Fleetwood Mac – 02, Dublin
By Lisa Hughes on Monday, 26 October 2009 Ah, the reunion tour – the cash cow that never loses its value. And, based on tonight’s evidence, we can’t say no to them. After all, in the midst of a recession the O2 is packed to the gills with punters, most of whom paid more than a pretty penny to be there. Adding to the long string of comeback gigs to grace these shores in recent years, Fleetwood Mac joined the ranks with a two night stint at the O2. With their last comeback tour somewhat immortalised as a piece of rock history, Mick Fleetwood pulled the original Rumours contingent together for the Unleashed 2009 World Tour (minus Christine McVie of course, who apparently declined the offer). With no support act lined up and the stage clothed in darkness, all elements were in place for the crowd to nervously anticipate the show to come and as each band member took their place to kick things off with ‘Monday Morning’ the nervous tension peaked. Once the surreal sensation of seeing the Mac in the flesh wore off, it became clear that there was something of a sing-off taking place before us, with FM’s legendary rivalries surfacing. For a significant handful of songs, Nicks and Buckingham split vocal duties, with both guilty of hamming things up in an effort to own the show. As the tassled and shawled Stevie Nicks tottered around the stage in semi-slow motion in 4 inch heels, she almost managed to rekindle her 70s cool yet, despite the earlier murmurs of the crowd ahead of her entrance. Buckingham however was the undisputed show stealer. With his guitar-wielding swagger and powerful solos, the guitarist’s onstage presence, particularly on moments like ‘Big Love’, made him dominate the performance. Meanwhile, Stevie’s vocals remain top-notch (‘Landslide’ affirmed this), so distinctive that even when she occasionally dropped the ball, it only endeared her further. Let’s not forget the presence of Mick Fleetwood either, whose steady efforts belting away on the drums underpinned the entire performance. Although he looked physically sidelined by the two most famous band members, half of the group’s namesake was certainly not forgotten, as the huge cheer he garnered at the end rightfully displayed. Things were hammed up further with the sermon-like intervals where Nicks and Buckingham digressed on the band’s often troubled history, attempting to add to the symbolism of the event by harking back to their well-versed dramas. Admittedly it was a tactic that worked, reminding us of the rarity of the occasion by reiterating the group’s stature and legendary status, regardless of how wholly theatrical it felt. When the clash of egos died down (or became less apparent), things instead centred on the music as the setlist hit all the expected high points and was a solid blend of well-known numbers. From the thundering outro of ‘The Chain’ to the note-perfect rendition of ‘Dreams’ through to the bluesy ‘Gold Dust Woman’, musically the band managed to pull it all together as though they’ve been doing this untroubled without a break since 1977. For a reunion tour there was no sense of the band phoning in their performance and, occasional cheese-factors aside, there was a very real sense that, despite Mick Fleetwood’s call of “Until next time”, this could be the last we see of Fleetwood Mac and that made it an occasion to savour. Tonight’s show lacked that certain something to make it a truly unforgettable night, (perhaps due to the obvious impersonal nature of a mammoth venue like the O2) but on the whole it was an impeccable performance hard to fault and one you couldn’t help but feel privileged to witness. http://www.state.ie/2009/10/live/fle...mac-02-dublin/

Oh Lord ... I don't even know where to begin! I'm still buzzing.
Madness Fades: This man is, as we say, a legend  You and Michelle were so good to me and I couldn't be happier that you finally succeeded in getting that beauty signed. I hope the pic of us turned out well! LikeAMagnet: I'm so delighted you got to the show in the end  You were an absolute joy to spend the evening with and thank you so much, forever and ever, for getting us to the front. I owe you big time! As for a 'review' ... quite simply the best weekend of my life. I could gush at length (and might yet) but I'll do my best to pick just the highlights: - Lindsey Lindsey Lindsey. I don't need to tell anyone here how wonderful his voice and his playing were, but more than that, he was so generous to the crowd. I particularly noticed this on Sunday night, when I was standing right in front of his microphone (pinch me I'm dreaming). He was interacting all the time, smiling, pointing, laughing or just making eye contact. Looking straight into those incredible eyes with them looking back into mine? Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would happen to me but it did, over and over and over again. The biggest kick I ever got.  - I fluctuate between being a Stevie girl and a Lindsey girl, but this weekend I was all Lindsey. He was so charismatic and gave so much to the fans in the front; I just couldn't take my eyes off him. That's not to say, of course, that Stevie was a disappointment -- she definitely wasn't. She looked gorgeous, just as beautiful in the flesh as in the pictures, and sounded even better. Her voice is in great shape and on Saturday night she was putting everything into it. There was definitely something amiss on Sunday night, a kind of sadness or heavy-heartedness about her. Whatever it was, I hope she's doing better now. - Best song on both nights for me was I Know I'm Not Wrong. Halfway through it on the second night I realised that I was right at Lindsey's feet, listening to the number one song of the night and that I had two more hours of this pure bliss to look forward to... it was ecstasy. I just felt like crying...! - I was going to pick other standout songs, but by the time I did I realised every second song was on my list, so I won't! ... But I MUST mention Go Insane. The new treatment is incredible and Lindsey gives it so much. The last thirty seconds with the deep, rumbling bass/synth (I'm not sure what it is) are so intense, they just grab you and don't let go until it cuts out. Incredible. - I thought the crowd were much more into it on Sunday night. Mick seemed to really appreciate us chanting his name Where else would I find people who understand how I'm feeling? Even now I'm still high from it and I never ever want to forget it. Better than a dream come true. I am so, so happy. I still can't believe it happened..... Aaaaaaghh.

I completely agree with you Sahara!... it was an amazing weekend!... and Lindsey was by far the most interactive for the gigs!... I was amazed by how upbeat and excited he was!... He was pumping with energy and more than willing to share it!...
It was easily the best weekend of my life too!... between seeing both nights, and then Peter Green on Monday, I don't think anything could top this weekend ever!

It would also be a fantastic Rolling Stone magazine photo, or their best official Fleetwood Mac tour-shirt. I just think it's a phenominal photo, because... - it's a dimension of Fleetwood Mac captured in a photograph that you don't see very often- FUN! My, my, you captured 'we're having fun' as I've never seen, ever, with those four. I think if SN ever sees that photo, she will say to herself 'well, I won't be able to say I didn't have a good time on the Unleashed Tour- there's proof!' The photo strikes me as very, very 'Wizard of Oz'... I somehow see Stevie as the cowardly lion in the shot, while LB has that vulnerable Dorothy-esque gaze going on. Now, who ever would get to sing lead on 'If I Only Had A Brain'?? Though, to me, it looks like Stevie is singing a little, silly, happy song to herself, possibly even 'because, because, because, because, because'...' Gosh, don't I know how to spell phenominal? Why is it underlined in red, twice now? Well, it's just the best photo of Fleetwood Mac I have seen in eons. So very, very nicely done. They should hire you!
