Round 4....
Sticking with Tusk is a good idea.....so let's talk about SISTERS OF THE MOON. 1. Loooove the TUSK doc. performance of this song. The veil over her head, the wooden instrument Stevie is tapping away on, Lindsey's guitar playing, how the audience explodes.... AMAZING! 2. Then there is the Mirage performance...OMG!!! It's soooo good, it's scary! Stevie seems posessed. It's haunting...From the start, when she is creeping along the stage to her ending wailings...When she collapses on Lindsey..What an image of the two of them. Every Fleetwood Mac fan must see this!! 3. I've always heard that this song is about Stevie dealing with her fame. The good and bad side of it. How she looked in the mirror at one point and didn't even recognize the frail, exhausted image looking back at her. The JimLadd interview offered more insight into this. In the tusk doc. performance, she sings..."Does anyone know MY name?" The real her.. 4. I was obsessed with this song for awhile.....it's died down a little...but I still love it! The lyrics are brillant...(just like the rest of Stevie's tusk material) Some of my favorite lines: The black moons in those eyes of her make more sense to me....... It was dark at the top of the stairs..she calllllleeedd to meeeee....... Does anyone know her name???? 5. If only they'd play SOTM again...I know it wouldn't be the same...but maybe they could do it justice somehow.....It's legendary! |

I agree with all your points there!! LOVE. THIS. SONG.
Any and all performances from Tusk/Mirage tours. She sings with such passion. Don't get me wrong, I love the piano demo and the version on the album, but nothing tops a live performance of this song. In the 1979 Jim Ladd interview, she talks more about the meaning of it. And yep, you're right. Something about being with her family, walking across a mirror, going back to look at her image, and she looked terrible. Something too about being backstage before and after FM gigs and seeing all these people and she was wondering if anyone even really knew her name. The people, they love her And still they are the most cruel ^That's what fame can do to ya.

This song just seems to be so much better every time Ihear a live version. I love the version on Tusk but it just seems tocome alive on stage. It's amazing. I think I agree about the fact that it could be about Stevie's fame and how she becomes soeone new in the spot (or moon) light...
Is the Mirage performance on youtube? I've only seen it once and it seems to have vanished It is incredible. Hmmm...I think this thread may beat my one about Thrown Down! Or is there room for both of them?! haha

From the piano-demo to the album version to the live versions, they're ALL amazing!

I love this song. When I was first becoming a really big Fleetwood Mac fan, this was one of the first songs I was drawn to. I love the eerie undertones of it, it's a really powerful song.
'Some call her sister of the moon Some say illusions are her game They like to wrap her in velvet Does anyone know her name?' 'Illusions are her game' - reference to the clothes she wears, in my opinion. I think Stevie's always used her clothes to some extent to hide her vulnerability. She can look mystical and enchanting and all of those other words she's fond of, and create an image. But underneath the clothes, do those people who call her name out every night and listen to her songs really know her? That brings me to the next line. She feels the image she is projecting is all people are seeing. They don't realise that underneath the clothes there's a real person under there. Sad, sad song. But then again, I feel all of Stevie's songs on "Tusk" are heartbreaking.

Can someone point me in the right direction to the "piano demo" of this song? I'm relatively new to this site, and would LOVE to hear any demo of SOTM!

Ah yes...Sisters of the Moon.
I prefer the Mirage tour version to the Tusk tour version. It's just way more on edge, passionate, etc. The Mirage Video version is, of course amazing. I mean, she's freaking speaking in tongues at the end. My favourite live version though is probably Denver, CO 10-15-82. I think I just heard it at a time in my life where the emotions and the lyrics meant a lot. I really enjoy playing along with this version. It's just wrought with emotion. Also, I think the "Some call her sister of the moon..." bridge part is way more awesome when Lindsey sings it. Kind of like a call and answer thing...just keeps it interesting. Recently, this song has taken on a more personal meaning for me. It actually reminds me of my adoptive sister. I grew up as an only child and was taken in by this family in my late teens. My sister and I are especially close, so the line "and she asked, would you be my sister" just sort of reminds me of our relationship....being there for each other, even in the middle of lots of drama and trauma. Not sisters by blood, but sisters of the moon...if that makes any sense.

I agree - I like it when Lindsey sings that bridge part too during some of the live performances. Except, as someone else already pointed out already, I love it when Stevie sings it and sings "... does anyone know MY name?" -- she does that a lot in her songs though. Like "Dreams" for instance. I was just listening to a WH concert where she sings, "There I go again, I say I want my freedom... well who am I to keep you down?" (which is kind of confusing haha but we know how Stevie was/is!) and then she sings "Now here she goes again, she sees the crystal visions" -- she likes to mix up the "you"s, "I"s, "her"s, and "my"s apparently! ![]()

Everything that has been said here is so true, and I am glade to hear some more people saying that they want this song back in some kind of setlist! I have been thinking that this song needs to make a comback in a big way, for a really long time! I understand that Stevie couldnt/wouldnt want to do what she use to do on stage for this song, because it would kill her voice, and she has to be more careful with what she puts her voice and body through. The way Stevie did this song back in the day was wild and tremendous, but now she has the chance to pull it out and bring it back to life in a new and stunning way. The lyrics are beyond beautiful, and I am sure Stevie could come up with some real mystical stage play for this song today. There is no reason why she couldnt do this song the way it was first recorded on the demos slow, soft, haunting, just her with a beautiful piano. I think in it's own way SOTM could be kind of like Beauty And The Beast, the way she has the auidence captured with her talents and skills! I think that Stevie could bring people to thier knees with this song now, like she did in the 70's and 80's, but in a new and diffrent way!

Man, I'd forgotten just HOW brilliant this performance is, and I agree about it really working well with Lindsey singing the bridge. Is there an mp3 of this performance floating around?
