Default Irish Times on LB's Soundstage 4 Stars

April 10, 2009 http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/...244309810.html

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM & STEVIE NICKS
Live Metrodome Video ★★★★

Rolling Stone magazine was absolutely correct when it labelled Lindsey Buckingham one of rock music’s most undervalued visionaries. When he joined the then moribund Fleetwood Mac in 1975, he helped them create their career-high Rumors album. Apart from his work with the Mac, he’s also released several very good-quality solo albums. Here we catch him in concert running through some of his best band and solo moments – Trouble and Big Love included. The shows gets more than a little lift when his ex-partner (both on-stage and off), Stevie Nicks, joins him for Never Going Back Again and a thumping Go Your Own Way . You may not think a Lindsey Buckingham music DVD has that much to offer. Think again. This is great. BRIAN BOYD

I love his "Soundstage". In fact, I may watch it again sometime soon because I die when I hear Down On Rodeo and Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind.

On a side note, I was a little miffed that Right Place to Fade (aka Twist of Fate) was never sung live on this, any of his shows, or even as a solo contribution for the current FM tour. I really love that song and think it should be shown off.

Before the tour started, I was sure Right Place to Fade would be in the Mac setlist. I mean after all, its a FM song in all but name anyway. I think that or Love Runs Deeper would have been awesome. Even though the full band version of Go Insane was great, I would have put either of those in its place. Even a full band Big Love.

Maybe he confused Say Goodbye with Go Your Own Way.

Now I best be on my way before the night turns blue. You know darn well that shackin' up is not all I want to do.

Amazon recently emailed me about another re-issue of this DVD so they're probably reviewing that. That must be the third time it's been released under various names and covers

EDIT:

Yup, just checked and there are three different version listed on AmazonUK:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lindsey-Buck...9751096&sr=8-8 (the newest one)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lindsey-Buck...751096&sr=8-11

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Soundstage-P...751096&sr=8-14

The last one is an import, but the first two that they list are different to the Region2 version that I have so there is a third European version.

None of those 3 look like the version I have Is it just me, or does anybody think that they meant to review Stevie's soundstage and ended up getting Lindsey's one featuring Stevie instead? I mean, Lindsey's soundstage seems like such a random thing to review these days.

Probably so. And since we're in the Lindsey forum I can frankly say that his Soundstage is far superior to hers.IMO of course. I bought Stevie's on the day of release to show the love and because I'm enjoying her lately but was really underwhelmed. However, I kind of enjoy her version of Crash Into Me more than the original. And Landslide is always beautiful.

But Lindsey's just has gem after gem on it. I think each performance is perfect and just touches my heart, especially the two songs I mentioned above in my first post and Say Goodbye. Now that is a gorgeous tune.

My biggest memory of that night was not getting a chance to eat before hand, and then being trapped in the studio for 3 and a half hours! I had some suckers in my purse that my friend and I were eating in between takes. Good times. Does he still have the record for the longest taping? I thought I remembered reading that somewhere.

My favorite performance is I am waiting. I like the Soundstage version much better than the one that ended up on UTS.

Oh, that's pretty awesome you were there that night. He must have done 3 or 4 takes of each song, sheesh...but the finishing product was worth it. Did Stevie get a huge ovation when she came out? I would think so but perhaps it was even muted a little on the DVD.

I know someone who also went there and sat in an area not far from Lindsey's wife. She said he looked up at that section quite a bit.

he did everything twice. Except for big love, that went good in one time and he chose to leave that one there, to save the fingers.

Stevie was warmly received, but I think most of us were conscious that this was Lindsey's night, so it wasn't overboard. Stevie was also very deferential to him while she was on stage. However the dead silence of the audience in between takes when the two of them were on stage together (as if everyone was trying to listen to their conversation) was a little weird.

He did look up at Kristen quite often from what I remember. I can't believe it was five and a half years ago already!

And they were aware of it because their conversation was very polite and unnatural, as if they weren't quite familiar.
