Default Healing/Reconvening/Rebelling

I had to laugh...

According to Mr. Buckingham, "Tango In The Night" resolves - both personally and esthetically - many of the problems that plagued Fleetwood Mac after the success of "Rumours."

"'Tusk,' the album that followed 'Rumours,' was a brazen act of rebellion for which I took a lot of flak," he said. "Because of that, the 'Mirage' album, was, in my mind, a reactionary piece of work that tried to reprise 'Rumours' and had very little vision. When the group left the road after the 'Mirage' tour, there were many issues left unresolved. This album is as much about healing our relationships as 'Rumours' was about dissension and pain within the group. The songs look back over a period of time that in retrospect seems almost dreamlike."

It was a strange time, JB. I was snowed, as were thousands of other people. We went to see Lindsey play a brief set for a big Don Henley-organized bash for his pet environmental project in 1986, & Lindsey spoke very believably about how the in-production Fleetwood Mac album (no name yet) was this cathartic healing experience for everybody in the band. The future of Fleetwood Mac looked rosy, indeed, from that vantage point.

The August 1987 split hit with a fury.

Also, from the few interviews we have before the split things looked ok. I've seen more undercurrents between them during other albums than for that one.

And, let's be fair: everybody who works on a project with all his or her dedication, has to believe in it to make it happen. That counts for us too. It is so easy to judge in hindsight.

By the way, nothing against you, as you know, JB, but in the last years the Christine-worshippers keep on picking on Stevie and especially Lindsey, using quotes and behaviourdescriptions of him that are really old. The last six years I have not found any whiny childlike, or extremely arrogant behaviour anymore. Still, that stays the main perception of the man through the eyes of some people on this board. A tad unfair, I think. Especially during a time where he has worked his ass off to show another, more mature and reasonable, mellowed man.

Those are my vague recollections, too. That year before the announcement on MTV, my old acquaintance Laura Gross gave me a tape of her interview with Lindsey & Chris in the spring. I remember listening to it & thinking everything was quite rosy in the band.

Well, there was a comment upstairs (Rumours) about Lindsey just blowing Tango off and saving the stuff for his solo album. Whether he saved the "best" songs for his solo album or not, I can't say, but Lindsey never blew Tango off in any way, shape or form. He worked harder on that album than anybody -- which Mick himself said after Lindsey left the band. Aside from that, I think Lindsey throws himself into any project he's working on at the time. His inability to do something halfway is so consistent that it gets to be a drawback or character flaw. He never gave that band less than 100% when he was in it and the fact that he was incapable of doing so is probably why he wasn't in it longer.

As for his arrogance, he's a psycho, but he is in very good company. I notice that Ken Caillat just said Stevie, Lindsey and Christine could be full of themselves. Lindsey was not singled out.

I just underlined that in the rumoursforum before reading this, S&L are often singled out for arrogance. I cannot agree more with the content of your post, Michele.
