Default Timespace Tour Stories

Here is the Timespace Tour Stories thread! If you went to see Stevie on this very short 23 date tour, share your stories here! To start off, when and where did you see her? And anything else you can remember from that night.

Stevie had a lot of different band mates for this one, compared to previous tours. I wonder why? Arrangements were changed for some of the songs...I don't know much about this small tour, so please tell us your memories.

Well this was the year I moved to Phoenix so I was sure to see her when she came to perform. But she never played Phoenix so it was the only time between 1979 and now that I didn't see her live, with the exception of the Bella Donna Tour, because she never came to the Northeast.

I don't have any juicy stories of my visit with Big Mama & Her Obnoxiously Loud Band that year. But I do remember thinking that it was really weird she was on tour & there was no new album out. Not even Timespace had been released yet, & nobody knew anything about it. I just figured Stevie had decided to do a greatest hits tour.

I saw the gigs at Concord & Mountain View. I was really disheartened by this time about the whole scene & the direction in which she was going. I thought it was all so ridiculous, & the fans were getting annoying, too -- many of them were insane, I felt. After each tour stop, they'd send in their reviews to the fanzines & rave about how beautifully this zonked-out lethargic woman was singing, & I felt more estranged than ever from their views. (Dozens of them continually raved about how this was the best Stevie had ever been.) I felt that a particular type of weirdo -- unable to hear, unable to see, & unable to formulate a coherent thought -- had co-opted the whole fan base.

At Concord, which came first in that region of California, I wondered why Lori wasn't performing. Stevie didn't say anything about it until Mountain View, when she told us Lori was pregnant.

Stevie had a great saxophone player on this tour. He was the one cool musician in the whole band. He wailed on If Anyone Falls.

The next solo tour, in 1994, partially reinvigorated Stevie for me. I was so relieved to hear pitch, timbre, & most of all vibrato again.

I knew about Timespace in September of 1991 when I heard Sometimes it's a Bitch on the radio. Then I bought the cassette single and played and totally loved Desert Angel. Especially because I was new to Phoenix that year and was familiar with Camelback Mountain and Paradise Valley, both of which are mentioned in this song Desert Angel.
When you've seen the places written in a song it takes on an even more meaningful feeling.
David how can you say no one was aware of this record? What month did you see her in concert? I don't know why I'm asking, you probably won't answer me anyway...

Just around the corner from Stevie's former Paradise Valley home is a street called White Winged Way. And a few miles from there is a street called Gold Dust Blvd. JTIS

She toured before the album came out. The tour went from the middle of July to the middle of August. The audiences had no idea there was going to be a greatest-hits album called Timespace until they saw the ad in the tour program.

From USA Today, 11/11/1991

Hear Stevie Nicks perform ... her first club date Thursday at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST on Entertainment Radio Network. Nicks' private show at the Whiskey a Go-Go in L.A. coincides with the release of her single 'Love's a Hard Game to Play.'

From a Los Angeles Times article dated August 10, 1991 called Rock Ain't Rollin', Prices Up, Attendance Down Nationwide

"The industry is choking on greed," said Carl Freed, executive director of the New York-based North American Concert Promoters Assn., which represents most of the nation's major promoters. "From the band to the concessionaire, everybody seems to be out for themselves."

Industry observers also cite the current absence of top-name concert draws such as Madonna as a point of concern. Still, most are at a loss to explain why such pop stars as Whitney Houston and Stevie Nicks have been unable to attract more than marginal crowds at numerous stops on their national tours. (Nicks is slated to play Irvine Meadows Aug. 18; Jabobs said sales for the date are "OK... very few people are doing great business this summer.")

From the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, July 5, 1991:

Stevie Nicks has just announced a summer tour in advance of a greatest hits album due in September. Nicks` Whole Lotta Trouble Tour begins in Houston next week and runs through mid-August

Those of us attending shows in Northern CA probably didn't pick up a copy of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel beforehand.

Now Bill Gamelson apparently camp-followed this tour, so he (& guys like him) probably knew about an upcoming album.

Well this show was incredibly special for me because it was after this show (In Philly) that I got to meet Stevie. The show itself was pretty good...the crowd was really into it and it was definitely one of the better performances from the klonopin era. She was engaged, energetic and seemed to enjoying herself. Yes, her singing was flat but that's kinda a given between '89 and '91. The band sounded great and "filled in" for what Stevie was lacking during that time. I have this show on VHS and always watch it with very fond memories.

And I knew nothing. When I was in college, I kept up on the music news. I'd haunt the many record stores looking at the press releases they received and bought all the magazines. But once I graduated and started working, I lost touch with all of that and there was no internet to help me stay connected. I knew only what I heard from other people.

And you're not going to tell us your story of meeting Stevie?

Well, if you insist! I didn't include it because I think I"ve probably posted it before and didn't want to bore anyone. I was on pins and needles during the last two songs, waiting for the "cue". I didn't really believe it was really going to happen. We were ushered backstage into a hallway with a bunch of people. I was still skeptical (always the optimist LOL). So shortly after we were led into the green room. This about when the surrealism began. We walked in and there's Stevie sitting on the couch chating with a few folks. As soon as we walked in she stopped talking and just stared at us...I say us, I think it was me but I can't be sure. It felt like she was staring right at me, in an eerie, wonderful way. We sat down with her and she spent most of the time talking about how she had a throat problem and she really should be in bed resting, not singing with smoke blowing in her face. She was really quite manic and seemed very unsure about her performance, asking us if she sounded OK. She was wearing this horrible red print smock, black tights and red, suede platform sandals. I was the last one to say goodbye. I thanked her for spending time with us and she took my hand in both of hers and thanked me. I will never forget the expression on her face. She had the exact same look on her face when she said goodnight to the crowd at the end of the last night of the Bella Donna tour (the HBO special). I walked away and felt like I just may pass out. Thankfully, I managed to stay upright! I would post the picture but I don't have a scanner.
