered synths that resembeled elevator music (think of other albums that came out that summer like those from U2 and Tom Petty). That "sound" was really only used by the Michael Bolton/Mariah Carey "easy-listening" types, and even that was a couple of years earlier. I remember thinking sarcastically that maybe the album was actually recorded two years earlier and that now maybe Stevie thought she was Whitney Houston or something. Remember, nobody knew that she was on Klonopin at the time; we didn't know that until years later. I was devestated to think that Stevie seemed to be migrating toward "easy-listening queen" and away from "the queen of rock and roll". The only songs that didn't seem to be that way were "Whole Lotta Trouble" and "Doing The Best I Can", and to this day, these are the only songs I like from OSOTM.

I was a fan (started being one in late 1983) but no, I wasn't shocked in the least, in fact, I recall first hearing ROF on the radio and I had this big smile on my face. I know Stevie said that she let the mystic thing go on this record but I don't hear or get that at all - if it's her "magic" album wouldn't that be somewhat mystical? In any event, depsite it had more synths than her previous albums, it sounded every bit a Stevie Nicks record to me. I love it to this day and I find it to be the best sequenced of all her albums.

I was only shocked because I had no idea she had even recorded an album! In May,1989 a friend asked me if I heard the new Stevie Nicks single being played on the radio. I told her there was no new single. She said there is. So I called the radio station and they confirmed it. I heard Rooms on Fire for the first time at night looking out the window at a full moon in the sky. I loved the song from first listen and I love it to this day. I absolutely love the album. I often rank on Two Kinds of Life but even that song has some good points to it.

I love ROF too. I like Fire Burning as welll. I don't think those songs are any less magical than the ones on Wild Heart.

My least favorite has to be The Soundstage Sessions. I like all of Stevie's albums and the only one that I never really get in the mood to listen to is Soundstage. My problem with Soundstage is that it has been advertised as Stevie's "new album" which I don't think is an accurate description. And don't get me wrong, I like the cd, and I think it has some great stuff of on it, but I feel it is just lacking. It only has 10 songs on it and I think they could have thrown in several others from the DVD. Also, I feel that Stevie has so many amazing songs she could have done for this that she didn't, and it's sad. Why did she not do Outside the Rain or Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You? Or Bella Donna, The Highwayman, Doing the Best I Can, Alice, Nightbird, Angel, Trouble In Shangri-La?? I would kill for those on a live CD. I think she could have made this really amazing. And I know its not a standalone album really, but I always find myself listening to one of her albums, including her greatest hits, and I can't help but think "Wow, I forgot how amazing this was" but I never get that feeling with Soundstage.

Least favorite album: Mirror. I don't think the songs are bad -- I don't think most of the songs on any of her albums are bad. But I don't like the vocals she laid down. Her voice doesn't sound good to me when she strips it of her trademark warble. Her early '80s albums were always favorites of mine because she warbled all over the scale. She had such elasticity, too, taking big leaps with intervals & creating a much wider range in dynamics -- all attributable to youth, I suppose.

I have just about nothing good to say of the album's engineering or orchestrations, except that Hornsby's acoustic piano on one of the tracks at least gets my foot tapping (the way that Roy Bittan did on Gold & Braid). I'm particularly irked by the way the drums were recorded throughout -- with virtually no bottom end. The whole album leaves me panting for a Mick Fleetwood kick drum sound, deep & full & satisfying.

Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You? - played every tour from 85 - 01 until it was replaced by "Beauty And The Beast" in Las Vegas 2005.
Bella Donna - last played Bella Donna Tour 1981
The Highwayman - Never played
Doing The Best I Can - played once on a TV interview, never played on tour
Alice - last played Other Side Of The Mirror tour 1989
Nightbird - performed live twice, both TV appearances, never played on tour
Angel - last played at US Fest in 1983
Trouble In Shangri-La - Played accapella as an opening song on TISL tour, but was a recording, not live and only a few lines.

I'd love to see Stevie pull some of these tracks out of the wood work, but I doubt it will happen. I'd really like to see Talk To Me, WLT, Rooms On Fire, Blue Denim, No Spoken Word, Think About It and Loves A Hard Game To Play all put back in the set, but I highly doubt they will.

Out of the soundstage songs, I really wish "Gold Dust Woman" was on the CD, because I think it was her best in YEARS. I'm glad "Sara" made it on though, and "Stand Back" is totally rockin! Love the new version of "How Still My Love" too but it goes on and on and on and on and on and on and zzzzzzzzzzzz fallen asleep.....
