Philly PA 3-21-77

I've been slowly and tediously taking the hundreds of cassettes of shows I collected (long before the internet and digital technology exisited) and burning them on CDRs -- at least the ones with the sound quality worthy of it. In the process I've been rediscovering some great shows. One in particular, a very early Rumours concert in Philly, seems very notable for several reasons.

It comes at a very pivitol time for the band...they still are playing pre-Lindsey/Stevie Fleetwood Mac songs. And soon those will be replaced forever-more with other Rumours tracks. Christine almost apologizes to the crowd for playing the new Rumours songs. She says "you're the first audience to hear these." Is that true? Was this the first Rumours concert?

In fact, it is very apparent that the band has yet to settle into those "new" songs, since they don't sound as confident and fleshed out yet.

With "You Make Lovin' Fun," in the end they sing "I'm beginning to wonder why" and "I've a feeling it's time to try" instead of "That's all I want to do." Another observation: During "Landslide," some idiotic audience member repeated yells out "Take it off!" There is some nervous laughter in the audience. I'm sure Stevie was not too happy about a "fan" disrupting her perfomance with a request more appropriate for a strip club.

What song is this??? Is it a pre-Stevie/Lindsey song or a cover or is it not the song title?

This is so ironic that you post this today because, like yourself, i've got an incredible lot of shows on tape that i DREAD having to put them on cd. i'm doing it as a "need and want" basis for myself as i've got so many other things to do besides burn cds all day long....plus, i'm such a fanatic and perfectionist that when i do convert them over i have to make sure i can tweak it out so that it sounds as good as it's ever going to get. when i started collecting bootlegs i would try to re-eq them as best as i could just so i could listen to them...also, a lot of times the speed/pitch was off so i'd have to take different tape players with slower tape speed mechanisms and dub them back and forth till i got the "correct" speed.

anyway....i've just undertaken the project of burning the philadelphia 1977 show onto cd right now as we speak!!! it's my favorite all time FM bootleg concert. They were still kind of "old-school" in the beginning of the tour as they still played a few of the pre-Lindsey/Stevie songs. Plus, Stevie's voice was still like it was in 1976 albeit maybe a little richer (see Mick's book about his comments regarding how Stevie's voice had gone into a lower register after she "shredded" it the year before)....anyway, she sounds fantastic as does the rest of the band. i LOVE the setlist. And, how about that Gold Dust Woman with the opera type ending? I've never heard anything like it come out of Stevie's voice ever. I've got the Scotland tape from a few weeks after the Philly tape and she did a more abbreviated version of that opera-like chanting. i love Lindsey's guitar on "the chain"...i've never heard it played that way. however, it seems like he was having trouble singing that night. it seemed like he was more like barking the higher notes out.

the version i have is audience recorded. if there is a soundboard out there i'll die...i tried eq-ing this the best i could. i don't have any special editing software that "fixes" bootlegs with all their hisses and overall uneven sound qualities...i'm open for suggestions from anyone.

there's another show out there from the beginning of the Rumours tour that was recorded at Nassau Colliseum on Long Island. i'd like to get my hands on that one.

Wldhrt315...."tell me all the things you do" was on the Kiln House album...it's a cute little song. not sure who did it originally as it's the only Fm album i don't have.

Tell Me All The Things You Do is a Danny Kirwan song from the Kiln House album. The Rumours era band does a great version of it. The lyric is very scant: "Tell me all the things you do. I'll tell you all the things I do." That is the entire lyric! But Lindsey and Stevie sing it together and sound wonderful as ever.

that's weird cause on my tape the lyrics are exactly like the record's...??? i do have some shows from 1976 when they premiered that song and they did sing the refrain as you stated above. you can hear this on the "rosebud" film.

Joe, it is eerily ironic that your in the same place as myself with regard to transferring cassettes to CDR...it can be a long, frustrating experience. Perhaps I was wrong about You Make Lovin' Fun (the refrain at the end.) I've been listening to so many shows I may have gotten confused. I'll have to refer back to the tape to confirm. I am very sure, however, that we have the same show.

I'm not set up yet with a trade page. Alas, that is a long way off. Still, I'd love to get some new shows...especially any from the middle period era -- Kiln House to Mystery to Me. Anyone interested in a trade for this show?

ohhhh i know....i just went through that today...i'm going to spare the details....anyway, that's why i'm only transferring shows as a needed (for myself) basis. it's very time consuming and frustrating as you said.

They do the same thing on the Rosebud show, as I'm sure you're aware...I just wanted to point out that I like this alternative ending, especially with Stevie singing the higher harmony on it.

yeah, i like it too...i like it better than the finished version...as a matter of fact that Rosebud version is my all time favorite version of that song...i think Stevie's harmonies during the chorus are very beautiful.
