Well, its been over 3 days, and still no one is showing this date change. I guess that's a good sign, right?

I know Stevie isn't U2, but this Wall Street Journal article about how album releases are being delayed because of the slumping music business may help us understand what's happening with Soundstage.

HEADLINE: Bands Delay Albums, Leave Labels in Lurch

BYLINE: By Ethan Smith

BODY:

As recently as last month, Universal Music Group's Interscope Geffen A&M Records planned to release five major albums by superstar acts during the critical holiday shopping season.

Improbably, "Chinese Democracy" -- the magnum opus that Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose has been fussing over since 1991 -- is now the only one of the five that will definitely make it to store shelves before 2009.

That leaves Interscope grappling with a problem as old as the music industry itself: how to control when pop musicians finish their albums. Three of the big titles have been bumped to 2009; a fourth remains in creative limbo.

The delays are occurring against the backdrop of an accelerating decline in sales for all record labels. Until very recently, the broad economic downturn didn't appear to be having much impact on music sales. But in the past couple of weeks, sales have fallen off a cliff. Album sales last week were down 29% from a year earlier, a significantly steeper decline than the 13% drop for the year to date.

Executives throughout the industry say they were caught off guard. "We've been pretty insulated up to this point," says Tom Corson, general manager at Sony BMG's RCA Music Group. Sony BMG is a joint venture of Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann AG.

At Interscope, the situation is amplified by the big releases that have dropped from the label's November-December slate, including Eminem's "Relapse," a new album from the Black Eyed Peas, and rap star 50 Cent's "Before I Self Destruct."

Currently uncertain is the release date of another album with a white-whale status nearly as mythical as that of "Chinese Democracy": "Detox," the first album in nine years from Dr. Dre. The hip-hop super-producer may yet deliver the album in time for a late-December release, according to people familiar with the matter, but it's not currently on the schedule.

U2's followup to 2004's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" was pushed to 2009 earlier in the fall, after the band, its manager and Interscope and Universal executives decided the material the group had recorded wasn't strong enough. Universal Music is owned by France's Vivendi SA.

"We want 2009 to be our year," U2 frontman Bono wrote in early September on U2.com.

Interscope Chairman Jimmy Iovine said in a written response to questions that he is more concerned about coaxing high-quality music from his artists than meeting release schedules. "Interscope Geffen A&M has never been a label to rush the creative process of its artists," Mr. Iovine added.

Scratching a potential blockbuster from the Christmas shopping season, when the music industry makes up to 40% of its sales, is always painful for a major label. But it could hurt even more now than in the past. That's because today, in a world of receding music sales, only the biggest hits can still move millions of units, and only a tiny group of superstars deliver such titles.

Joe Nardone Jr., who owns Pennsylvania's eight-store Gallery of Sound chain, cites strong sellers this year from Kid Rock, Metallica and Lil Wayne, whose "Tha Carter III" (released by one of Interscope's sister labels at Universal Music) was the first album to sell more than a million units in a single week since 2005. Mr. Nardone says run-of-the-mill releases seem to be suffering the biggest sales declines, and "the gap in between is just tremendous."

Even Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" won't help retailers like Mr. Nardone, since Universal is selling the CD only at Best Buy Co. stores. Such sales arrangements have become more common in recent years, and often generate massive sales thanks to the intensive marketing the exclusive titles typically receive. AC/DC's "Black Ice" has sold 1.3 million copies in four weeks at Wal-Mart Stores Inc., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Best Buy, the No. 3 music retailer in the U.S., behind Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store and Wal-Mart, is pushing "Chinese Democracy" aggressively, including by staging large-scale "listening parties" in dozens of cities and erecting within in its 923 domestic locations "stores-within-stores" dedicated to the hard-rock band.

Through the second week of November last year, Interscope Geffen A&M had a bigger market share of new albums -- 6.28% -- than any other individual label in the U.S. This year, it has lost that lead to Warner Music Group Corp.'s Atlantic Records, which has an 8.11% share, compared with Interscope's 6.03%. A strong lineup of major new releases could have helped Interscope regain the top spot.

Universal Music Group still retains the biggest market share of any music company, with almost 35% of new music. The changes in Interscope's lineup may not hurt Universal's overall market share much thanks to several major releases from the group's other labels, including albums by Kanye West, the Killers and Taylor Swift.

But some of the delays may diminish the impact of already launched promotional tie-ins, reducing total sales. "The Way I Am," a coffee-table sized Eminem autobiography, was published last month.

To help set up the Dr. Dre release, Interscope and Dr. Dre formed partnerships with at least two companies to sell unusual products bearing his endorsement. Monster Cable Products Inc. is selling custom-made $350 headphones called Beats by Dr. Dre. And beverage maker Drinks Americas Holdings Ltd. has begun marketing Aftermath Cognac, named for the producer's record label. Aftermath "sparkling vodka" is also in the works, according to Drinks Americas.

I thought Stevie said the postponement was about the election. You know, not to distract from the more important things in life. But in any regards, I think that Stevie's fans will be the most likely people to buy this release of hers, no matter what the state the economy is in.

There is still no indication on any website, including Warner's, about another delay. So thankfully, things remain the same.

Michelej, another good post. Makes perfect sense. If we are all watching our money this can't help but hurt sales.

I hope I'm wrong about the updated release date, but......

At least the Chris Isaak interview with Stevie is still scheduled for 1/13/09 on the Bio Channel. Of course that date could change too.

It looks like now she'll have to re-film her Chris Isaak appearance (because of the release date change) or they'll just scrap the whole thing.

I heard that when Stevie is swinging her scarf at the end of HSML, it feels just like it's coming right at you.

Stevie in 3-D! Zoinks! I will buy 17 copies, because who needs to pay the rent when you can have multiple copies of each of the 45 different versions of the same concert on DVD? I ask you.

Haha, that's Cthulhu - a giant monster that originated in some stories by H.P. Lovecraft. He's on my couch there, modeling, because he was part of a giveaway Christmas promotion we were running on our website - he and some Monty Python toys from the nice folks at Toy Vault.

I need to change it now that the giveaway has changed tonight, though.

[QUOTE=iamnotafraid;779128]Some new information about the DVD/CD release.

Stevie has some upcoming TV appearances and the
dates of two of them just happen to be on the new release
date of the DVD/CD.

I don't know if there's anything "new" on the TV appearances,
especially PBS' Soundstage. But the Chris Isaak show is listed
as an interview.......???

Here's the dates.

1. SOUNDSTAGE - PBS 11/27/08
2. SOUNDSTAGE - PBS 01/13/09
3. Chris Isaak Show (interview) BIO 01/13/09[/QUOTE
________________________________________________

Maybe I was Clairvoyant on the Chis Isaak Show?
The date on the SoundStage show was accurate, but as
you can see the Chris Isaak show date has changed.
RockALittle updated the news on another thread.

(check the original post date on this thread)
All my post are not for fun!
