I just ratch it up a notch because of the negativity that is directed at her by some here. I tend to defend the underdog. On this board she is the underdog. At leas tthat is my impression.

If I meant it any other way I would have said so. I think Lindsey is a more creative and innovative artist then Stevie. However Stevie is a better all around performer and rock star IMO.

The current "danceable" artists she mentions liking are the quality artists in that genre.
Yup. And don't forget her involvement in the Dreams remix as well as the Stand Back one. Also i rememebr the dance clubs use to play the original SB way back in 83, she must have got a kick out of that.

There was a rumour that the Pet Shop Boys were going to produce something for her or they were trying to work with her. That woulda been very cool.

In print, The Pet Shop Boys have expressed great interest
in working with Stevie. I never heard anything more about it.

But, even though I doubt she'd bite, it sounds like a hoot of an idea.

If they did just one song, I would suggest they do a cover of Justified and Ancient. The song that KLF wrote for Tammy Wynette.

Could it get any better?

"All bound for Mu-Mu land."

Hell, Stevie is all about the Mu-Mus.

She is Justified. And Ancient.

Perfect!

See, they could do a video like this, but all the dancers
could be CGI repeats of Bennoyance and Ri-Ri. They could alternate the "all bound for Mu Mu land" line. Justin Timberlake could do the rap section. They do it in a Blade Runner meets Gypsy urban forest set. I already have the thing designed. Lots of flying chiffon and tropical plants against scaffolding, a downtown cityscape out of which erupts Stevie's magical forest and ~mystical~ world.
She would need to be wearing an enormous crown on the
prow of a majestic ship just like Garbo. Emerging from the
urban jungle to take back the modern architecture and cultural erosion and transform it back to its earthy and
mystical beginnings.

Here is the video for those who don't know the song.

:-)

I was so thinking of the Tammy Wynett song when I mentioned the Boys. Thanks for posting the link.

Unfortunatly I think Stevie's career would have to take a huge nosedive in order for her to do something so outrageous. She wa lucky to be able to coincide her comeback with the FM reunion in 97. If not for FM how would she have or if she would have made a comeback? Hmmmm???

I think the nosedive has already happened.

Unfortunatly it has been the longest period between solo records of her career. And the last one wa not that successful. Not a true hit on it.

She is ripe for a "comeback."

AGAIN.

We are not exactly talking about an artist who is
cranking out fresh material and inspired writing.

And Tammy Wynett was frankly a bigger phenomenon in her genre than Stevie could ever hope to be.

And I love that she had enough of a sense of humor
about herself to do that song.

Tammy had class.

Stevie could well learn a lesson from her.

After all, according to Stevie they were at Betty Ford together.

And who knows, maybe one day we will hear a story about
Lindsey riding a tractor to the tavern after Stevie took away the keys to his pickup.

One can hope and dream.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
take that back

*hyperventilating*

SYW is my fave Mac record
i dont like that they dont think anything is worth playing this time round just coz of the events of the last tour
i think that swayed Stevies/all of their dislike towards the album

The lyrics would have to be changed...but that could be a cute idea. Although I would hate to see the song messed with at all. Rusty's steel guitar in the song makes it for me...

As s a very long time fan of the First Lady of Country Music - I have to disagree.

Tammy never made that big "come back" you talk about. She did get a little bit of attention from Hollywood when she performed at the Roxy. It was a publicity stunt that caused her to record with the KLF, (thanks Richey) and her voice never recovered after her health started deteriorating. The end of her life was sad and undeserved, her death untimely and more than likely could have been prevented....

However, Stevie, the Queen of Rock and Roll took her silver spoon and dug her way out of the potential grave. She may not have some of the chops she once had in her younger days, but at least her addictions aren't killing her any more. I think she sounds and looks amazing on this current FM tour. It looks like she will do the one thing her rehab partner at Betty Ford couldn't do and that is not let her addictions destroy her.

If and when the performing ship sails for Stevie, I think her final bow will be very classy ... not the worst performance ever of her signature song on national television to go home and die on a couch because she had been overmedicated by a control freak...

I think Stevie has risen above.

Btw, Lindsey wouldn't even know what a pickup truck is... The story might be more accurate if it included a Mercedes and cocaine...

I'm not a fan of Rihanna but I do like Timberlake and Beyonce a lot, but I do think it's a stretch calling them songwriters. If you look at their albums every song has at least five songwriting credits to it. Hell, I think I could be a songwriter too if I could collaborate with professional songwriters and top producers for every track. If Beyonce won a songwriting award I bet she had to share it with quite a few others.

Xtina has written some really good songs, as has Pink. I'm not a huge John Mayer fan but I think he's extremely talented. I can see them inspiring future artists.
But do you think Madonna inspired people to want to be songwriters or to be pop stars? I'm not putting pop stars down, the world would be a duller place without them, but I seriously doubt Madonna inspired many want to write songs the way Dylan, for example, has. I also think a lot of pop stars attempt to co-write their songs these days (especially with declining sales) because they get a far bigger royalty cheque when their name is on the list of songwriters (Elvis did this as far back as the 50s). Remember Whitney bitching how Dolly made all the money on I Will Always Love You?

That said, I think maybe the lack of inspiration for Stevie these days is not the music she's listening to but the lack of drama in her life. I've no doubt Lindsey listens to Radiohead and gets grand ideas, but I've never thought Stevie was as influenced by the music she hears (otherwise I think we'd see more variation in her style) so much as what's she's going through in her personal life.

Oh I never implied that Tammy made a big comeback.

Aside from her sad demise, however, she dominated country music and had more influence in her genre than Stevie did.

I base this not on my personal opinion but the testimony
of essentially every female country singer to come after her. I mean come on. 17 number one songs?

Dude. That Queen of Rock and Roll tag was a one time
tag from Rolling Stone that was dubbed on a cover in the summer of 1981. Almost 28 years ago. It was true then.
It was momentary.

Oh don't get me wrong. I am glad she is alive.

She beat the addictions, except the one to pot, and lived.

She just isn't creative anymore.

True. And god knows he couldn't drive a tractor to a tavern. He'd need to call an assistant to help.

I'm with you on that! You'd think she (they) would get sick and of talking about the past and milking it to death. Anyone who cares about/follows them have heard those stories for twenty years!! It's become embarassing. Move on people!!!

Didn't know any of this about Tammy, sounds interesting but sad.
I do not know much about her or her music but was always very intrigued by that raspy twang on the KLF song.

She was a wonderful woman and I miss her. I was priviledged to visit her house several times and I've gotten to know one of her daughters. Her death devastated me. She went too soon.

I remember her steel guitar player's story about recording for "Justified and Ancient". And Tammy's vocals on that were just great. Her granddaughters loved to dance around the house to it!

You are so right. Like John, I never wanted this line up to do that song before, but at this stage of the game, it would have a certain poignancy.

No, but that's why I don't think you can compare the two. I had 2 points really - 1) that just because something isn't our taste doesn't mean it sucks/is meaningless, and 2) you can't compare pop stars to singer-songwriters, it's 2 different things.

And as I mentioned, ARE there any truly influential singer-songwriters out there now? LIke, from our generation? Honestly, the only one who comes to mind for me is Patty Griffin & a few country artists like Lucinda Williams. Even they might be considered "old school" to some.
