Heart I like bears, how about you?

I know people put up with a lot from me sometimes but I just want to say how much I like bears! Yes, I think bears are great things; pretend ones, real ones, conceptual bears... there should just be a planet of bears where you can go and simply be a bear gruffling and snerfing in the woods. I don't think that means I'm like Timothy Treadwell, although I did live in Alaska for awhile, but I think bears are really cool except for when they are eating folk and then I think they are bad, but not all bears do that sort of thing.

Some people I know really like owls, horses or your basic domestic selection of creatures. I like Pooh, Rupert, Little Bear, and Mr. Bear Squash-You-All-Flat. Maybe the bear is my totem animal. Maybe I'm simply a bit daft, but then "there's nowt wrong wi' bein' daft" I've heard it said. I hope we will always have bears around.

I'm an odd poster but I do know that Bear City rocked!!! I thought it was on Conan O'Brien, but maybe that's because there was the bit with the devil on one shoulder and a bear on the other.

I've always had a major fear of bears my whole life. I have had many dreams that I am walking in the woods and stumble upon a whole family of black bears. And that's all I can always remember. Perhaps because they eat me.

It's pretty rare for black bears to attack people, only at certain times of the year just after or before hibernation if they are really skinny and generally not very well. They are real grumpy when they come out of hibernation (like I am). Even that old sick and desperate grizzly that scarfed up Treadwell and his girlfriend took weeks to finally turn to them even though they camped in the middle of a bear trail in the brush. Statistically people are bigger threats to people than bears. I'm much more afraid of cougars and wolves.

Fat bears are good bears!

Today on the news there was a report of a man in a rural town in New Jersey who was attacked by a bear. He said he was walking to his car with a sandwich and got jumped from behind. He said the bear came out of "nowhere" and knocked him down and all it wanted was his sandwich, so it took it, roughed him up a little and then fled. I'm not fooling-this is a real story.

A friend of mine calls bears stomachs with legs. Their sense of smell is massive too. In Alaska everyone has to have bear proof garbage containers and it's not too uncommon for them to break a window to get into a kitchen. Usually the bears that do wander into populated areas are very young and inexperienced and can be dealt with by trapping, release and then scaring them away with loud noises and dogs.

Those kind of bears are big but not as furry. I have a pink Cubs ball cap but I only follow hockey (Bruins) and soccer-football usually.

I like bears. Have you been to "Bear Country USA" in Rapid City, South Dakota? It's worth a visit:

http://www.bearcountryusa.com/

Stop by there and maybe also see Mount Rushmore and the beautiful countrysides of South Dakota.

I've always wanted to see DeSmet SD. I had pioneer ancestors just down the line from it in Minnesota way back.

My partner gave me some nicknames all relating to bear. He calls me 'El Osito' (the baby bear), or 'Juanito Osito' , or just 'Baby Bear' or 'Mr. Bear'. It's cute, and I call him sometimes 'Papa Bear', 'Senor Oso' (Mr. Bear) or 'Osote' (big bear).
I like bears now! I never paid much attention to them, except for my one stuffed bear on my dresser which I got in Europe a few years ago during the 'Knute' craze.
