I know people love to make comments about how ****ed up Stevie looks/sounds in every interview and performance from this period and I think they're usually dead wrong, but I think this interview is one of the rare instances where it can pretty legitimately be said that she's just cracked out. She looks amazing and sounds basically coherent, but her tense, almost paranoid, facial expressions, the way she moves her mouth and keeps looking down and away from the interviewer/camera and the general low-grade anxiety and defensiveness and her inability or lack of interest in picking up the threads the interviewer is feeding her — not to mention the fact that she says she's been "up for days" — it all signals coke bender to me.
Stevie is always intense and serious in interviews, but she's usually passionate, thoughtful and creative. She's really flatlining here. |

Thank you EnchantedKiwi for this video. I had never seen it and I love her talking about her art, very refreshing and I love to hear her voice.

I think it's always funny that someone has to give all these reason why stevie MUST be high whenever a video was posted. They site examples on her face, words, look, socks. But really it was 1984 - of course she was high! You don't have to tell us, it's just assumed.

I think you're right. This interview reminds me a lot of the other MTV video she did with Mark Goodman promoting the WH which I'm guessing was in '83 sometime. She did look/sound a bit different later in the RAL period.

Also, the poster of the youtube video reports the interview was recorded on August 11, 1985. |

MTV aired parts of this same interview in 1984. I think I still have my old VHS with those parts on it. It had bits of Cyndi Lauper, Annie Lennox, & Stevie Nicks. Nicks says that Prince borrowed some of Stevie's ideas for stage clothes for his own act.

She didn't even know anything about a single yet. Jimmy Iovine is still working with her. She still doesn't know when the album is coming out. These three things can't be going on 3 months before the album was released. edit: and as David says, he saw the video itself in 1984. |

(especially the Money Changes Everything video with the trash can bit) Pretty cool, since Stevie was considered a seasoned star by that time, where Cyndi was just hitting the big time. |
