This is the best explanation I've read - and fairly easy to follow, especially if you're a fan of UT:

Let me try to see if I can make any sense of this from all the articles I've read.

So can Texas go to the NC game without playing in the Big XII Championship game? Yes! Here is why... If OU happens to lose to OSU, then that means TxTech would be in the Big XII Championship game and not Texas. Tech holds the face to face meeting over Texas, meaning they fly out to Kansas City to play Mizzou. Tech is too far behind with this loss to OU, that it wouldn't matter who wins that game because Texas would still be ahead of them and go to the NC game. If OU wins and goes to Kansas City to play Mizzou, then OU would have to lose and Texas sitting at #3 would jump into the #2 spot with an OU loss, or even #1 with an OU and a Alabama loss in their championship games. Florida would probably be #1 with a win over Alabama though. Regardless we take a spot in the NC game.

Can OU and Texas play for the NC game? Yes. A LOT of things have to happen for this to happen. First OU would have to win out and so would Texas. Next week Auburn would have to beat Alabama and Florida State would have to beat Florida. Then in the SEC championship game Florida would have to beat Alabama. This would mean that Alabama and Florida would have 2 losses in the season and wouldn't have an argument about not being in the NC game. The final BCS standings would probably be #1 OU - #2 Texas - #3 USC. Since the BCS NC game is solely based on the ranking of where the teams are in the final week, that would mean Texas and OU would have to play one another. This would probably create A LOT of controversy between conferences and probably that would be the end of the BCS NC game. At that point I think A LOT of universities might push for a play-off system.

Can Texas be left out in the cold? Yes. If OU wins out (which seems like the biggest possibility), and Florida Beats Alabama then it would be Florida and OU in the NC game. Texas would probably get the Fiesta Bowl bid against any of the following... USC (if Oregon State wins out), Utah, Ohio State (If Oregon State loses then USC would go to the Rose Bowl, which means Ohio State gets into a BCS bowl), or we might even go to the Sugar Bowl and play Alabama.

I know I had a headache after reading about 10 articles about all these scenarios. Oh wait... None of this matters if Texas doesn't beat Texas A&M. If Texas beats A&M then you should probably start cheering for OSU and if they don't beat OU, then cheer on Mizzou! That's the easiest way we get into the NC game.
