This was the first song of Stevie's solo work I ever heard, even before Edge of Seventeen, etc. I loved it instantly, and it was part of the reason I decided to explore Fleetwood Mac and Stevie's back catalogue further.

I was in the record store on the day Bella Donna was released and of course they were playing the album and Bella Donna was the song they were playing as I walked in ..I thought this is a great song .I was already beside myself with excitement having been a fan for several years and anxiously awaiting the albums release,Plus I heard Edge on the radio right before leaving my house and was totally blown away.

One thing I'd like to mention - -

I've always felt that the title "Bella Donna" intentionally has a triple meaning:

1.) Beautiful Woman.

2.) An addictive drug.

3.) A deadly poison.

And yes, I DO think that Stevie is that smart. . . .

Thank you, Ghost Tracker, for being so very insightful and complimentary to Stevie. I have always thought she was smart....smart enough to be the single most successful solo artist to come out of Fleetwood Mac!!!

Of course she's that smart! I love that post. As I said when I started this thred, the multiple meanings of the song are clear (to me anyway) and it's one of the reasons I love it!

When you put it that way, I think Landslide. Climb a mountain, turn around. See my reflection . . .

RIGHT ON!!! i always figured it was about 1 & 3 for sure.
kinda like how the plant/flower has a pretty name that is deceptive
so Stevie uses all 2 or 3 of these ideas interchangeably.
genius!

i love the whole song
but my fave line is

"But the woman is so tired...so the woman disappears..."

if this was written later i would say she was very defeated and she would just up and leave the lifestyle. but she could have meant disappears into drugs... hmm "looks for escapism"
