Default Think BIG

David: The problem with that hope is that they weren't playing anything that year that brought the house down ... except perhaps for Stand Back. And who the hell wants to hear that again?

Think BIG man. This was a one-nighter for posterity's sake. If they could do it the year before for The Dance, they sure as hell could muster the guns and requisite moxy for HOF. If not the BN outfit are bigger saps than I thought.

David: I have a strong hunch Peter was asked whether he wanted to join the current band for a performance, & that he (I hope politely) declined.

Well considering he brushed off Lindsey backstage like he wasn't there, I suspect if anything he didn't approve of the banjo & tambourine dog-n-pony show he witnessed as representative of the band he founded. Now I could be wrong -- but something tells me....

BTW after I first posted, and before I saw your rejoinder, I realized I conveniently overlooked the ace in the whole for Albatross, to cover any deficit that may have stemmed from Peter's possible reluctance to engage - Jeremy! But over and beyond that, creative approaches and thinking should have been the hallmark of the night. I could see mixing and matching ANY of the FM personnel in the performances -- whatever it would take to create truly memorable fireworks.

David: But didn't The Chain suck that year? It was lethargic & croaky, wasn't it?

We're talking for the ages, not the year. Think BIG. [Revisit my first response above]

David: What's so uncool about the banjo? How many superficial rock stars can roll the banjo at speed?

Noooooo! Don't even go there. A lot of us still have images of banjos playing in our heads from days long passed and thankfully forgotten, ones hopefully not to be revisited any time soon. [For anyone in the dark, fire up The Derelict from Penguin (1973) -- Dave W, forgive me mate, but it just didn't fit]

From the around the curtains appears none other than Bobs Welch and Weston, to the delight of the old Mac guard. Into Hypnotized (or Sentimental Lady or Miles Away) they go! Ta da! Now we're rampin' things up to far worthier FM heights than a silly tambourine. Finally as Pete and the Bob W's fade into the background, the BN era Five take front and center for a rousing and sentimental rendition of The Chain. Now that as I see it would bring down the house!
Hmmm. The vast majority of that would have moved me to tears -- and not the good kind.

I don't know. I looked forward to Tusk on the tour because I always loved seeing John, Chris and Lindsey on the floor interacting, but in 1997 the song itself was a let down after the DVD with the marching band.

Anyway, they did 1 song from each songwriter and I think that was the right reasoning. So, if they did The Chain, then I'd want it to be The Chain alone, or The Chain, plus 3 more songs.

I wouldn't say I liked The Chain that much during The Dance tour, but compared to the way it sounded for the SYW tour, it was infinitely better in 1997.

Well certainly less sweeping. As are most when it comes to FM.

I don't think my vision is less sweeping than yours and, judging from your posts, I'd say it is a lot more tolerant of FM's different phases as a whole than yours is. You don't have to condemn one line up or, more importantly, fans of that line up, in order to exalt another.

I really don't think you're in a position to know how sweeping my views are, nor is their expanse and spread relevant to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame discussion. Everyone can describe what they like and dislike without pigeonholing those with a different perspective.

Tolerant eh? That's good for a chuckle. The difference is you believe in what you read, I believe what I see - or saw. There's the sweep child. If the early Mac units bore you to tears, and you express it smugly as such (at least that's how I read it per this thread), then why get offended when an older Mac hand suggests you're being myopic. To me its pretty evident.

As for the HOF, you speak of what was, I of what could have been. Again, just another kind of sweep. BTW where's all that glowing tolerance you profess to possess when it comes to my HOF vision? Or should the old guard run away to all the johnny-come-lately types.

First of all, you don't know what I believe and I've had enough of the patronizing tone.

I didn't say the older incarnations of the Mac bored me to tears, I said your fantasy scenario did. And I wouldn't have expressed an opinion on your scenario at all, except that you were refusing to be ignored. You weren't content to simply describe your perfect induction, but apparently think it should be everyone else's perfect induction too. Otherwise, they aren't as broadminded and far-seeing as you are. Your arrogance sparked my frank reply that I would have been bored to tears.

One of the many reasons why there is no right and wrong on this issue is that we were working with different hypotheticals. There is a real DVD coming out and it's going to have 1 of the 3 songs that were really performed. So, we were talking about what songs should have been performed instead, given the people who were there.

You came in and started talking about what you would like to have seen happen, if every one you wanted had been there, Jeremy, Weston, Bob Welch. That's a perfectly legitimate "what if," it's just a different one than I was trying to imagine. Therefore, my fantasy and yours would necessarily be different, because they're starting from completely different premises. That's why I had nothing to add or respond to in your first post. There's no reason to bicker about which impossible dream is superior and which visionary the most enlightened. Both fantasies can co-exist.

"snoot" seems an appropriate name. you're really gonna get into something over what a band should have played over 10 years ago at a Hall of Fame induction ceremony? Chill out.

p.s.- Michele, you are lovely :-)

Peter Green didn't make his decision to perform with Santana instead of Fleetwood Mac because of what he saw of Fleetwood Mac in rehearsal (assuming there was a rehearsal). Green has never exhibited any kinship with or interest in the 1979 incarnation's music (please spare me the anecdote about his guitar work on Brown Eyes), & obviously wasn't going to align himself with it -- however temporarily -- for the HoF induction. I betcha a million & a half that Mick Fleetwood asked Peter to perform with Fleetwood Mac. Peter, whatever his actual reasons, obviously declined. Would he have agreed if Fleetwood Mac had opted to play Before the Beginning or World Keep On Turning? I doubt it. That incarnation and several other incarnations of the band have played several Peter Green songs in concert over the decades -- individual members have even done so in solo concerts -- & Green has never, or almost never, been interested enough to join the fun.

Well, Jeremy posts on the Ledge periodically. Why didn't he join Fleetwood Mac for any music-making that night? He was an inductee & had every right to be there.

The idea of mixing & matching Fleetwood Mac personnel from the enormous span of time is a popular one -- even among the "short-sighted" Rumours lovers. On this forum alone, we've covered it hundreds of times. It never made musical or logistical sense to me, but the spectacle of it would certainly bring a wry smile to my face.

In that case, The Chain shouldn't have been performed at all in your dream scenario.

Well, now who's being short-sighted? I happen to love The Derelict. It's one of the best tracks Fleetwood Mac recorded in those days. There is more pertinent truth in one line of The Derelict than in an entire 1989 solo album by a certain female member.

Press Release:

Well, "never" has arrived. After years of demand - and a small nod to fans with the TIME LIFE video collection (released in the 25th year of the hall) A true audio collection is now becoming available! From www.directcurrentmusic.com: "nearly 200 others in a special 10-volume digital-only collection arriving at iTunes on November 15 and a 51-song 3-CD set available November 1. The annual induction ceremonies are known for their legendary jam sessions and these collections capture many of the best."

I can confirm that commercials for the download service are forthcoming - but the announcement of a physical disc set was truly unconfirmed until now.

Disc 3 of the set contains two FM perfromances from the 1998 inductions, including (track 2) "Say You Love Me" (live acoustic, as was done on THE DANCE tour that previoius fall) [would this mark THE last performance of Christine McVie with the band?] and (track 5) "Landslide" (credited to Lindsey & Stevie) also from 1998.

Longtime FM friends Sheryl Crow and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers also make several appearances on the physical set.

This is a HUGE coup for rock fans - hopefully some of the proceeds will go back into the RRHOFM's ongoing education funds (about to do another AMMS event on Aretha Franklin the weeks of 10/31 - 11/5).

Looking back, the ideal (IMO) would have been SYLM (regular version), Dreams, Oh Well (w/Peter), and GYOW.
