Main reason...it was released 5 years too late.

I rarely reply to much anymore, but the above statement made me so angry, so filled with vitriol, that could not wait to attack my keyboard and dispatch a response.

Out of the Cradle is one of my 10 favorite albums of all time. A collection of songs that hang together in such a cohesive manner, that all the songs seemlessly flow together like pages in a well-written story. No need to change the running order ever on this one.

Commercial failure, sure. However, it was beloved by many, including Rolling Stone who gave it 4 stars and Stereo Review who made it their Critics Choice of the Month.

Certainly it enjoyed more critical success than the first two albums. Why it failed commercially had little to do with people passing on its content and more to do with them just not knowing the darn thing was out there.

I wonder if Lindsey thought that way when he didn't include it in the UTS setlist. Did he think we wouldn't miss the songs because they didn't sell? If so, I'd like to give him a good talking to.

Gift Of Screws is an excellent collection of songs. Go Insane, Law & Order, and Under the Skin- in that order (Lindsey monkeyed with some of the UTS songs unnecessarily)
I don't think Ive ever heard anyone say that before....

Oh, absolutely. Completely agree.

I'm glad you like it. I'm serious- I really do. There's just too many cringe-worthy tracks on it- whether it be because of the lyrical content, the music, the production, Lindsey vocal performance, or all four. "This Is The Time" pulls off this rare superfecta feat.

Which makes absolutely no sense, given the considerable marketing dollars, promotional appearances/radio station tours, and extensive concert touring (he opened for Tina Turner, for christsake).

I ask this with all sincerity and wild-eyed curiosity- what should Lindsey/WBR have done to get the public's attention that would have changed the fortunes of this project? Is it not possible that his target audience at the time just saw it as what it was- an already-dated, wholly self-derivative solo album from an ex-member of a (basically) dead & irrelevant band. High profile promotional appearances like the Leno/"Don't Look Down" trainwreck did more to confound than intrigue.

I think he's still smarting from the massive failure that it was. He put in a lot of man-hours and went to extraordinary lengths to promote the thing- not to mention the 5+ years in recording it. I also think he looks back on it the same way he does L&O and GI- its in the past, he was a different person then, not really ashamed of his efforts but not willing to put it out in the forefront, either.

There's nothing he could have done. The public wasn't interested in output from him at that point. But the volume of sales is no way to compare the quality of the album to that of his other offerings. While you may not like the album, I don't think its sales are proof that most other people disliked it or liked the first two more. The first two just had more help from the FM afterglow. If he'd released OOTC right around The Dance's popularity, I bet the very same album would have sold more.

Mine:

Down On Rodeo - Specifically the demo version with lyrics. I've praised this version to the moon and back so I won't any further.
Trouble - Always been a favorite but Lindsey gave it new life with his alternate live takes starting with the Under the Skin tour.
Cast Away Dreams - This one became an instant favorite the moment I heard it.
Underground - Same here. It might be my favorite Lindsey solo track ever, it's hard to say.
Soul Drifter - Long story behind this one that I won't go into.
Go Insane - I think the album version doesn't get the credit it deserves. I love listening to it with headphones on.
Dancing 'Cross The U.S.A. - Underrated track.
Under The Skin - Memories.
Bel Air Rain
Treason

Agreed. Thanks for saying so by the way, I was beginning to feel guilty for not liking it.

Geez, picking a favorite LB song is like picking a favorite child for me. So I shall take the high road and pick a few from each solo album.

L&O
Trouble
I'll Tell You Now
Satisfied Mind

GI
Go Insane (although I like the slow version better than this one)
Slow Dancing
Play In The Rain- both parts (I have to be in a certain mood to listen to it though)
Bang the Drum

OOTC
I could really say "the entire album" here, but I'll try to limit it.
Countdown
Soul Drifter
This is the Time
Street of Dreams
Surrender the Rain

UTS
Not Too Late
Under the Skin
Shut Us Down

GOS
Great Day
Did You Miss Me
Bel Air Rain
