Default Inspiration for Second Hand News?

This is a long shot but I've always had the feeling that Lindsey got some of his inspiration for the Second Hand News melody from the Lone Ranger theme/William Tell Overture...

He has mentioned Jive Talking by the Bee Gees as giving him ideas in SHN.

Do you mean inspiration from strictly a musical standpoint or lyrically?

Yes, Lindsey had said that the Bee Gee's "Jive Talkin'" was the musical inspiration. The shuffle of the drums is very similar between the two. As a side note, the opening of "Jive Talkin'" was inspired while driving in a car with a flat tire. The thumping of the tire was recreated in the studio.

He talked about taking "textures" from Jive Talking, whatever that means.

Any guess what 'lay me down in the tall grass and let me do my stuff" might mean? I have two ideas. A rather mysterious lyric, or, if not, one certainly open to interpratation

When I saw the title of the thread, I was just going to answer in one word. "sex"

He sampled a sound from that song for a layer of sound. I doubt "Jive Taking" was the inspiration for writing the song itself, however. He also said he imagined it as a Scottish march. Maybe some folk music?

I listened to Jive Talkin' on YouTube. The only similarity I hear between that & Second Hand News is the rhythm guitar doing the chocka-chocka in that martial style.

But a million songs do that, too. I think Lindsey just thought Jive Talkin' had a great hook.

I think an even bigger influence on Second Hand News was the earlier album's Monday Morning: both the idea of leading off the new album with a galloping rock track in a major key & the military roll of the drumming.

[Thought this was humorous. I knew I shouldn't wear white after Labor Day, but didn't know about this]

Redeye Chicago
http://dating.redeyechicago.com/date...fter-labor-day

There's certain things you can get away with in the crazy, lazy, hazy days of summer that simply aren't going to fly when the leaves start falling. Ever notice how there's no such thing as an Autumn fling? That's because the fall weather is nippy and it's your LAST CHANCE TO FIND SOMEONE TO SUFFER THROUGH THE WINTER WITH. It's time to get your head on straight and stop screwing around.

Here are 13 kinds of sex you can't have after Labor Day. Best to check them all off your list this week.

1. Drunken Sex With A Stranger You Met At A Barbecue Before 4pm
2. Mostly Concealed Rooftop Sex
3. Sex On A Ferris Wheel
4. “I’m Only Here For The Summer” Sex
5. Twee, Listening To Django Rheinhardt On A Picnic Blanket Sex (Graveyard Sex acceptable through October)
6. Spike Lee/Rosie Perez in “Do The Right Thing” Ice Cube Sex
7. Loud Sex With The Windows Open
8. Sex With Someone You Plan On Breaking Up With Before The Holidays (You should really just do it now)
9. Sex With Your Booty Call Who Lives Across Town (That commute is gonna start to SUCK)
10. Sex On The Beach (You also can’t order that at a bar anymore)
11. Fleetwood Mac “Lay Me Down In The Tall Grass And Let Me Do My Stuff” Sex
12. Sex In An Outdoor Pool/Hot Tub (Indoor still okay)
13. Sex While Wearing White (Not sure about undies. I think that's acceptable.)

"Buckingham admired Mason's music, Fleetwood says, adding that Buckingham's tune Second-Hand News was structurally influenced by Mason's Only You Know and I Know."

I always assumed it came from this (from Mick's book):

"The McVies' marriage cracked apart for good while we were living in a rented house in Florida, having taken some time off from touring. We decided to use the vacation to rehearse and write for the next album. It was a strange house, a run-down place with overgrown grass and frogs in the green swimming pool in which we half expected to see William Holden floating facedown. There was barbed wire around the property and a rather odd atmosphere. Our big equipment trucks were pulled up in the driveway, and we stayed there with the roadies and their girlfriends. "Go Your Own Way" and a couple of other songs were written there."

It may be a British thing, but when you lay in the tall grass and let someone do their stuff, it means you're getting very lucky... otherwise known as outdoor sex.

He's basically asking Stevie if she'll still sleep with him, despite them not being a couple anymore. A booty call, casual sex, hooking up, a late night summons, a f... I think you get the idea.

Yep, and I bloody love this song and everything it stands for. To just come out and say it like that. The sheer cheek of it, and yet also who wouldn't be flattered to be lusted after so openly? So hot.
